Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
Concentration required.
Yarn: Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light – I used cotton yarn – check the main introduction page!
Color – 5 colors – color change indicted in pattern
Hook: 3.25 mm
Size: 23 cm x 23 cm (approx. 9 inches)
Notes:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect
I use US Crochet stitch terminology
Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet
BLP – back loop

Special Stitches:
2DCtog: work 2 double crochet stitches together
3DCtog: work 3 double crochet stitches together
- Yarn over (YO) hook, insert hook in space, pull up a loop , 3 loops on hook.
- YO hook, pull through 2 loops. YO hook insert into same space, pull up a loop, 4 loops on hook. YO, pull through 2 loops, 3 loops on hook.
- YO, insert hook into same space. YO, pull up a loop, 5 loops on hook. YO, draw through 2 loops, 4 loops left on hook.
- YO draw through all 4 loops left on hook.

INSTRUCTIONS:
With Pebble – B;
CH 6; SL ST to form a ring;
RND 1: CH 1; work 12 SC into ring (12 SC);
SL ST into first SC worked;
RND 2: work into back-loops – CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); CH 1;
(work 1 DC into next SC; CH 1) x 11;
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(12 DC; 12 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Skyfall – C;
join new color into any 1 CH space
RND 3: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 2DCtog into same space;
(CH 2; work 3DCtog into next 1 CH space ) x 11; CH 2; SL ST into top of 2DCtog cluster.
(12 Clusters)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Coaldust – D;
join new color into any 2 CH space;
RND 4: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 2DCtog into same space; CH 1; work 3DCtog into SAME space;
*CH 3; work 3DCtog into next 2 CH space;
CH 3; work [3DCtog; 1 CH; 3DCtog] into next 2 CH space.
Repeat from * 4 more times; CH 3; work 3DCtog into next 2 CH space; CH 3;
SL ST into top of 2DCtog.
(18 Clusters; 12 x 3 CH spaces; 6 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Seashore – E;
join new color into any CH space with a SC;
RND 5: (CH 3; work 1 SC into next CH space) x 17 times; CH 3; join with a SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Natural – A;
join new color into any 3 CH space
RND 6: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 2 DC into same space;
(work 3 DC into next 3 CH space) 3 times; CH 2;
work 3 DC into next 3 CH space) 5 times; CH 2.
(Work 3 DC into next 3 CH space) 4 times; CH 2;
work 3 DC into next 3 CH space) 5 times; CH 2.
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

With Pebble – B;
NOTE: next round requires concentration – please note that on the 5 x 3 DC group sides -you will skip 3 DC, BUT
on the 4 x 3 DC group sides you will only skip 2 DC.
join new color into the 2 CH space BEFORE a 5 x 3DC group side;
RND 7: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); *work [2 TR; 3 CH; 3 TR] into same chain space;
CH 3; SKIP next 3 DC; work 1 SC into next 3 DC; CH 3; SKIP next 3 DC;
work 1 SC into next 3 DC; CH 3; SKIP next 3 DC.
Work [3 TR; 3 CH; 3 TR] into next 2 CH space;

work 1 DC into next 3 TR
(work 1 DC into each next 3 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 DC) 2 times;
work 1 DC into each of next 3 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 TR.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same space;
work 1 DC into next 3 TR
(work 1 DC into each next 3 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 DC) 2 times;
work 1 DC into each of next 3 CH; work 1 DC into next 3 TR.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(25 DC on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Coaldust – D;
join new color into any 2 CH corner space
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 9: Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into each corner;
work 1 SC into each DC of previous round.
SL ST into first SC worked; (27 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Seashore – E;
join new color into any 2 CH corner space
For this round work into back-loops only
RND 10: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [1 TR; 2 CH; 2 TR] into same space;
work 1 TR into each SC until next corner.
*Work [2 TR; 2 CH; 2 TR] into same space;
work 1 TR into each SC until next corner.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
SL ST into 4th of 4 CH; (31 TR)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With Pebble – B;
Join yarn into any 2 CH corner space;
For this round work into back-loops only
NOTE: you can remove or add after the border round to get your required size – you can change the stitches to SC/HDC/DC or TR.
Just Remember – to STOP at the SAME round for each of your squares to ensure easy joining and CORRECT (same) stitch count.
BORDER RND: CH 3 (this counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner;
work 1 DC into each TR until next corner.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner; work 1 DC into each TR until next corner.
Repeat from * 2 more times.
(35 DC per side = total stitch count 140 DC)
SL ST into 3rd of starting 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
