SNOW FLOWER EAR WARMERS

Snow Flower Ear Warmers – Free Crochet Pattern

For us living in the Cape (South Africa), Snow Flower Ear Warmers are a welcome accessory against the cold winter winds. My daughter is not a big ‘beanie’ and hat fan – so there are just perfect for her!

INSTRUCTIONS:

Getting Ready:
I used a 3 inch in diameter lid to cut out my batting circles – 1 inch for each side.

Hair Band / Alice Band Cover:
With 4, 50 mm hook

CH 5 (or chain to fit snugly around your band)
SL ST to form a ring; work 1 SC into each CH (5 SC);
continue working in the round; work 1 SC into each (5 SC);
make a tube long enough to slide the band in.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Ear Warmers: (Make 4)
With 4, 50 mm hook
Make a magic circle/ ring

RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 11 DC into ring (12 DC); SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH;
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME ST; work 2 DC into each ST all around (24 DC); SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH;

FOR FRONT PART ONLY:
RND 3: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME ST; work 1 DC into NEXT ST;
*work 2 DC into NEXT ST; work 1 DC into NEXT ST.
Repeat from * all around (36 DC); SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH;
SL SL all around circle – not too loosely so that it bends inwards a bit.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

FOR BACK PART ONLY:
RND 3: CH 2 (does not count as a ST); work 2 HDC into SAME ST; work 2 HDC into NEXT ST;
*work 2 HDC into NEXT ST; work 1 HDC into NEXT ST.
Repeat from * all around (36 HDC); SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH;
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Building The Ear Warmer:

Insert the batting into the bowl part of the front piece; place back over and sew the two pieces together;
Note – use on the ‘back loops’ to sew together; before sewing completely close – insert a small bit of fiberfill put on the front side to give it that ‘puffy’ look; insert the band into the ear warmer – just about half way depending on the size of the head 🙂 – sew opening close and secure band.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Snow Flower: (Make 2)
With 3,25 mm hook
CH 6 – SL ST into first CH to form a ring;
RND 1: *[CH 3; work 1 TR into ring; CH 3; SL ST into ring]. Repeat from * 5 more times.
RND 2: *[CH 4; SL ST into top of TR; CH 3; SL ST into 3rd CH from hook; SL ST into top of TR; CH 4; SL ST into ring]. Repeat from * 5 more times.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Sew a flower onto the front of each ear warmer.

I have been a crochet designer for more than 10 years. I love to think outside the box and to try and do things a bit differently. I love to learn new techniques and to challenge myself. I firmly believe that crochet should fun and evoke joy and pleasure. Creating and designing is one of my life's passions.
