Baby Play Block

A colorful baby block with pockets, embellishments and small stuffed toy!
Skill Level: 
Easy – Basic stitches and simple shaping. Patience required for assembly.
You should at least know how to: single crochet, double crochet, half crochet, slip stitch, use back/front loops only, decrease and more.
Materials: 
Small amounts of double knitting/light worsted yarn, in colors of choice 
Approx 50 gr of main color in double knitting/light worsted yarn for block 
Fiberfill/Toy Stuffing 
Size 3.50 mm Hook 
Yarn Needle 
Stitch Marker 
Optional – buttons for eyes, beads for flower centers and ribbon.
Due to the nature of this pattern – the yarn and hook used is only a suggestion and any substitute may be used. Size of finished product will vary depending on yarn and size of hook used.
Size: Block Measures – 12 cm in width and 12 cm in length worked in double knitting/light worsted yarn
I use US Crochet stitch terminology

INSTRUCTIONS:
Block:
CH 21 with main color yarn
Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd Ch from hook, work 1 SC into each CH until end (20 SC), turn CH1
Row 2-24: Work 1 SC into each ST until end (20 SC), turn CH1
Row 25: For this row only work in back loops – Work 1 SC into each ST until end (20 SC), turn CH1
Row 26-48: Work 1SC into each ST until end (20 SC), turn CH1
Row 49: For this row only work in back loops – Work 1 SC into each ST until end (20 SC), turn CH1
Row 50-72: Work 1SC into each ST until end (20 SC), turn CH1
Row 73: For this row only work in back loops – Work 1 SC into each ST until end (20 SC), turn CH1
Row 74-96: Work 1SC into each ST until end (20 SC), turn CH1
Each block section consists of 24 rows.
Sew the two outside edges together with SL ST to form block. FO and weave in ends.
Crochet two single blocks:

CH 21 with main color

LoveCrochet
Row 1: Work 1S C into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each CH until end(20 SC), turn CH1
Row 2-24: Work 1 SC into each ST until end(20 SC), turn CH1.

FO and weave in ends.

How to assemble block:
Match a single piece to one of the open sides of the block,Matching stitches sew pieces together with SL ST.
When sewing the second piece, leave a small space and stuff with fiberfill/stuffing, before closing. FO and weave in ends.
 
Pink Pocket:
Join yarn with a SC at the beginning of a back loop row continue working 1 SC in each loop (20 SC), turn CH1

 

Row 2-16: Work 1 SC into each ST until end (20 SC), turn CH1
SL ST sides onto block.
Letter C:
With yarn CH 30
Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each CH to end, turn CH1
Row 2: Work 1 SC into first SC, *work 2 SC into next SC, work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * to end, turn CH1
Row 3: Work 1SC into each SC until end, turn CH1
Row 4: *Work 2SC into next SC, work 1SC into next SC. Repeat from * 4 times more. Work 1SC into each SC until last 10SC. *Work 1SC into next SC, work 2SC into next SC. Repeat from * 4 times more. Turn CH1
Row 5: Work 1SC into each SC until end. DO NOT TURN, continue working on the inside of the C. Work 2SC in same ST, then work 1SC into each ST of row 1, ending with 2SC into first SC of row 5.
SL ST all around outer edge. FO and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew Letter C to one of the sides.
Blue Pocket:
With yarn CH 4
Row 1: Work 5 DC into 4th CH from hook, turn
Row 2: CH3 (counts as DC), work 1 DC in same ST, work 2 DC in each ST (12 DC), turn
Row 3: CH3 (counts as DC), work 1 DC in same ST, work 1DC in next ST. *Work 2 DC in next ST, work 1DC in next ST. Repeat from * until end. (18 DC)
Row 4: CH3 (counts as DC), work 1DC in same ST, work 1DC in next two STS. *Work 2 DC in next ST, work 1DC in next two  STS. Repeat from * until end. (24 DC)
DO NOT TURN, work 17 SC along straight edge.
Row 5: CH1, work 1 SC into next 24 DC – work
in back loops only, turn CH1
Row 6-12: CH1, work 1 SC into next 24 DC – work
in back loops only, turn CH1
SL ST across top row. FO and weave in ends.
Pin pocket into position onto one the sides. SL ST onto block.
 
Stuffed Kitty:
With yarn CH 16  (make two)
Row 1: Work 1SC in 2nd CH from hook. Work 1SC into each CH until end (15 SC), turn CH1
Row 2-20: Work 1SC into each CH until end (15SC), turn CH1
SL ST two pieces together. Leave an opening to stuff. Do not over-stuff.
Sew opening close. FO and leave a long tail.
With long tail sew long stitches to form ears.
Pull thread to shape ear. Tip: thread tail thru inside of body Sew long stitch around neck, pull thread to form neck.

 

FO and weave in end. Stuffed Kitty fits inside of blue pocket!
Sew buttons on for eyes (or use safety eyes).
Embroider a few stitches for a nose. Tie a ribbon around Kitty’s neck.
Heart:
With yarn CH3
Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next CH, turn CH1
Row 2: Work 2 SC into each SC (4 SC), turn CH1
Row 3: Work 1 SC into each SC (4 SC), turn CH1
Row 4: Work 2 SC into first SC, work 1 SC into each SC until last SC, work 2 SC into last SC, turn CH1
Row 5: Work 1SC into each SC, turn CH1
Repeat Row 4 and 5 until there are 20 SC.
Row 20-21: Work 1 SC into each SC, turn CH1
Shaping Top:
*Next row: Work 1 SC into next 10 SC, turn CH1
Next row: SC2tog, 1 SC into each SC to end, turn CH1
Next row: SC2tog 1 SC into each SC until last 2 STS, SC2tog, turn CH1. Rep last row twice more. 3 STS  left. FO
Rejoin yarn on other side and repeat from * to shape and complete other side of top to match first side.
SL ST all around outer edge. FO and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew heart to one of the sides.

Flowers: (I made  three)

With yarn CH 6, SL ST to form ring.
CH3, work 3 DC into ring, SL ST into ring, *CH3, work 3 DC into ring, SL ST into ring. Rep from * 3 times more.
Sew flowers to top of block, optional add beads
for center of flowers
