Hama Rose Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
  • Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:

Easy/Intermediate  – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop

PATTERN NOTES:

Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.

Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)

Colors:

  • A – Natural (6g)
  • B – Sand/Baby Yellow (9g)
  • C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (6g)
  • D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
  • E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (8g)
  • F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (4g)
  • G – Peacock/Aubergine (9g)

Instructions:

With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.

Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.

RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.  (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any DC.

RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any DC.

Special Stitch:
Starting Popcorn:
CH 3; work 4 DC into same DC; remove hook; insert into 3rd of 3 CH then LAST DC; yarn over; pull through both STS.
Popcorn – work 5 DC into same DC; remove hook; insert into FIRST then LAST DC; yarn over; pull through both DC..

RND 3: Work Starting Popcorn; CH 2; SKIP next DC.
* Work Popcorn into next DC; CH 2; SKIP next DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times.
SL ST into Top of Starting Popcorn.
(12 x Popcorns; 12 x 2CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any RND 2 SKIPPED DC.
Note: you will be working BEHIND RND 3.

RND 4: CH 1; work 1 SC into same SKIPPED DC; CH 3.
*Work 1 SC into next SKIPPED DC; CH 3. **Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 1st SC worked.
(12 SC; 12 x 3 CH spaces )

RND 5: SL ST into next 3 CH space; CH 3; work 1 DC into same 3 CH space; SL ST into top of RND 3 Popcorn; work 2 DC into SAME 3 CH space.
*Work 2 DC into next3 CH space; SL ST into top of RND 3 Popcorn;; work 2 DC into SAME 3 CH space.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(12 x Petals; 12 SL STS = 60 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note: you will be working BEHIND RND 5.
To join yarn E – insert hook from BACK to FRONT around a RND 5 SL ST and work 1 SC.

RND 6: CH 5.
*Work 1 SC around next SL ST; CH 5.** Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 1st SC worked.
(12 x 5 CH spaces; 12 SC)

Special Stitch:
Picot: CH 3; SL ST into 3rd CH from hook.

RND 7: SL ST into 5 CH space; CH 1; work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 1 DC; Picot; 1 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into same 5 CH space.
*Work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 1 DC; Picot; 1 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into next 5 CH space. Repeat from * to ** 10 more times.
SL ST into first SC worked.
(12 Petals)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note: you will be working BEHIND RND 7.
To join yarn F – insert hook from BACK to FRONT around a RND 6 SC and work 1 SC.

RND 8: CH 5.
*Work 1 SC around next SC; CH 5.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 1st SC worked.
(12 x 5 CH spaces; 12 SC)

RND 9: SL ST into next 5 CH space; work CH 3; work 4 DC into 5 CH space.
*Work 5 DC into next 5 CH space. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(12 Petals = 60 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

With G join into any space in-between a pair of RND 9 petals.

RND 10: CH 1; work 1 SC; CH 3; insert hook from back to front around both DC of RND 7 Petal and work SL ST; CH 3.
*Work 1 SC into next space in-between RND 9 petals; CH 3; insert hook from back to front around both DC of RND 7 Petal and work SL ST; CH 3.** SL ST into 1st SC worked.
(24 x 3 CH spaces; 12 SC; 12 SL STS)

Special Stitch:
Starting ST: CH 3; work 3DCtog.
4DCtog: work 4 double crochet stitches together into 1 space

RND 11: SL ST into next 3 CH space; work Starting 4DCtog; CH 3.
*Work 4DCtog into next 3 CH space; CH 3. **
Repeat from * to ** 22 more times;
SL ST into top of Starting ST.
(24 x 4DCtog; 24 x 3 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends

With A join into any 3 CH space.

RND 12: CH 1; work 1 SC into same space; CH 3.
*Work 1 SC into next 3 CH space; CH 3. **
Repeat from * to ** 22 more times;
SL ST into 1st SC worked.

Squaring:

With B join into any 1 CH space.

RND 14: CH 4 (this counts as 1 TR/or work Standing TR); work [1 TR; 3 CH; 2 TR] into space; CH 3; work 1 DC into next 1 CH space; CH 3; work 1 HDC into next 1 CH space; CH 3; work 1 SC into next 1 CH space; CH 3; work 1 HDC into next 1 CH space; CH 3; work 1 DC into next 1 CH space; CH 3.

TIP: place a stitch marker into your 1 CH corner spaces or if you have a tight tension work 2 CH for the corners.

RND 16: CH 1; work [2 SC; CH 1; 2 SC] into corner space; work 1 SC into each DC until next corner.
*Work [2 SC; CH 1; 2 SC] into next corner space; work 1 SC into each DC until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times.
SL ST into 1st SC worked.
(32 SC on each side = 128 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 1 CH corner space.

RND 17: CH 1; work [1 SC; CH 1; 1 SC] into corner space; work 1 SC into each SC until next corner.
*Work [1 SC; CH 1; 1 SC] into next corner space; work 1 SC into each SC until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times.
SL ST into 1st SC worked.
(34 SC on each side = 136 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join E into any 1 CH corner space.

RND 18: CH 1; work [1 SC; CH 1; 1 SC] into corner space; work 1 SC into each SC until next corner.

SL ST into 1st SC worked.
(36 SC on each side = 144 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join G into any 1 CH corner space.

RND 19: CH 1; work 3 SC into corner space; work 1 SC into each SC until next corner.
