Traditional Granny Stitch Blanket – Free Crochet Pattern

This Traditional Granny Stitch Blanket is timeless – there are many beautiful and unique versions available.

This is my version: I made this blanket as a gift for family member who had a baby.
I wanted a soft play of color that was not complicated by a difficult pattern – something that worked up quickly and could be jazzed up by simply adding an appliqué!

INSTRUCTIONS:

The Blanket:

Notes: DC cluster = 3 DC into the same stitch

Starting with blue yarn and 5,00 mm hook

Rnd 1: CH 3. work 2 DC into the first ch, CH 1. *DC cluster into the same stitch, CH 1* 3 times.  SL ST  to the top of the beginning CH.

Rnd 2: SL ST in the next 2 STS and into the CH 1 space. CH 2, work 2 DC into the same CH 1 space. CH 1, work a DC cluster into the same CH 1 space. *DC cluster, CH 1, DC cluster in the next CH 1 space, repeat from * all around. SL ST to the top of the first CH 2.

Rnd 3: SL ST in the next 2 STS and into the CH 1 space. CH 2, 2 DC into the same CH 1 space. CH 1, work a DC cluster into the same CH 1 space. Work a DC cluster into the space between the clusters on the previous round. *DC cluster, CH 1, DC cluster in the next CH 1 space. DC cluster into the space between the clusters on the previous row, repeat from * all around . SL ST in to the top of the first CH 2.

For all of the remaining rounds, you will be continuing in the same manner. You will work 2 DC clusters into each corner, with a CH1 in between them.  You will work 1 DC cluster into each space between the clusters in the previous round.

This is the basic instructions for working a granny square 🙂

Changing colors:

Cut first yarn and weave in ends. Rejoin second color into any CH 1 space – continue with pattern

Color sequence for blanket:
6 x rnds of blue
* 2 x rnds of cream, 2 x rnds of green, 2 x rnds of blue. Repeat from *3 more times

Border:  (I know the border is extremely simple – but I wanted the focus to be on the colors and not any fancy stitching!)

With cream yarn work 4 rnds of SC – work 1 SC, CH1, 1 SC into each corner.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

The Flower:

With yellow double knitting light worsted yarn and the 3,50 mm hook

Make a magic ring

Rnd 1: CH3 (counts as 1 DC) work 11 DC into ring (12 DC), SL ST into top of 3 CH

Rnd 2: *CH5, work a SL ST into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST (4 SC), skip 1 ST, SL ST into next.

Repeat from * 5 more times

Rnd 3: SL ST into the first ST of the first 5 CH, CH1, work 1 SC into same ST, work 1 HDC into the next ST, work 1 DC into the next ST, work 2 DC into the last ST – continue working down the other side – work 2 DC opposite the 2 DC,

work 1 DC opposite the 1 DC, work 1 HDC opposite the 1 HDC, work 1 SC opposite the 1 SC.

*SL ST into the first ST of the next 5 CH, CH1, work 1 SC into same ST, work 1 HDC into the next ST, work 1 DC into the next ST, work 2 DC into the last ST – continue working down the other side – work 2 DC opposite the 2 DC, work 1 DC opposite the 1 DC, work 1 HDC opposite the 1 HDC, work 1 SC opposite the 1 SC.

Repeat from * 4 more times – 6 petals made

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing
