Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
Concentration required.

Yarn: Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light – I used cotton yarn – check the main introduction page!
Color – 5 colors – color change indicted in pattern

Hook: 3.25 mm

Size: 23 cm x 23 cm (approx. 9 inches)

Notes:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect

I use US Crochet stitch terminology

Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet
BLP – back loop

Special Stitches:

3DCTOG: work 3 DC together into the SAME ch space

The video shows a square from the 2017 series – but the stitch work is the same (ignore the first petal)

FPDC – front post double crochet

Insert your hook into the front of your work, behind the indicated stitch, and then through your work such that your hook is now at the front of your work again. Pull through final 2 loops on your hook.

FPTR – front post treble crochet

 Yarn over 2 times, insert your hook from front to back to front around the post of the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, (yarn over, pull thru 2 loops on your hook) 3 times.

COLORS: Natural – A; Grapefruit – B; Butternut – C; Amazon – D; Kiwi – E

INSTRUCTIONS:

With Grapefruit – B;

CH 8; SL ST to form a ring;

RND 1: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 15 DC into ring (16 DC):
SL ST into 3rd CH of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Amazon – D;

Join into any DC

For this round work into back-loops only

RND 2: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME DC;
work 2 DC into each ST all around ( 32 DC);
SL ST into 3rd CH of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Natural – A;

Join into any DC

Note: you can start this round 2 ways;
a – SL ST around any DC – (insert hook from front to back then back to front around the post of the DC); then CH 5 (this will be your first FPDC AND 2 CH SPACE);
OR
b – Do a STANDING FPDC – you start with a normal standing DC BUT instead of working into the ST you work around the post of the ST; insert hook from front to back then back to front and complete your stitch.

RND 3: Do first FPDC (SEE NOTE); CH 2; SKIP next DC;
*FPDC around next DC; CH 2; SKIP next DC.
Repeat from * 14 more times. SL ST into top of standing DC/ or 3rd of 5 CH
(16 FPDC; 16 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Kiwi – E;

Join into any 2 CH space

RND 4: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work FPTR around the SKIPPED RND 2 DC;
work 1 DC into SAME 2 CH space; CH 1; SKIP next FPDC.
*Work 1 DC into next 2 CH space;
work FPTR around next SKIPPED RND 2 DC;
work 1 DC into SAME 2 CH space;
CH 1; SKIP next FPDC.
Repeat from * 14 more times. SL ST into 3rd CH of starting 3 CH.
(58 STS; 16 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Butternut – C;

Join into any FIRST DC you worked into a 2 CH space;

RND 5: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); SKIP NEXT FPTR; work 1 DC into next DC;
FPTR around SKIPPED RND 3 DC.
*Work 1 DC into next DC; SKIP NEXT FPTR; work 1 DC into next DC;
FPTR around SKIPPED RND 3 DC.
Repeat from * 14 more times. SL ST into 3rd CH of starting 3 CH.
(48 STS – yes this is correct – with this round we decreased with 10 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Grapefruit – B

Join into ANY ST with a SC

For this round work into back-loops only

RND 6: work 1 SC into each ST all around;
SL ST into first SC worked (48 SC).
Fasten off and weave in ends.

 

 

 

 

With Kiwi – E;

Join into any SC

RND 7: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 3; 3 TR] into SAME SC; CH 3
SKIP next 2 SC; work 1 DC into NEXT SC; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 SC; work 1 HDC into NEXT SC; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 SC; work 1 DC into NEXT SC; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 SC.
*Work [3 TR; CH 3; 3 TR] into SAME SC; CH 3
SKIP next 2 SC; work 1 DC into NEXT SC; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 SC; work 1 HDC into NEXT SC; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 SC; work 1 DC into NEXT SC; CH 3;
SKIP next 2 SC.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Natural – A;

Join into any 3 CH corner space

RND 8: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into SAME CORNER;
(CH 1; work 3 TR into next 3 CH space) 4 times; CH 1.
*Work  [3 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into next CORNER;
(CH 1; work 3 TR into next 3 CH space) 4 times; CH 1.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Grapefruit – B;

Join into any 2 CH corner space

*RND 9: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; CH 2; 3 DC] into SAME CORNER;
(CH 3; work 3DCtog into next 1 CH space) 5 times; CH 3.
*Work  [3 DC; CH 2; 3 DC] into next CORNER;
(CH 3; work 3DCtog into next 3 CH space) 5 times; CH 3.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Amazon – D;

Join yarn into any 2 CH corner space;

RND 10: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
*Work [3 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 4th of starting 4 CH.

NOTE: you can remove or add after the border round to get your required size – you can change the stitches to SC/HDC/DC or TR.
Just Remember – to STOP at the SAME round for each of your squares to ensure easy joining and CORRECT (same) stitch count.

BORDER RND: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into each TR stitch AND 1 Ch space all around;
work [ 2 DC; 2 CH 2; 2 DC] into each CORNER space.
(35 DC per side = total stitch count 140 DC)
SL ST into 3rd of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
