Popcorn Star Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Supplies/Materials:
- Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
- Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:
Easy/Intermediate – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
PATTERN NOTES:
Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.
Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)
Colors:
- A – Natural (5g)
- B – Sand/Baby Yellow (5g)
- C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (4g)
- D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
- E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (7g)
- F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (3g)
- G – Peacock/Aubergine (7g)
Instructions:
Please Note: Overlay Section is optional.
With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.
Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.
RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join B into any DC.
RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join C into any DC.
Special Stitch:
Starting Popcorn: CH 3; work 4 DC into same DC; remove hook; insert into 3rd of 3 CH then LAST DC; yarn over; pull through both STS.
Popcorn – work 5 DC into same DC; remove hook; insert into FIRST then LAST DC; yarn over; pull through both DC.
RND 3: Work Starting Popcorn; CH 3; SKIP next DC; work 1 DC into next DC; CH 3; SKIP next DC.
*Work Popcorn into next DC; CH 3; SKIP next DC; work 1 DC into next DC; CH 3; SKIP next DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 4 more times; SL ST into top of Starting Popcorn.
(6 x Popcorns; 6 DC; 12 x 3 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join D into any 3 CH space
RND 4: CH 3; work 2 DC into same space; CH 2; SKIP next ST.
*Work 3 DC into next 3 CH space; CH 2; SKIP next ST.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(12 x 3 DC groups; 12 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends
Join E into a 2 CH space above a DC ST.
Special Stitch:
FPTR: front post treble crochet
RND 5: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR); work [2 TR; 2CH 3 TR] into same space;
*work 1 DC into next 3 DC; work FPTR around next Popcorn; work 1 DC into next 3 DC; work 1 FPTR around next DC; work 1 DC into next 3 DC.

Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(36 SC on each side NOT including the corners; 3 SC x 4 = 12 SC = 156 SC)

Overlay Crochet Section:
Note: you will be working on top of your square.
With F join into SKIPPED DC of RND 2 BEFORE A DC below a Corner.
Continue as follows: work 1 SC; CH 4; SL ST around BOTH RND 4 corner DC; CH 4; work 1 SC into next SKIPPED RND 2 DC; CH 1; *(work 1 SC into next SKIPPED RND 2 DC; CH 4; SL ST around RND 4 FPTR; CH 4; work 1 SC into next SKIPPED RND 2 DC; CH 1) x 2 times; **
