Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
Concentration required.

Yarn: Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light – I used cotton yarn – check the main introduction page!
Color – 5 colors – color change indicted in pattern

Hook: 3.25 mm

Size: 23 cm x 23 cm (approx. 9 inches)

Notes:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect

I use US Crochet stitch terminology

Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet
BLP – back loop

Special Stitches:

V-ST – work 1 DC; CH 1; 1 DC into same space

FPDC – front post double crochet

Insert your hook into the front of your work, behind the indicated stitch, and then through your work such that your hook is now at the front of your work again. Pull through final 2 loops on your hook.

INSTRUCTIONS:

With Pebble – B;

CH 6; SL ST to form a ring;

RND 1: CH 1; work 12 SC into ring (12 SC);
SL ST into first SC worked;

RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); CH 1;
(work 1 DC into next SC; CH 1) x 11;
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(12 DC; 12 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Skyfall – C;

join new color into any 1 CH space

RND 3: CH 4 (counts as 1 DC and 1 CH); work 1 DC into same space; CH 2;
*work 5DCtog into next 1 CH space; CH 2;
work V-st into next 1 CH space; CH 2.
Repeat from * 4 more times; work 5DCtog into next 1 CH space; CH 2;
SL ST into 3rd of 4 CH.
(6 x 5DCtog clusters; 6 x V-ST; 12 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Coaldust – D

join new color into any 2 CH space on the RIGHT of ANY V-ST

RND 4: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 FPDC around next DC; CH 1;
work 1 FPDC around next DC; work 1 DC into next 2 CH space.; CH 3;
SKIP 5DCtog cluster.
*Work 1 DC into next 2 CH space; work 1 FPDC around next DC; CH 1;
work 1 FPDC around next DC; work 1 DC into next 2 CH space.; CH 3;
SKIP 5DCtog cluster.
Repeat from * all around.
(12 FPDC; 12 DC; 6 x 3 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Seashore – E

join new color into any 1 CH space of a V-ST

RND 5: CH 4 (counts as 1 DC and 1 CH space); work 1 DC into same space;
CH 1; work 5 DC into next 3 CH space; CH 1.
*Work V-ST into next V-ST 1 CH space; CH 1; work 5 DC into next 3 CH space; CH 1.
Repeat from * all around. SL ST into 3rd of 4th CH.
(6 x 5 DC groups; 6 x V-ST)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Natural – A

join new color into any 1st DC of a 5 DC group – work into BACK-LOOPS only

RND 6: CH 1 (does NOT counts as a ST); work 1 HDC into DC; work 1 HDC into next 4 DC;
work 1 HDC into next 1 CH; work 1 HDC into next DC;
work 1 (long) TR into RND 3 V-ST 1 CH space;
work 1 HDC into next DC; work 1 HDC into next 1 CH.
*Work 1 HDC into next 5 DC;
work 1 HDC into next 1 CH; work 1 HDC into next DC;
work 1 (long) TR into RND 3 V-ST 1 CH space;
work 1 HDC into next DC; work 1 HDC into next 1 CH.
Repeat all around; SL ST into 1st HDC worked.
(60 HDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Pebble – B

join new color into any HDC worked into the FIRST DC OF A 5 DC GROUP.

RND 7: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); *work [2 TR; 3 CH; 3 TR] into same HDC;
CH 3; SKIP next 4 HDC; work 3 DC into the 1 CH SPACE HDC;
SKIP next (1 HDC; 1 (long) TR; 1 HDC); CH 3;
work 3 DC into next 1 CH SPACE HDC; CH 3;
SKIP next 4 HDC;
work [3 TR; 3 CH; 3 TR] into next HDC; CH 3:
SKIP next (1 HDC; 1 (long) TR; 1 HDC);
work 3 DC into  1 CH SPACE HDC; CH 3;
SKIP next 5 HDC; work 3 DC into next 1 CH SPACE HDC; CH 3;

Fasten off and weave ends.

With Skyfall – C;

join new color into any 3 CH corner space

For this round work into back-loops only

RND 8: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same space;
work 1 DC into next 3 TR
(work 1 DC into each next 3 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 DC) 2 times;
work 1 DC into each of next 3 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 TR.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same space;
work 1 DC into next 3 TR
(work 1 DC into each next 3 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 DC) 2 times;
work 1 DC into each of next 3 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 TR.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(25 DC on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Coaldust – D

join new color into any 2 CH corner space

For this round work into back-loops only

RND 9: Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into each corner;
work 1 SC into each DC of previous round.
SL ST into first SC worked; (27 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Seashore – E

join new color into any 2 CH corner space

For this round work into back-loops only

RND 10: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [1 TR; 2 CH; 2 TR] into same space;
work 1 TR into each SC until next corner.
*Work [2 TR; 2 CH; 2 TR] into same space;
work 1 TR into each SC until next corner.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
SL ST into 4th of 4 CH; (31 TR)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With Pebble – B

Join yarn into any 2 CH corner space;

For this round work into back-loops only

NOTE: you can remove or add after the border round to get your required size – you can change the stitches to SC/HDC/DC or TR.
Just Remember – to STOP at the SAME round for each of your squares to ensure easy joining and CORRECT (same) stitch count.

BORDER RND: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner;
work 1 DC into each TR until next corner.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner; work 1 DC into each TR until next corner.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
(35 DC per side = total stitch count 140 DC)
SL ST into 3rd of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

  2. I really enjoyed crocheting the first square of this series. I can see myself making a bigger Afghan with these squares. I cannot wait to start this second one. Thank you for sharing these patterns for this CAL.
