Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
Concentration required.
Yarn: Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light – I used cotton yarn – check the main introduction page!
Color – 5 colors – color change indicted in pattern
Hook: 3.25 mm
Size: 23 cm x 23 cm (approx. 9 inches)
Notes:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect
I use US Crochet stitch terminology
Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet
BLP – back loop

Special Stitches:
5 DC POPCORN (PC):
- Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches into the same stitch.
- Drop the loop from your hook.
- Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
- Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.
- Work 1 CH to ‘close’ the popcorn
3TRtog CLUSTER:
- yarn over 2 times around hook.
- insert hook into next st and draw through 1 loop.
- yarn over draw through 2.
- yarn over and draw through 2.
- yarn over twice again.
- insert into that same st and draw through 1 loop.
- yarn over and draw through 2 loops.
- yarn over and draw through 2 loops, you should have 3 loops on your hook.
- yarn over over 2 times .
- insert into that same st and draw 1 loop through.
- yarn over and draw through 2 loops
- yarn over and draw through 2 more, now you should have 4 loops on your hook.
- yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
- yarn over and and do a SL ST to join them together.

INSTRUCTIONS:
With Kiwi – E;
CH 8; SL ST to form a ring;
RND 1: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 15 DC into ring (16 DC):
SL ST into 3rd CH of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Amazon – D;
Join into any DC
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 2: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work 2TRtog into SAME DC as 4 CH;
*CH 6; SKIP next DC; work 3TRtog into NEXT DC.
Repeat from * 6 more times; CH 6; SL ST into 4th of 4 CH.
(8 x Clusters; 8 x 6 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Butternut – C;
Join into with a SC into ANY 6 CH space
RND 3: Work 1 SC into SAME 6 CH space; work 1 TR into the BLP of RND 1 SKIPPED DC; work 2 SC into same starting 6 CH space; CH 1; SKIP CLUSTER.
*Work 2 SC into NEXT 6 CH space; work 1 TR into the BLP of RND 1 SKIPPED DC; work 2 SC into same 6 CH space; CH 1; SKIP CLUSTER.
Repeat from * 6 more times. SL ST into first SC worked.
(32 SC; 8 TR; 8 x 1 CH space)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Natural – A;
NOTE: when I refer to the ‘group‘ – the group consists of the following – 2 SC; 1 TR; 2 SC that was worked into the previous round.
Join into with a 3 CH (counts as 1 DC) into the FIRST SC of a group – (see note)
RND 4: work 1 DC into the next 4 STS of the starting group;
*CH 2; work 1 DC into each ST of NEXT group.
Repeat from 6 more times. SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
(40 DC; 8 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Grapefruit – B;
NOTE: for this round work into the BACK-LOOPS of each DC.
join with a SC into ANY FIRST DC OF A 5 DC GROUP
RND 5: Work 1 SC into next 4 DC; work 1 SC into NEXT 2 CH space;
work 1 TR into the 1 CH space of RND 3; work 1 SC into SAME 2 CH space.
*Work 1 SC into NEXT 5 DC; work 1 SC into NEXT 2 CH space;
work 1 TR into the 1 CH space of RND 3; work 1 SC into SAME 2 CH space.
Repeat from * 6 more times. SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 x TR; 56 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Kiwi – E;
NOTE: if you find that your flower cups a bit too much with only the 6 CH due to yarn or tension – change it to 7 or 8 CH. But this rounds flattens out with RND 7.
Join into ANY TR
RND 6: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into SAME TR;
CH 6; work 1 SC into NEXT TR; CH 6.
*Work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into NEXT TR;
CH 6; work 1 SC into NEXT TR; CH 6.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
(8 x 6 CH spaces; 4 x SC; 4 x corners)
DO NOT FASTEN OFF
RND 7: SL ST into next 3 DC;
CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 3; 3 TR] into next corner 2 CH space; CH 1;
work 3 DC; CH 1; 3 DC into next 6 CH space; CH 1;
work 3 DC; CH 1; 3 DC into next 6 CH space; CH 1;
*Work [3 TR; CH 3; 3 TR] into next corner 2 CH space; CH 1;
work 3 DC; CH 1; 3 DC into next 6 CH space; CH 1;
work 3 DC; CH 1; 3 DC into next 6 CH space; CH 1;
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 4th of 4 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Amazon – D;
Join into any 2 CH corner space
RND 8: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into same corner space; CH 3;
(work 5DC Popcorn into next 1 CH space; CH 3) 5 times.
*Work [3 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into same corner space; CH 3;
(work 5DC Popcorn into next 1 CH space; CH 3) 5 times.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Natural – A;
Join yarn into any 3 CH corner space;
RND 9: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
*Work [3 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into corner space; CH 1;
work (3 TR into next 3 CH space; CH 1) 6 times.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 4th of starting 4 CH.
NOTE: you can remove or add after the border round to get your required size – you can change the stitches to SC/HDC/DC or TR.
Just Remember – to STOP at the SAME round for each of your squares to ensure easy joining and CORRECT (same) stitch count.
BORDER RND: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into each TR stitch AND 1 Ch space all around;
work [ 2 DC; 2 CH 2; 2 DC] into each CORNER space.
(35 DC per side = total stitch count 140 DC)
SL ST into 3rd of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
