Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
Concentration required.

Yarn: Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light – I used cotton yarn – check the main introduction page!
Color – 5 colors – color change indicted in pattern

Hook: 3.25 mm

Size: 23 cm x 23 cm (approx. 9 inches)

Notes:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect

I use US Crochet stitch terminology

Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet
BLP – back loop

Special Stitches:

DC4tog – double crochet 4 stitches together

  • Yarn over hook,
  • insert hook in stitch(st), pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook.
  • Yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops, 2 loops left on hook.
  • Yarn over hook insert in next st, pull up a loop, 4 loops on hook.
  • Yarn over, pull through 2 loops, 3 loops left on hook.
  • Yarn over, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop, 5 loops on hook.
  • Yarn over, draw through 2 loops, 4 loops left on hook.
  • Yarn over hook, insert in next st, draw up a loop, 6 loops on hook.
  • Yarn over, draw hook through 2 loops, 5 loops left on hook.
  • Yarn over draw yarn through all 5 loops on hook.

The SHORT version:
[Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops] 4 times, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook—3 stitches decreased

COLORS: Natural – A; Grapefruit – B; Butternut – C; Amazon – D; Kiwi – E

INSTRUCTIONS:

With Kiwi – E;

CH 8; SL ST to form a ring;

RND 1: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 15 DC into ring (16 DC):
SL ST into 3rd CH of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Amazon – D;

NOTE: for this round work into BACK LOOPS (BLP) ONLY

RND 2: CH 5 (this counts as 1 DC AND 2 CH);
work 1 DC into next BLP; CH 2.
Repeat from * 14 more times (16 DC; 16 x 2 CH spaces).
SL ST into 3rd of 5 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends

With Butternut – C;

join yarn into ANY 2 CH space

RND 3: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 1 CH ] into SAME starting 2 CH space;
work [2 DC; 1 CH] into NEXT 2 CH space.
Repeat from * 14 more times (32 DC; 16 x 1 CH spaces);
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends

With Natural – A;

join yarn with a SC into ANY 1 CH space

RND 4: CH 3; SKIP 2 DC;
*work 1 SC into NEXT 1 CH space; CH 3; SKIP 2 DC.
Repeat from * 14 more times ( 16 x SC; 16 x 3 CH spaces);
SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends

With Grapefruit – B;

join yarn into ANY 3 CH space

RND 5: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 3 DC into SAME 3 CH space; CH 1;
*work 4 DC into NEXT 3 CH space; CH 1.
Repeat from * 14 more times ( 64 DC; 16 x 1 CH spaces);
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends

With Kiwi – E;

join yarn into ANY 1 CH space

RND 6: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH ; 3 DC] into SAME 1 CH space; CH 3;
(SKIP 4 DC work 1 SC into NEXT 1 CH space; CH 3) x 3.
*Work [3 DC;2 CH; 3 DC] into NEXT 1 CH space; CH 3;
(SKIP 4 DC work 1 SC into NEXT 1 CH space; CH 3) x 3.
Repeat from * 2 more times;  SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(4 x corners; 12 x SC; 16 x 3 CH spaces – 4 on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends

With Amazon – D;

join yarn into ANY 2 CH CORNER space

RND 7: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; 2 CH ; 3 TR] into SAME CORNER space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into NEXT 3 CH space; CH 1) 4 times.
*Work [3 TR; 2 CH ; 3 TR] into next 2 CH CORNER space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into NEXT 3 CH space; CH 1) 4 times.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 4th of 4 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends

With Butternut – C;

join yarn into ANY 2 CH CORNER space

RND 8: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH ; 3 DC] into SAME CORNER space; CH 3;
work (4DCtog; CH 3) 5 times.
*Work [3 DC; 2 CH ; 3 DC] into SAME CORNER space; CH 3;
work (4DCtog; CH 3) 5 times.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends

With Natural – A;

Join yarn into any 2 CH corner space;

RND 9: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
*Work [3 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 4th of starting 4 CH.

NOTE: you can remove or add after the border round to get your required size – you can change the stitches to SC/HDC/DC or TR.
Just Remember – to STOP at the SAME round for each of your squares to ensure easy joining and CORRECT (same) stitch count.

BORDER RND: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into each TR stitch AND 1 Ch space all around;
work [ 2 DC; 2 CH 2; 2 DC] into each CORNER space.
(35 DC per side = total stitch count 140 DC)
SL ST into 3rd of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
