The ‘Horsy’
The fourth in a series of cutesy animal granny squares!
SKILL LEVEL:
Easy

Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.

SIZE:
Approx 14 cm x 14 cm

MATERIALS:
Yarns: (This is to make 2 squares)
Double knitting/light worsted yarn
Approx 25 grams of beige
Small amounts of double knitting/light worsted yarn in brown,pastel blue and pastel pink
Small amounts of double knitting/light worsted yarn in black and white/cream

Hooks & Notions:
Size 3.50 mm Hook
Yarn Needle

GAUGE:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect – crocheting the same tension throughout will ensure squares are approx the same size.

I use US Crochet stitch terminology

INSTRUCTIONS

Make a magic circle with brown yarn
Rnd 1: CH3 into circle (counts as 1 DC), work 11 DC into circle, SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3CH (12 DC)
Rnd 2: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 2 DC into next ST. * Work 2 DC into each ST. Repeat from * until end of round, SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3CH (24 DC),
Rnd 3: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next ST. * Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST. Repeat from * until end of round, SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3CH (36 DC)
Rnd 4: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. * Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. Repeat from * until end of round, SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3CH (48 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

CH 10
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS;

Twist circle around and SL ST into SC next the start of the 10 CH – continue working along the opposite of CH;

Position head stripe and snout onto the brown circle and sew into place.
Note – snout bottom is flipped up and sewn on – see photos.

Ears: (make 2)
With brown yarn, CH 8
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 HDC into next ST; work 1 DC into next 5 STS;
continue in the round and SL ST into the space between last 2 DC worked;
CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); continue to work opposite first 7 STS worked;
work 1 DC into next 3 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 SL ST into last ST;
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Weave sewing tail thru the back stitching of ear to until the bottom part of ear;
sew ears into position – see photos.

Join pastel blue or pastel pink yarn into the 6th ST from the center ST at the start of the head stripe.
Rnd 5: CH3, work 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC into ST (first corner made), *SKIP 2 STS, work 3 HDC into next ST. Repeat from * 2 more times.
Work 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC into next ST (second corner made),*SKIP 2 STS, work 3 HDC into next ST. Repeat from * 2 more times.
Work 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC into next ST (third corner made),*SKIP 2 STS, work 3 HDC into next ST. Repeat from * 2 more times.
Work 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC into next ST (fourth corner made),*SKIP 2 STS, work 3 HDC into next ST. Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3CH
Rnd 6: SL ST into next 2 STS, starting in the 2 CH space of first corner, *Work 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC into corner, [work 3 DC into space between the 3 DC clusters of the previous round] x 4. Repeat from * 3 more times
SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3 CH, fasten off.
change color to brown yarn
Rnd 7: Starting in a corner – *Work 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC into corner, [work 3 DC into space between the 3 DC clusters of the previous round] x 5. Repeat from * 3 more times
SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3 CH, fasten off.

Cut pieces of yarn approx. 10 cm in length and using the exposed stitches in-between
the 3 DC clusters (blue), make a tassels for a fringe. Trim to desired length.

Eyes: (Make 2)
With white/ cream yarn

Make a magic ring
Rnd 1: CH3, work 11 DC into ring.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

With some black yarn embroider eye pupils onto eyes.

(optional) a mouth.
Sew eyes into position.
Add a small bow for decoration (optional)
