Easy – Intermediate
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
Concentration required.

Yarn: Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light
Color – 4 colors – color change indicted in pattern

Hook: 4.00 mm

Size: 23 cm x 23 cm (approx. 9 inches)

Notes:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect

I use US Crochet stitch terminology

Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
DC – double crochet

SPECIAL STITCHES:
4 DC Cluster: work 4 double crochet stitches together
[yarn over hook; insert yarn into stitch; yarn over hook; pull loop through;
yarn over hook; pull through 2 loops] x 4; yarn over hook; pull through all five loops

COLORS: A – aran; B – blue; C – grey; D – pink

INSTRUCTIONS:

With D

FOUNDATION RING:
CH 6; join with a SL ST into the first CH to form a ring.

RND 1: CH 2 (this does NOT count as a stitch); work 12 HDC into ring; SL ST into top of first HDC made (12 HDC)

RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); CH 1; *work [1 DC into next HDC; CH 1] x 11; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(12 DC; 12 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join A into any 1 CH space

4 DC Cluster: work 4 double crochet stitches together
[yarn over hook; insert yarn into stitch; yarn over hook; pull loop through;
yarn over hook; pull through 2 loops] x 4; yarn over hook; pull through all five loops

RND 3: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC as is part of the FIRST 4 DC Cluster); *yarn over hook; insert yarn into 1 CH space; yarn over hook; pull loop through; yarn over hook; pull through 2 loops
Repeat from * 2 more times; yarn over hook; pull through 4 loops. CH 3;
[Work 4 DC Cluster into next 1 CH space; CH 3] x 11 times. SL ST into top of beginning Cluster.
(12 x 4 DC clusters)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into ANY 3 CH space

4 DC Cluster: work 4 double crochet stitches together
[yarn over hook; insert yarn into stitch; yarn over hook; pull loop through;
yarn over hook; pull through 2 loops] x 4; yarn over hook; pull through all five loops

RND 4: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC as is part of the FIRST 4 DC Cluster); *yarn over hook; insert yarn into 3 CH space; yarn over hook; pull loop through; yarn over hook; pull through 2 loops
Repeat from * 2 more times; yarn over hook; pull through 4 loops. CH 2;
[Work 1 DC into the top of the next Cluster of RND 3; CH 2; work a 4 DC Cluster into next 3 CH space; CH 2] x 11 times. Work 1 DC into next Cluster of RND 3; CH 2; SL ST into top of beginning Cluster.
(12 x 4 DC clusters and 12 x 1 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into the top of any Cluster

RND 5: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into the top of the cluster;
*CH 2; work 1 HDC into next DC;
CH 2: work 1 SC into top of next Cluster;
CH 2; work 1 SC into next DC;
CH 2; work 1 SC into top of next Cluster;
CH 2; work 1 HDC into next DC;
CH 2; work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next top of next Cluster.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times;
CH 2; work 1 HDC into next DC;
CH 2: work 1 SC into top of next Cluster;
CH 2; work 1 SC into next DC;
CH 2; work 1 SC into top of next Cluster;
CH 2; work 1 HDC into next DC;
CH 2; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 2 CH CORNER space.

RND 6:CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into same space;
*work 1 DC into next 2 DC; CH 2;
work 1 DC into next HDC; CH 2;
[work 1 DC into next SC; CH 2;] x 3;
work 1 DC into next HDC; CH 2;
work 1 DC into next 2 DC;
work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next 2 CH corner space.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
Work 1 DC into next 2 DC; CH 2;
work 1 DC into next HDC; CH 2;
[work 1 DC into next SC; CH 2;] x 3;
work 1 DC into next HDC; CH 2;
work 1 DC into next 2 DC; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join A into any 2 CH CORNER space.

To make the following round easier – mark the following stitches – this is where your 3 DC granny cluster stitches will be worked into.

RND 7: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into same 2 CH space – first corner made; CH 1; *SKIP 2 DC; work 3 DC (granny cluster) into next DC; CH 1;
SKIP next DC and 2 CH; work 3 DC (granny cluster) into next DC; CH 1
[SKIP next 2 CH; 1 DC; and 2 CH; work 3 DC (granny cluster) into next DC; CH 1] x 2;
SKIP next 2 CH and 1 DC; work 3 DC (granny cluster) into next DC; CH 1
SKIP 2 DC; work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into next 2 CH space; CH 1.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
*SKIP 2 DC; work 3 DC (granny cluster) into next DC; CH 1;
SKIP next DC and 2 CH; work 3 DC (granny cluster) into next DC; CH 1
[SKIP next 2 CH; 1 DC; and 2 CH; work 3 DC (granny cluster) into next DC; CH 1] x 2;
SKIP next 2 CH and 1 DC; work 3 DC (granny cluster) into next DC; CH 1;
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into the first DC of any 3 DC granny cluster at the START of a round (see photo).

RND 8: CH 1; work 1 SC into same DC; work 1 SC into next 2 DC;
*[CH 1; work 1 SC into next 3 DC] x 6; CH 3 for the corner; work 1 SC into next 3 DC.
Repeat from * 2 more times;
[CH 1; work 1 SC into next 3 DC] x 6; CH 3 for the corner; SL ST into first SC made.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any 3 CH space.

RND 9: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into 2 CH space – first corner made.[CH 1; SKIP 3 DC; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space] x 6; CH 1.
*Work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into next 3 CH space; [CH 1; SKIP 3 DC; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space] x 6; CH 1. Repeat from * 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 2 CH space.

RND 10: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same 2 CH space; work 1 DC into each DC and 1 CH space of previous round until next 2 CH corner space;
[Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into 2 CH corner space;
work 1 DC into each DC and 1 CH space of previous round until next 2 CH corner space.] x 3;
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 11: CH 1 (please note this does not count as a ST); work 1 SC into each DC  of previous round – work 3 SC into each corner; SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Final Stitch Count = 35 SC on each side PLUS 3 SC in each corner

 When blocked the Cluster Circle In A Square should be approx 9 inches (23 cm).

  2. In round 8 the repeat has work 1dc…. Should this be sc? The picture looks like sc.
