Mitered Granny Crochet Square

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Size:
Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)

Colors:
Approx. – 104 – 120 yards (95 – 110 m) for complete square

INSTRUCTIONS:

Foundation Ring:
Make a 6 CH and join with a SL ST into the first CH to form a ring.
RND 1:
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into rnd, CH 3. *Work 3 DC into ring, CH 3,. Repeat from * twice more, join with a SL ST into the top of first 3 CH.

RND 2: SL ST into next 2 DC, CH 3, work (2 DC, CH 3, 3 DC) into same space to make corner. *CH 1, work (3 DC, CH 3, 3 DC) into next 3 CH space. Repeat from * twice more, CH 1, join with a SL ST into top of first 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

ROW 3:  (Change Color)Join yarn to any 3 CH corner space with a SL ST, CH 3(counts as 1 DC) work 2 DC into same space CH 1, work 3 DC into next 1 CH space, CH 1 work (3 DC, CH 3, 3 DC) into next CH 3 space, CH 1, work 3 DC into next 1 CH space, work 3 DC into next 3CH space, TURN

ROW 4: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 3 DC into next 1 CH space, CH 1 work 3 DC into next 1 CH space, CH 1, work (3 DC, CH3, 3 DC) into next CH 3 space, CH1 work 3 DC into next 1 CH space, CH 1 work 3 DC into next 1 CH space, CH 1 work 1 DC into top of 3rd CH of CH 3 from previous row
Fasten off and weave in ends.

ROW 5:  (Change Color)
Join yarn into last DC worked, CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into same ST.
CH 1, work 3 DC into each 1 CH space along the side of the square, CH1, work (3 DC, CH3, 3 DC) into next CH 3 space, CH 1, work 3 DC into each 1 CH space along the side of the square, CH 1, work 3 DC into 3rd of 3 CH of previous row, TURN

ROW 6: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), CH 1, work 3 DC into each 1 CH space along the side of the square, CH1, work (3 DC, CH3, 3 DC) into next CH 3 space, CH 1, work 3 DC into each 1 CH space along the side of the square, CH 1 work 1 DC into top of 3rd CH of CH 3 from previous row.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

ROW 7-8: (Change Color) Repeat rows 5 & 6

ROW 9-10: (Change Color) Repeat rows 5 & 6

ROW 11-12: (Change Color) Repeat rows 5 & 6

RND 13: (Change Color)
Join yarn into last DC worked, CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into same ST. *(CH 1, work 3 DC into next 1 CH space) x 6, CH 1 work (3 DC, CH 3, 3 DC) into next CH 3 space. Repeat from * once more.
*(CH 1, work 3 DC into next space between clusters) x 6, CH 1 work (3 DC, CH 3, 3 DC) into next CH 3 space. Repeat from * once more, ending with a  3 CH, 3 DC into same space as first 3 DC worked, SL ST into the top of the first 3 CH.

RND 14: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into each DC and 1 CH space of previous round – working 3 DC into each corner 3 CH space.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

  2. Thanks for the beautiful squares. Is there perhaps a slight error with the starting of Row 3 – should the additional 3dc not be left out, as I seem to be going round a corner and Row 4 does not tie up.
