Granny Frilled Flower Crochet Square
Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Supplies/Materials:
Yarn – Scheepjes Catona (25 grams/62.5 meters) 100% Mercerized Cotton
Weight – Fingering (14 wpi) 1: Super Fine
Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – Clover
Scissors
Yarn needle
Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
Gauge:
Not necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and/or hook sizing will differ.
Using the SAME hook and yarn will ensure your squares are consistent in size.
Size:
Square – 4,5 x 4,5 inches (12 x 12 cm)
Approx – 30 – 34 yards (32 – 34 m) for complete square
Colors:
A – Pale Yellow
B – Soft Pink
C – Pink
D – Soft Green
E – Green
F – White
Special Stitches:
Cluster (4DCtog) – work 4 double crochet stitches together into same space.
FPDC – front post double crochet
BPSC – back post single crochet.
Instructions:
With A – CH 6; SL ST into first CH to form a ring/or make a magic circle;
RND 1: CH 2 (does NOT count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into FIRST DC worked.
(12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With B – join into any DC;
RND 2: CH 3; work 3DCtog into SAME DC; CH 1; *work Cluster into next DC; CH 1.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into top of 3DCtog.
(12 Cluster petals; 12 x 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With C – join into any 1 CH space;
Note: if you have a tight tension CH 3.
RND 3: work 1 SC into CH space; CH 2. * Work 1 SC into next 1 CH space; CH 2.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(12 SC; 12 x 2 CH spaces)
RND 4: *Work [1 SC; 1 HDC] into next 2 CH space; work FPDC around next Cluster; work [1 HDC; 1 SC] into SAME 2 CH space.**
Repeat from * to ** 11 more times; SL ST into FIRST SC worked.
(12 FPDC = 12 Petals)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With D – join with a BPSC around any RND 3 SC;
RND 5: *CH 3; work BPSC around next RND 3 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; CH 3; SL ST into first BPSC worked;
(12 BPSC; 12 x 3 CH spaces)
RND 6: SL ST into next CH 3 space; work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 2 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into 3 CH space.
*Work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 2 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into next 3 CH space**
Repeat from * to ** 10 mores times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(12 x petals)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With E – join with a BPSC around any RND 5 BPSC;
RND 7: CH 4; work BPSC around next RND 5 BPSC.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; CH 3; SL ST into first BPSC worked;
(12 BPSC; 12 x 4 CH spaces)
RND 8: SL ST into next CH 4 space; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into same 4 CH space; CH 1; (work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 1 DC; 1 TR; 1 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into next 4 CH space; CH 1) twice.
*Work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into same 4 CH space; CH 1; (work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 1 DC; 1 TR; 1 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into next 4 CH space; CH 1) twice.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(4 x corners; 6 x petals)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With A – join into any corner 2 CH space;
RND 9: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into corner space; (CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space) three times; CH 1.
*Work [ 3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into corner space; (CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space) three times; CH 1.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(60 DC; 16 x 1 CH spaces; 4 x 2 CH corner spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With F – join into any 2 CH corner space;
RND 10: *Work 3 SC into corner space; work 1 SC into each DC and 1 CH space until next corner.**
Repeat from * to ** 3 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
(60 SC = 15 SC on each side; 12 corner SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
