This Umiko Glow Crochet Square is part of the Crochet A Block squares throw crochet along.
Crochet 25 squares – each different and unique to make a beautiful throw.
Umiko: Japanese for “child of the sea.”

Umiko Glow Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Supplies/Materials:

• Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
• Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
• Scissors
• Yarn needle

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:

Easy/Intermediate  – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop

PATTERN NOTES:

Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.

Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)

Colors:

• A – Natural (6g)
• B – Sand/Baby Yellow (5g)
• C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (6g)
• D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
• E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (7g)
• F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (3g)
• G – Peacock/Aubergine (6g)

Instructions:

NOTE:
RNDS 3 – 7 will cause the center to twist slightly – this is correct!

With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.

Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.

RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.  (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any DC.

RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any DC.

RND 3: CH 3; work 1 DC into next 4 DC; CH 4; SKIP next DC.
*Work 1 DC into next 5 DC; CH 4; SKIP next DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(5 DC on each side = 20 DC; 4 x 4 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any DC AFTER a 4 CH space.

Special Stitch:
5DCtog: Work 5 double crochet stitches together into same DC. CH 1 to lock.
RND 4: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC: work 1 DC into next 3 DC; work 2 DC into next DC; CH 2; work 1 FPTR into SKIPPED RND 2 DC; work 5DCtog into 4 CH space; work 1 FPTR into SKIPPED RND 2 DC; CH 2.
*Work 2 DC into next DC; work 1 DC into next 3 DC; work 2 DC into next DC; CH 2; work 1 FPTR into SKIPPED RND 2 DC; work 5DCtog into 4 CH space; work 1 FPTR into SKIPPED RND 2 DC; CH 2.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(7 DC on each side = 28 DC; 4 x 5DCtog; 8 x FPTR; 8 x 2 CH spaces.)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join E into DC AFTER a FPTR /2 CH space
Special Stitch: FPDC
Front Post Double Crochet

RND 5: CH 3; work 1 DC into next 6 DC; CH 4; SKIP next FPTR; work 1 FPDC around 5DCtog; CH 4; SKIP next FPTR.
*Work 1 DC into next 7 DC; CH 4; SKIP next FPTR; work 1 FPDC around 5DCtog; CH 4; SKIP next FPTR.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(7 DC on each side =  28 DC;4 x FPDC; 8 x 4 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join F into any DC AFTER a 4 CH space.

Note: Concentration required for next round.

FPTR: Front Post Treble
FPDC: Front Post Double Crochet

RND 6: CH 3; work 1 DC into next 6 DC; work 1 DC into next 4 CH space; work 1 FPTR around RND 4 FPTR; work 1 DC into SAME 4 CH space; CH 1; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC; CH 1; work 1 DC into next 4 CH space; work 1 FPTR around RND 4 FPTR; work 1 DC into SAME 4 CH space.
* Work 1 DC into next 7 DC; work 1 DC into next 4 CH space; work 1 FPTR around RND 4 FPTR; work 1 DC into SAME 4 CH space; CH 1; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC; CH 1;  work 1 DC into next 4 CH space; work 1 FPTR around RND 4 FPTR; work 1 DC into SAME 4 CH space.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(11 DC and 2 FPTR on each side = 13 DC = 52 STS; 4 x FPDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join G into any corner FPDC.

RND 7: CH 3; work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into FPDC; SKIP 1 CH space; work 1 HDC into next 13 STS.
* Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into FPDC; SKIP 1 CH space; work 1 HDC into next 13 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(17 STS on each side = 4 DC; 13 HDC = 68)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join A into any 2 CH corner space.

SL ST into first SC worked.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 11: CH 3; work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same corner; work 1 DC into next 6 SC; (CH 1; SKIP next DC; work 1 DC into next SC) x 8 times; work 1 DC into next 5 SC.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next corner; work 1 DC into next 6 SC; (CH 1; SKIP next DC; work 1 DC into next SC) x 8 times; work 1 DC into next 5 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3^rd of 3 CH.
(23 DC; 8 x 1 CH spaces = 31 on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join E into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 12: CH 1; work [2 SC; 2 CH; 2 SC] into same corner; work 1 SC into next 8 STS; (work 1 DC into SKIPPED DC of RND 10; work 1 SC into next DC) x 8 times; work 1 SC into next 7 STS.
*Work [2 SC; 2 CH; 2 SC] into next corner; work 1 SC into next 8 STS; (work 1 DC into SKIPPED DC of RND DC; work 1 SC into next DC) x 8 times; work 1 SC into next 7 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times;
SL ST into first SC worked.
(8 DC; 27 SC  = 35 STS on each side; 4 x 2 CH corner spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join G into any 2 CH corner space.

Note: for this round to match all previous squares in the last round number total – I compensated to add a ST at the start of each side.

RND 13: CH 1; work 3 SC into corner; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.
*Work 3 SC into next corner space; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(36 SC on each side NOT including the corners; 3 SC x 4 = 12 SC = 156 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
