Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
Concentration required.

Yarn: Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light – I used cotton yarn – check the main introduction page!
Color – 5 colors – color change indicted in pattern

Hook: 3.25 mm

Size: 23 cm x 23 cm (approx. 9 inches)

Notes:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect

I use US Crochet stitch terminology

Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet
BLP – back loop

Special Stitches:

FPDC – front post double crochet

Insert your hook into the front of your work, behind the indicated stitch, and then through your work such that your hook is now at the front of your work again. Pull through final 2 loops on your hook.

FPTR – front post treble crochet

 Yarn over 2 times, insert your hook from front to back to front around the post of the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, (yarn over, pull thru 2 loops on your hook) 3 times.

COLORS: Natural – A; Grapefruit – B; Butternut – C; Amazon – D; Kiwi – E

INSTRUCTIONS:

With Amazon – D;

CH 8; SL ST to form a ring;

RND 1: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 15 DC into ring (16 DC):
SL ST into 3rd CH of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Natural – A;

Join into the BACK-LOOP on ANY DC;

NOTE: this round in worked into the BACK-LOOPS ONLY

RND 2: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 2 DC into SAME BACK-LOOP;
SKIP next DC; CH 1;
*work 3 DC into next DC; SKIP NEXT DC; CH 1.
Repeat from * 6 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC; 8 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Butternut – C;

Join with a SC into any 1st DC of a 3 DC group

RND 3: CH 2; SKIP next DC; work 1 SC into next DC;
work 1 DC into the BACK-LOOP OF THE SKIPPED DC OF RND 1.
*Work 1 SC into next DC; CH 2; SKIP next DC; work 1 SC into next DC;
work 1 DC into the BACK-LOOP OF THE SKIPPED DC OF RND 1.
Repeat from * 6 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 DC; 16 SC; 8 x 2 CH spaces.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Kiwi – E;

Join into ANY 2 CH space

RND 4: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 2 DC into SAME 2 CH space; CH 1;
work 1 FPDC around next DC; CH 1.
*Work 3 DC into next 2 CH space; CH 1;
work 1 FPDC around next DC; CH 1.
Repeat from * 6 more times.
(8 FPDC; 24 DC; 16 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Grapefruit – B;

Join into any 1st DC of a 3 DC group

RND 5: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work 1 TR into SAME DC;
work 1 TR into next DC; work 2 TR into next DC;
work 1 FPTR over next FPDC.
*Work 2 TR into NEXT DC;
work 1 TR into next DC; work 2 TR into next DC;
work 1 FPTR over next FPDC.
Repeat from * 6 more times.
(8 x FPTR; 40 TR)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Natural – A;

Join into any FPTR

RND 6: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 3; 3 TR] into SAME FPTR; CH 3
SKIP next 2 TR; work 1 DC into NEXT TR; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 TR; work 1 HDC into NEXT FPTR; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 TR; work 1 DC into NEXT TR; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 TR.
*Work [3 TR; CH 3; 3 TR] into SAME FPTR; CH 3
SKIP next 2 TR; work 1 DC into NEXT TR; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 TR; work 1 HDC into NEXT FPTR; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 TR; work 1 DC into NEXT TR; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 TR.

With Kiwi – E;

Join into any 3 CH corner space

RND 7: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into SAME CORNER;
(CH 1; work 3 TR into next 3 CH space) 4 times; CH 1.
*Work  [3 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into next CORNER;
(CH 1; work 3 TR into next 3 CH space) 4 times; CH 1.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Amazon – D;

Join into any 2 CH corner space

RND 8: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; CH 2; 3 DC] into SAME CORNER;
(CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space) 5 times; CH 1.
*Work  [3 DC; CH 2; 3 DC] into next CORNER;
(CH 1; work 3 DC into next 3 CH space) 5 times; CH 1.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Butternut – C;

Join yarn into any 2 CH corner space;

RND 9: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 1 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
*Work [3 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 1 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 4th of starting 4 CH.

NOTE: you can remove or add after the border round to get your required size – you can change the stitches to SC/HDC/DC or TR.
Just Remember – to STOP at the SAME round for each of your squares to ensure easy joining and CORRECT (same) stitch count.

BORDER RND: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into each TR stitch AND 1 Ch space all around;
work [ 2 DC; 2 CH 2; 2 DC] into each CORNER space.
(35 DC per side = total stitch count 140 DC)
SL ST into 3rd of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
