Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
Concentration required.
Yarn: Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light – I used cotton yarn – check the main introduction page!
Color – 5 colors – color change indicted in pattern
Hook: 3.25 mm
Size: 23 cm x 23 cm (approx. 9 inches)
Notes:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect
I use US Crochet stitch terminology
Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet
BLP – back loop

Special Stitches:
5 DC Cluster:
FPDC – front post double crochet
Insert your hook into the front of your work, behind the indicated stitch, and then through your work such that your hook is now at the front of your work again. Pull through final 2 loops on your hook.
3DC Cluster:
- Step 1: Yarn Over hook insert hook into the next stitch in the row.
- Step 2: Yarn Over and draw through the first 2 loops on the hook.
- Step 3: Yarn Over insert our hook and draw through the loop, you should have 4 loops on your hook.
- Step 4: Yarn Over draw through the first 2 loops only and you should have 3 loops on your hook.
- Step 5: Yarn Over and insert hook and draw through that will give you 5 loops on your hook.
- Step 6: Yarn Over and draw through the first 2 loops. That will leave you with 4 loops on your hook and will leave 3 have finished double crochet sts.
- Step 7: Yarn Over and draw through all 4 loops on the hook.
- Step 8: Secure the cluster with a chain stitch.

INSTRUCTIONS:
With Kiwi – E;
CH 8; SL ST to form a ring;
RND 1: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 15 DC into ring (16 DC):
SL ST into 3rd CH of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Grapefruit – B;
Join into any DC
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 2: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME DC.
Work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(32 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Natural – A;
Join with a CH 3 AROUND (insert hook from front to back) any DC / or do a STANDING FPDC around any DC
RND 3: *CH 2; SKIP NEXT DC; work 1 FPDC around NEXT DC.
Repeat from * 14 more times; CH 2; SKIP next DC; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH / or top of STANDING FPDC.
(16 x FPDC; 16 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Amazon – D;
Join into with a 3 CH into ANY 2 CH space;
RND 4: work 2DC together into SAME space;
*CH 3; work 3DCtog Cluster into next 2 CH space.
Repeat from * 14 more times; CH 3; SL ST into starting 3 CH.
(16 x Clusters; 16 x 3 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Butternut – C;
join with a SC into the TOP OF ANY CLUSTER;
RND 5: (CH 1; work 1 FPDC around RND 3 FPDC; CH 1; work 1 SC into next CLUSTER.) x 15 times;
CH 1; work 1 FPDC around RND 3 FPDC; CH 1; SL ST into first SC worked.
(16 x FPDC; 16 x SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Kiwi – E;
Join into ANY DC
RND 6: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; 3 CH; 3 TR] into SAME DC;
CH 3; work 1 DC into NEXT FPDC;
CH 3; work 1 HDC into NEXT FPDC;
CH 3; work 1 DC into NEXT FPDC; CH 3.
*Work [3 TR; 3 CH; 3 TR] into NEXT DC;
CH 3; work 1 DC into NEXT FPDC;
CH 3; work 1 HDC into NEXT FPDC;
CH 3; work 1 DC into NEXT FPDC; CH 3.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 4th CH of 4 CH.

With Grapefruit – B;
Join into ANY corner 3 CH
RND 7: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into SAME corner 2 CH space; CH 1;
(work 3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) x 4.
*Work [3 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into next corner 2 CH space; CH 1;
(work 3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) x 4.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Amazon – D;
Join into any 2 CH corner space
RND 8: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into same corner space; CH 3;
(work 5DC Cluster into next 1 CH space; CH 3) 5 times.
*Work [3 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into same corner space; CH 3;
(work 5DC Cluster into next 1 CH space; CH 3) 5 times.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Butternut – C;
Join yarn into any 2 CH corner space;
RND 9: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
*Work [3 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 4th of starting 4 CH.
NOTE: you can remove or add after the border round to get your required size – you can change the stitches to SC/HDC/DC or TR.
Just Remember – to STOP at the SAME round for each of your squares to ensure easy joining and CORRECT (same) stitch count.
BORDER RND: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into each TR stitch AND 1 Ch space all around;
work [ 2 DC; 2 CH 2; 2 DC] into each CORNER space.
(35 DC per side = total stitch count 140 DC)
SL ST into 3rd of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
