Crochet Stocking Gift Bag – Free Crochet Pattern
Supplies/Materials:
- Yarn – Blue Label Classic Pullskein DK Lurex (White & Red); Elle Gold Green– approx 260/320 yards (180 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
- Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – I used Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.
Finished Size:
Length: 11 inch (28 cm)
Width: 8 ½inch (22 cm)

Note – the A (red) counts for the normal and sparkly red I used – the Sparkly is NOT necessary for this project!
- A – Red (60/70 g)
- B – White (15/20 g)

Instructions:
RS – right side.
FRONT:
With A – CH 41
RS – ROW 1: work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; TURN.
(40 SC)
ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 SC into FIRST SC; work 1 DC into next SC.
*Work 1 SC into next SC; work 1 DC into next SC. ** Repeat from * to ** until end; TURN.
ROW 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into FIRST DC; work 1 DC into next SC.
*Work 1 SC into next DC; work 1 DC into next SC. ** Repeat from * to ** until end; TURN.
ROW 4: repeat ROW 3.
RS – ROW 5: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST until end.
(40 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With B – join into FIRST SC of last ROW.
RS – ROW 6: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.
ROW 7 – 10: repeat instructions for row 2 – 5.
With A – join into FIRST SC of last ROW.
RS – ROW 11: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.
ROW 12 – 15: repeat instructions for row 2 – 5.
With B – join into FIRST SC of last ROW.
RS – ROW 16: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.
ROW 17 – 20: repeat instructions for row 2 – 5.
With A – join into FIRST SC of last ROW.
RS – ROW 21: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.
ROW 22 – 25: repeat instructions for row 2 – 5.
With B – join into FIRST SC of last ROW.
RS – ROW 26: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.
ROW 27 – 30: repeat instructions for row 2 – 5.
With A – join into FIRST SC of last ROW.
RS – ROW 31: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.
ROW 32 – 35: repeat instructions for row 2 – 5.
BACK:
With A – CH 41
RS – ROW 1: work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; TURN.
(40 SC)
Note: the CH 1 at the start DOES NOT count as a STITCH.
ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 HDC into each SC until end; TURN.
ROW 3: CH 1; work 1 HDC into each HDC until end; TURN.
Repeat ROW 3 until back measure the same size as front.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
JOINING:
With any yarn (I used A).
Join FRONT and BACK together on the sides and bottom with a SC (single crochet) edge – with front facing towards you.
TOP BORDER:
With any yarn (I used A).
RND 1: Join in a corner where you joined the two pieces together and work up SC evenly all around the top opening.
Join with a SL ST into the FIRST SC worked.
RND 2 – 5: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
BOW TRIM:
Horizontal Strip:
With C – join with a SC into a edge SC on the left hand side about 4 inch (10 cm) from the top border.
ROW 1: work 1 SC into next 7 edge SC; TURN.
ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN
(8 SC)
Repeat ROW 2 until you can reach the other side edge – I worked 21 ROWS.
RS – Last ROW: work 1 SC into opposite 8 edge SC.
Fasten off and weave ends.
Vertical Strip:
With C – join with a SC into a bottom edge SC – measure from the right side about 3 ½ inch (9 cm).
Repeat instructions as for horizontal strip.
Repeat ROW 2 until you can reach the other side edge – I worked 48 ROWS.
RS – Last ROW: work 1 SC into the stitches of the rows just underneath the first top border round.
Fasten off and weave ends.
Bow:
With C – CH 11.
ROW 1: work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; TURN.
(10 SC)
ROW 2 – 60: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN
(10 SC)
SL ST the two short sides together.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With same yarn or another color;
Cut a long tail and wrap several times around the center pulling tightly to pucker the bow; sew onto trim – where the two strips cross each other.
OPTIONAL:
To hang gift bag as a stocking:
With bag facing towards you CH a loop at the right back corner.
SL ST into a SC; CH 15; SL ST into the next SC; work 15 SC into loop;
SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Or
Give your gift bag handles:
Make 1 or 2:
Make a foundation chain of as many stitches as required.
ROW 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC until end; TURN.
ROW 2; CH 1; work 1 HDC into each SC until end; TURN.
ROW 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into each HDC until end; TURN.
Repeat ROW 2 and 3 as required or fasten off and sewing handles into position.
