Kai Rain Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Supplies/Materials:
- Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
- Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:
Easy/Intermediate – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
PATTERN NOTES:
Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.
Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)
Colors:
- A – Natural (6g)
- B – Sand/Baby Yellow (7g)
- C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (6g)
- D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
- E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (8g)
- F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (3g)
- G – Peacock/Aubergine (10g)
Instructions:
With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.
Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.
RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join B into any DC.
RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join C into any DC.
RND 3: CH 3: work 1 DC into same DC; work 1 FPDC around next DC. *Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 FPDC around next DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.(24 DC; 12 x FPDC = 36 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join D into FIRST DC of 2 DC group.
RND 4: CH 3; work 1 DC into next DC; work 2 FPDC around next FPDC.
*Work 1 DC into next 2 DC; work 2 FPDC around next FPDC. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.(24 DC; 24 FPDC = 48 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join E into ANY DC AFTER a FPDC.
RND 5: CH 3; work 1 DC into next DC; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC; CH 2; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC.
*Work 1 DC into next 2 DC; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC; CH 2; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.(24 FPDC; 24 DC; 12 x 2 CH spaces = 60 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join F into any FPDC AFTER a 2 CH space.
RND 6: CH 1; work 1 SC into SAME ST; work 1 SC into next 2 DC; work 1 SC into next FPDC; CH 2.
*Work 1 SC into next FPDC; work 1 SC into next 2 DC; work 1 SC into next FPDC; CH 2.
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 1st SC worked.(12 x 2 CH spaces; 48 SC = 60 STS)
Tip: If you have a tight tension CH 3 in the next round.
RND 7: CH 1; work 1 SC into SAME SC; CH 2; SKIP next 2 SC; work 1 SC into next SC; SL ST into next 2 CH space.
*Work 1 SC into next SC; CH 2; SKIP next 2 SC; work 1 SC into next SC; SL ST into next 2 CH space.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 1st SC worked.
(24 SC; 12 x 2 CH spaces; 12 x SL ST’s = 48 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join G into any 2 CH space.
RND 8: CH 3; work 3 DC into same space; CH 1; work 1 FPTR around next Rnd 5 FPDC; work 1 TR into next Rnd 5 2 CH space; work 1 FPTR around next Rnd 5 FPDC; CH 1.
*Work 4 DC into next 2 CH space; CH 1; work 1 FPTR around next Rnd 5 FPDC; work 1 TR into next Rnd 5 2 CH space; work 1 FPTR around next Rnd 5 FPDC; CH 1.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(48 DC; 24 FPTR;12 TR; 24 x 1 CH spaces = 108 STS.)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join A into any FIRST DC of a 4 DC group.
RND 9: CH 3; work 1 DC into next 3 DC; CH 2; work 1 FPDC around NEXT TR; CH 2.
*Work 1 DC into 4 DC; CH 2; work 1 FPDC around next TR; CH 2. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.(48 DC; 12 FPDC; 24 x CH 2 spaces = 84 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Squaring:
With B join into any FPDC.
RND 10: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR/or work Standing TR); work [1 TR; 3 CH; 2 TR] into SAME FPDC; CH 2; work 1 DC into 2nd and 3rd DC of next 4 DC group; CH 2; work 1 HDC into next FPDC; CH 2; work 1 SC into 2nd and 3rd DC of next 4 DC group; CH 2; work 1 HDC into next FPDC; CH 2; work 1 DC into 2nd and 3rd DC of next 4 DC group; CH 2.
*Work [2 TR; 3 CH; 2 TR] into SAME FPDC; CH 2; work 1 DC into 2nd and 3rd DC of next 4 DC group; CH 2; work 1 HDC into next FPDC; CH 2; work 1 SC into 2nd and 3rd DC of next 4 DC group; CH 2; work 1 HDC into next FPDC; CH 2; work 1 DC into 2nd and 3rd DC of next 4 DC group; CH 2. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 4th of 4 CH.
(4 TR; 6 x 2 CH spaces; 4 DC; 2 FPDC, 2 SC on each side)
RND 11: SL ST into next TR; SL ST into corner space; CH 1 (does NOT count as a stitch); work [2 HDC; CH 2; 2 HDC] into corner space; work 2 HDC into each 2 CH space and 1 HDC into each ST until next corner.
*Work [2 HDC; 2 CH; 2 HDC] into next corner space; work 2 HDC into each 2 CH space and 1 HDC into each ST until next corner. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(28 HDC on each side = 112 HDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
NOTE: for the next 4 rounds work into the THIRD LOOP of each HDC – this is the loop located right at the back of the stitch AFTER the normal front and back loop.
Join C into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 12: CH 1 (does NOT count as a stitch); work [2 HDC; CH 2; 2 HDC] into corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space.
*Work [2 HDC; CH 2; 2 HDC] into corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(32 HDC on each side = 128 HDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends
Join D into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 13: CH 1 (does NOT count as a stitch); work [1 HDC; CH 2; 1 HDC] into corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space.
*Work [1 HDC; CH 2; 1 HDC] into corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(34 HDC on each side = 136 HDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends
Join E into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 14: CH 1 (does NOT count as a stitch); work [1 HDC; CH 2; 1 HDC] into corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space.
*Work [1 HDC; CH 2; 1 HDC] into corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(36 HDC on each side = 144 HDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join G into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 15: CH 1 (does NOT count as a stitch); work 3 HDC into corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space.
*Work 3 HDC into corner space; work 1 HDC into each HDC until next corner space.. **
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(36 HDC on each side NOT including the corners; 3HDC x 4 = 12 HDC = 156 HDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
