  • READ the instructions through first;
  • special stitches are noted and linked to tutorials (if necessary) for each part;
  • please check your stitch count – this IS important for joining!
  • All sizes mentioned are approximate only – this ALL depends on YOUR hook, YOUR yarn and YOUR tension.
    – for this project to be joined with the least effort be sure to use the SAME hook throughout!
  • I use US Crochet stitch terminology.

What you will crochet:

2 x 6 inch (15 cm) in height and 18 inch in length rectangles

4 x 6 inch squares

INSTRUCTIONS:

Striped Rectangle: Make 2

Colors I used:

  • rectangle square 1 – (A) natural; (I) watermelon; (B) sepia; (J) pomegranate; (A) natural.
  • rectangle square 2 – (J) pomegranate; (B) Sepia; (I) watermelon; (A) natural; (J) pomegranate.

Takes approx to 45/60 minutes to make one rectangle – depending on skill and how quickly you crochet.

NOTE: THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT – You WILL HAVE TO go down at least 2 hook sizes – if you used a 4,00 mm you will need to use a 3, 50 mm OR 3, 25 mm!!
The reasonwhen working straight squares or rectangles like these to make them line up and match the size of your squares to which you intend on joining them – if you use the same hook size the rectangles are much larger – this is due to the tension – squares because they are worked in the round are ‘tighter’. Squares/rectangles worked in rows are ‘looser’.

I used a 3, 50 mm for my rectangles and I should have a used a 3, 25 mm – due to the fact that I crochet loosely.
But once blocked the squares fit the rectangle!

With yarn – CH 28

ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; (27 SC); TURN
ROW 2-15: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work Cross Stitch x 12; work 1 DC into last 2 STS TURN

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join new yarn into any DC

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join new yarn into any DC

RND 3: CH 2 (does not count as a ST); *work 2 DC into next DC ; work 1 DC into next DC**.
Repeat from * to ** all around; SL ST into first DC made (36 DC).
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join new yarn into any DC

RND 4: CH 2 (does not count as a ST); *work 2 DC into next DC ; work 1 DC into next 2 DC**.
Repeat from * to ** all around; SL ST into first DC made (48 DC).
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join new yarn into any DC

RND 6: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into same DC; work 1 DC into next 3 STS;
work 1 HDC into next 3 STS; work 1 SC into next 2 STS; work 1 HDC into next 3 STS; work 1 DC into next 3 STS.
*Work [3 TR; CH 2; 3 TR] into same DC; work 1 DC into next 3 STS;  work 1 HDC into next 3 STS;
work 1 SC into next 2 STS; work 1 HDC into next 3 STS; work 1 DC into next 3 STS.**
Repeat from *to** 2 more times. (80 STS – 20 STS on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join new yarn into any 2 CH corner space.

NOTE: For this square to MATCH the stitch count of 25 STS – you will need to increase 3 SC evenly along each side – how to increase: work 2 SC into a ST x 3

RND 7: CH 1;*work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into 2 CH corner space; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner – increasing 3 x times – see note.** Repeat from *to** 3 more times.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

If you count the STITCHES from corner to corner (2 CH space to 2 CH space) you SHOULD have 25 STS.
