PART ONE:
Two Big Squares and Two Small Squares
SKILL LEVEL:
Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
SIZE:
Big Square Approx – 26 cm x 26 cm
Small Square Approx – 12 cm x 12 cm
MATERIALS:
Yarns:
Small amounts of double knitting/light worsted yarn in various colors or
various colors in any yarn available
Approx 25 grams of a Main Color – I used Cream
IMPORTANT NOTE – USE THE SAME TYPE OF YARN THROUGH OUT THE PROJECT!
Don’t stress – the size will just differ if different types are used 🙂
Hooks & Notions:
Size 3.50 Hook / or 4.00 Hook ( I used a 3.50 Hook)
Yarn Needle
GAUGE:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect as long as all the blocks are approx. the same size
I use US Crochet stitch terminology
INSTRUCTIONS:
Big Square: Make 2
CH 40
Row 1: Work 1 DC into 4th chain from hook, work 1 DC into every chain until end, turn (38 DC)
Row 2: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into every ST until end, change color, turn (38 DC)
Row 3: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end, change color, turn (38 SC)
Row 3: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end, change color, turn (38 SC)
Row 4: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into every ST until end, turn (38 DC)
Row 5: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into every ST until end, change color, turn (38 DC)
Repeat from row 3 until there are 9 strips of DC rows and 8 rows of SC
FO after last row and weave in all ends.
Border: With main color yarn (cream)
Join yarn with a SC into the first DC
Rnd 1: Work 1 SC into every DC (38 DC), work 1 SC again into last ST, continue down the side of the rows
– work 2 SC into each DC row, skip the SC rows,
– work 2 SC into first ST of bottom row, work 1 SC into each ST until end, continue up the side of the rows
– work 2 SC into each DC row, skip the SC rows, work 1 SC into the same ST as the first SC
There will now be 38 STS on each Side of the Square.
Rnd 2: SL ST into first SC, CH1, work 1 SC into same ST, work 1 SC into next 36 STS, *Corner – work 2 SC into next ST, CH2, work 2 SC into next ST*, work 1 SC into next 36 STS , repeat Corner, work 1 SC into next 36 STS, repeat Corner, work 1 SC into next 36 STS, work 2 SC into next ST, CH2, work 1 SC into same ST as first SC.
Rnd 3: SL ST into first SC, CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end, working 2 SC, 2 CH, 2 SC into each of the Corner 2 CH
SL ST into first SC, FO and weave in ends.
Small Square: Make 2
With first color yarn – CH 5 and join with a SL ST into first CH to form a ring
Rnd 1: CH3, make a 3 DC cluster, CH 3, *make a 4 DC cluster, CH 3. Repeat from *4 more times
SL ST into top of first cluster, FO and join new color yarn
Rnd 2: CH 3 (counts as first DC), work 1 DC into same ST (top of cluster), work 4 DC into 3 CH space. *Work 2 DC into top of cluster, work 4 DC into 3 CH space. Repeat from *4 more times, join with a SL ST into top of beginning CH. FO and join new color yarn
Rnd 3: CH 3 (counts as first DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. * Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. Repeat from * until end. Join with a SL ST into top of beginning CH. FO and join new color yarn
Rnd 4: CH1, work 1 SC into same ST, work 1 SC into next 2 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 2 TR, 2 CH, 2 TR into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS. *Work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 2 TR, 2 CH, 2 TR into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS. Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into first SC. FO
Rnd 5: With main color yarn (cream) Work 1 SC into each ST all around, working 2 SC, 2 CH 2 SC into each corner 2 CH. SL ST into first SC.
Rnd 6: Work 1 SC into each ST all around, working 2 SC, 2 CH 2 SC into each corner 2 CH. SL ST into first SC. SL ST into first SC FO and weave in all ends.

Hi Trudy! You can use any combination of colors. Whatever you have in your scraps basket 🙂 (or house). Just have fun!
This looks fun…don't have all your pretty colours but promise to use up my scrap yarn I have all over the house! Hopefully it still turns out nice enough!
