Front Post Frame Crochet Square – Free Crochet Pattern
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Supplies/Materials:
- Yarn – Vinnis Colours Nikkim (cotton yarn) – approx 130 yards (119 meters) (colors listed in Pattern Notes); Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light.
- Hook – 4. 00 mm (G) – I used Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:
Easy/Intermediate – Basic stitches, with some special stitches – video tutorial available.
Special Stitches noted in the instructions.
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
PATTERN NOTES:
Gauge:
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and hook sizing will differ.
Finished Size:
Approx. 9 inch (23 cm)
Colors:
- A – Natural (5g)
- B – Sand/Baby Yellow (5g)
- C – Pale Sage/Ballet Pink (4g)
- D – Pale Blue Green/Pink (7g)
- E – Kingfisher/Raspberry (7g)
- F – Golden Brown/Old Gold (3g)
- G – Peacock/Aubergine (7g)
Instructions:
With A – make a magic ring/or CH 6; SL ST to form a ring.
Note: CH 3 – counts as 1 DC in every round – OR you can do a Standing DC.
RND 1: CH 3; work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. (12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join B into any DC.
RND 2: CH 3; work 1 DC into same DC; work 2 DC into each DC all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join C into any DC.
RND 3: CH 3; work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into same ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 SC into next ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS.
*Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 SC into next ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(9 STS on each side = 36 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join D into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 4: CH 3; work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into corner space; SKIP next ST; work 3 DC into next ST; (SKIP next 2 STS; work 3 DC into next ST) twice; SKIP next ST.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into next corner space; SKIP next ST; work 3 DC into next ST; (SKIP next 2 STS; work 3 DC into next ST) twice; SKIP next ST.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(3 x 3 DC groups; 4 DC = 13 DC on each side = 52 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join E into any 2 CH corner space.
Special Stitch:
FPDC: front post double crochet
RND 5: CH 3; work [2 CH; 1 DC] into corner space; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 9 DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC.
*Work [1 DC; 2 CH; 1 DC] into next corner space; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 9 DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(9 FPDC; 6 DC = 15 STS on each side = 60 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join F into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 6: CH 3; work [2 CH; 1 DC] into corner space; SKIP next ST; work 3 DC into next ST; (SKIP next 2 STS; work 3 DC into next ST) x 4 times; SKIP next ST.**
*Work [1 DC; 2 CH; 1 DC] into next corner space; SKIP next ST; work 3 DC into next ST; (SKIP next 2 STS; work 3 DC into next ST) x 4 times; SKIP next ST.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(5 x 3 DC groups; 2 DC = 17 STS on each side = 68 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join G into any 2 CH space.
RND 7: CH 3; work [2 CH; 1 DC] into corner space; work 1 DC into next DC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 15 DC; work 1 DC into next DC.
*Work [1 DC; 2 CH; 1 DC] into next corner space; work 1 DC into next DC; work 1 FPDC around each of next 15 DC; work 1 DC into next DC.**Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(15 FPDC; 4 DC = 19 STS on each side = 76 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join A into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 8: CH 3; work 4 DC into same corner space; work 1 DC into next 19 STS.
* Work 5 DC into next corner space; work 1 DC into next 19 STS.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(19 DC on each side not including corners; 5 DC into each corner = 96 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join B into any 3rd DC (center) of corner 5 DC group.
RND 9: CH 1; work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into DC; work 1 SC into next 23 DC.
*Work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into next DC (should be 3rd DC (center) of corner 5 DC group); work 1 SC into next 23 DC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(25 SC on each side = 100 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join C into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 10: CH 1; work [2 HDC; 2 CH; 2 HDC] into corner space; work 1 HDC into next 25 SC.
*Work [2 HDC; 2 CH; 2 HDC] into next corner space; work 1 HDC into next 25 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first HDC worked.
(29 HDC on each side = 116 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join D into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 11: CH 1; work [1 SC; 2 CH; 1 SC] into corner space; work 1 SC into next 29 HDC.

Join G into any 2 CH corner space.
Note: for this round to match all previous squares in the last round number total – I compensated to add a ST at the start of each side.
RND 13: CH 1; work 3 SC into corner; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.
*Work 3 SC into next corner space; work 2 SC into next ST; work 1 SC into each ST until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(36 SC on each side NOT including the corners; 3 SC x 4 = 12 SC = 156 SC)
