That 70’s Crochet Cushion Pt 1
Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Intermediate
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
You will need to know basic stitches like SC (single crochet) and DC (double crochet).
Concentration required for joining.
Materials
- Hook – 3, 50 mm (E)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- 1 x 2,5 cm (1 inch) button.
- 35 cm (14 inches) throw cushion inner.
Yarn:
Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton (50 grams/119 meters)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
Approx 300 grams / 714 meters
For this project I used an assortment of colors:
A – Natural = approx. 15g
B – Golden Brown = approx. 20/30g
C – Chestnut = approx. 20/30g
D – Burnt Orange = approx. 40/50g
E – Princess Blue Bell = approx. 20/30g
F – Blue Bell = approx. 20/30g
G – Grey = approx. 40/50g
H – Princess Mink = approx. 40/50g
Tension | Gauge
With recommended size hook and yarn – granny square size should be approx. 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches)
Size
Final Cushion Size = 35 cm (14 inches). Fits standard throw cushion inner.
Remember –if you use/choose a different yarn weight/hook size the cushion will be a different size!

Instructions:
The Front:
There are two different types of granny squares used in the construction of this cushion.
Color Combos for Square =
One = A, B, C, D |
Two = A, E, F, G |
Special Stitch:
Starting Cluster – CH 3 (counts as DC) work 2DCtog (2 double crochet stitches together to form one stitch) into SAME space.
Cluster – work 3DCtog (3 double crochet stitches together to form one stitch) into SAME space.
Cluster Flower Granny Square:
Make 4
With yarn A – CH 4; SL ST into first CH to make a ring/or make a magic circle.
RND 1: CH 2 (this does NOT count as a stitch; work 12 DC into ring/circle; SL ST into first DC worked.
(12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With yarn B/E – join into any DC.
RND 2: Work Starting Cluster; CH 2; *work Cluster into next DC; CH 2.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into top of Starting Cluster.
(12 x Clusters; 12 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With yarn C/F – join into any 2 CH space.
RND 3: Work [Starting Cluster; CH 2; Cluster] 2 CH space; CH 2.
*Work [Cluster, CH 2; Cluster] into next 2 CH space; CH 2.**
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into top of Starting Cluster.
(24 x Clusters; 24 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With yarn D/G – join into any 2 CH space worked in-between 2 Clusters worked into SAME space.
RND 4: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into 2 CH space; CH 3; SKIP next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 2 CH space; CH 3; SKIP next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 2 CH space; CH 3.
*Work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into 2 CH space; CH 3; SKIP next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 2 CH space; CH 3; SKIP next 2 CH space; work 1 SC into next 2 CH space; CH 3.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
RND 5: SL ST into next 2 DC; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC; work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into next 2 CH corner space; CH 1;
work 3 DC into next 3 CH space; CH 1; work 3 DC into next 3 CH space; CH 1; work 3 DC into next 3 CH space; CH 1. *Work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into next 2 CH corner space; CH 1;
work 3 DC into next 3 CH space; CH 1; work 3 DC into next 3 CH space; CH 1; work 3 DC into next 3 CH space; CH 1.** Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Simple Circle Granny Square:
Make 4
With yarn A – CH 4; SL ST into first CH to make a ring/or make a magic circle.
RND 1: CH 2 (this does NOT count as a stitch; work 12 DC into ring/circle; SL ST into first DC worked.
(12 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With yarn B/E – join into any DC.
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME ST. Work 2 DC into each ST all around;
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With yarn C/F – join into any DC
RND 3: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into SAME ST; work 1 DC into next DC.
*Work 2 DC into next ST; work 1 DC into next ST.**
Repeat from * to ** all around; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(36 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With yarn D/G – join into any DC
RND 4: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into DC; CH 3; SKIP next 2 DC; work 1 SC into next DC; CH 3; SKIP next 2 DC; work 1 SC into next DC; CH 3.
*Work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into DC; CH 3; SKIP next DC; work 1 SC into next DC; CH 3; SKIP next DC; work 1 SC into next DC; CH 3.**
