Back Post Frame Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
  • Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:

Easy/Intermediate  – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop

PATTERN NOTES:

Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.

Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)

Colors:

  • A – Natural (5g)
  • B – Sand/Baby Yellow (5g)
  • C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (4g)
  • D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
  • E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (7g)
  • F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (3g)
  • G – Peacock/Aubergine (7g)

Instructions:

With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.

Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.

RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.  (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any DC.

RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any DC.

RND 3: CH 3; work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into same ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 SC into next SC; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS.
*Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 SC into next SC; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(9 STS on each side = 36 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 2 CH corner space

RND 4: CH 3; work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner space; work 1 DC into next 9 STS.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next corner space; work 1 DC into next 9 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(13 STS on each side = 52 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join E into any 2 CH corner space.

Special Stitch:
BPDC: Back Post Double Crochet

  • Yarn over and insert your hook from back to front between the posts of the first and second double crochet in the row below, and then from front to back again between the posts of the second and third stitches.
  • The hook should now be positioned horizontally in front of the double crochet that you’re working around.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
  • You now have 3 loops on the hook.
  • Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice.
  • You’ve made one complete back post double crochet (BP dc).

RND 5: CH 3; work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner space; work BPDC around each of next 13 STS.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner space; work BPDC around each of next 13 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(4 DC; 13 BPDC = 17 STS on each side = 68 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join F into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 6: CH 3; work [2 CH; 1 DC] into corner space; work 1 DC into next 17 STS.
*Work [1 DC; CH 2; 1 DC] into next corner space; work 1 DC into next 17 STS.**
Repeat fro * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 5 CH.
(19 STS on each side = 76 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join G into any 2 CH space.

Special Stitch:
BPDC: Back Post Double Crochet

RND 7: CH 3; work [2 CH; 1 DC] into corner space; work BPDC around each of next 19 STS.
*Work [1 DC; 2 CH; 1 DC] into corner space; work BPDC around each of next 19 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 5 CH.
(2 DC; 19 BPDC = 21 STS on each side = 84 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join A into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 8: CH 3; work 4 DC into same corner space; work 1 DC into next 21 STS.
* Work 5 DC into next corner space; work 1 DC into next 21 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(21 DC on each side not including corners; 5 DC into each corner = 104 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any 3rd DC (center) of corner 5 DC group.

RND 9: CH 1; work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into DC; work 1 SC into next 25 DC.
*Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into next DC (should be 3rd DC (center) of corner 5 DC group); work 1 SC into next 25 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(27 SC on each side = 108 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any 2 CH corner space.

RND 10: CH 1; work [1 HDC; 2 CH; 1 HDC] into corner space; work 1 HDC into next 27 SC.
*Work [1 HDC; 2 CH; 1 HDC] into next corner space; work 1 HDC into next 27 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(29 HDC on each side = 116 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 2 CH corner space.

Join G into any 2 CH corner space.

Note: for this round to match all previous squares in the last round number total – I compensated to add a ST at the start of each side.

RND 13: CH 1; work 3 SC into corner; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.
*Work 3 SC into next corner space; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(36 SC on each side NOT including the corners; 3 SC x 4 = 12 SC = 156 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
