Groovy Granny Backbag – Free Crochet Pattern

Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.

MATERIALS:
Yarns:
Double knitting/light worsted yarn in various colors – Elle Family Knit or Elle Pullskein
50 grams skyblue
small amounts (20 grams or less) light brown; dark brown; beige and aran.

Hooks & Notions:
Hook 4.00 mm
Yarn needle

Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet

Notes:
I use US Crochet stitch terminology.
Due to the nature of this pattern – the yarn and hook used is only a suggestion and any substitute may be used.
Size of finished product will vary depending on yarn and also size of hook used.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Granny Square: Make 2 (approx 12 cm x 12 cm)
Note – squares color are random
With 4,00 mm Hook and yarn
Make a magic ring, CH 3

Rnd 1: Work 2 DC, CH2, 3DC, CH2,3DC, CH2,3DC,CH2, SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3CH. FO

Rnd 2: Change color – Join yarn with a SL ST into any corner, work 3CH, 2DC, CH2, 3DC. CH1, work *3DC, CH2, 3DC into next corner, CH1. Repeat from * 3 times more

Rnd 3: Change color – Join yarn with a SL ST into any corner, work 3CH, 2DC, CH2, 3DC. CH1, work 3DC into next 1CH space, CH1. *Work 3DC, CH2, 3DC into next corner, CH1, work 3DC into next 1CH space, CH1. Repeat from * 3 times more

Rnd 4: Change color – Join yarn with a SL ST into any corner, work 3CH, 2DC, CH2, 3DC. CH1, work 3DC into next 1CH space CH1, work 3DC into next 1CH space CH1. *Work 3DC, CH2, 3DC into next corner, CH1, work 3DC into next 1CH space CH1, work 3DC into next 1CH space CH1. Repeat from * 3 times more

Rnd 5: Change color to cream – join in  yarn with a SL ST into any corner, work 3CH, 1DC, CH2, 2DC. Work 1DC into each DC from previous round, working 2DC, CH2, 2DC into each corner
Fasten off after last rnd and weave in all ends.

Large Circle Granny Square: Make 1 (approx 24 cm x 24 cm)

With 4,00 mm Hook and yarn
Make a magic ring,

Rnd 1: CH3 (counts as 1DC), work 11DC into ring (12 DC), SL ST into top of 3rd CH
– change color
Rnd 2 CH3 (counts as 1DC), work 1 DC into same ST. Work 2 DC into each ST until end (24 DC), SL ST into to of 3rd CH
– change color
Rnd 3: CH3 (counts as 1DC). work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next ST. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST (36 DC). Repeat from * until end, SL ST into top of 3rd CH
– change color
Rnd 4: CH3 (counts as 1DC). work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS (48 DC). Repeat from * until end, SL ST into top of 3rd CH
– change color
Rnd 5: CH3 (counts as 1DC). work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 3 STS. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 3 STS (60 DC). Repeat from * until end, SL ST into top of 3rd CH
– change color
Rnd 6: CH3 (counts as 1DC). work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 4 STS. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 4 STS (72 DC). Repeat from * until end, SL ST into top of 3rd CH
– change color
Rnd 7: CH3 (counts as 1DC). work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 5 STS. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 5 STS (84 DC). Repeat from * until end, SL ST into top of 3rd CH
– change color
Rnd 8: CH3 (counts as 1DC). work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 6 STS. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 6 STS (96 DC). Repeat from * until end, SL ST into top of 3rd CH
– change color
Rnd 9: CH3 (counts as 1DC), work 2 DC into same ST, CH2, work 3 DC into same ST (corner made), CH1, SKIP 3 STS, work 3 DC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 SC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 DC  into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1.

Rnd 11: CH3 (counts as 1DC), work 1 DC into each ST all around – working 2 DC, 2CH, 2 DC into each corner.

Rnd 12: repeat round 11. Fasten off and weave in ends.Note: pattern adjustments for a more complete circle in the square (my original pattern was intended to pull the circle up at the corner) however if a complete round circle is preferred:Rnd 9: CH4 (counts as 1 TR), work 2 TR into same ST, CH2, work 3 TR into same ST (corner made), CH1, SKIP 3 STS, work 3 DC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 SC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 DC  into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1.
*Work 3 TR, 2 CH, 3 TR into next ST, (corner made), CH1, SKIP 3 STS, work 3 DC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 SC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 DC  into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into top of 3rd CH
Rnd 10: SL ST into next 3 STS, SL ST into corner.
CH4 (counts as 1 TR), work 2 TR into same ST, CH2, work 3 DC into same ST (corner made), CH1, SKIP 3 STS, work 3 DC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 DC  into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1.
*Work 3 DC, 2 CH, 3 DC into next ST, (corner made), CH1, SKIP 3 STS, work 3 DC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 SC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 SC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1, work 3 HDC into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1,work 3 DC  into next ST, SKIP 3 STS, CH1.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into top of 3rd CH
Fasten off after last rnd and weave in all ends.With light blue yarn – work up approx 39 HDC on just one side of the Circle Square – this counts as row 1; TURN

ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 HDC into first ST; work 1 HDC into each ST until end (39 HDC); TURN

ROW 3 – 28 (approx the same size as the large square): Repeat row 2.
Fasten off and weave in ends. 

The Flap For The Bag:

Whipstitch/sew the two small squares together: working up the border:
starting in one corner of a square (a short side) with a SL ST; then *work over the next 3 STS:
[1 SC; 2 HDC; 1 SC]; SL ST into the 1 CH space.
Repeat from * all around leaving one long side empty to attach to the opposite side of the large circle square.
NOTE: when reaching the join of the two squares – make a button loop of approx 8/9/10 CH depending on the size of your button.

Sew the two sides of the bag together.

The Straps:

Work up 8 SC along the bottom of the back and work 8 SC rows for length of strap required; repeat for other side/ OR CH 9; work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook and work 1 SC into each; TURN;
*CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST (8 SC); TURN. Repeat from * for required length of strap – attach straps to the back.

Finishing: Add a button for the flap and/or chain a string to weave thru the top round/row of the bag just beneath the opening. If preferred weave a ribbon 🙂

For the string I chained approx 200 STS and added some beads to the ends.
