That 70’s Crochet Cushion Pt 3
Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Intermediate
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
You will need to know basic stitches like SC (single crochet) and DC (double crochet).
Concentration required for joining.
Materials
- Hook – 3, 50 mm (E)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- 1 x 2,5 cm (1 inch) button.
- 35 cm (14 inches) throw cushion inner.
Yarn:
Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton (50 grams/119 meters)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
Approx 300 grams / 714 meters
For this project I used an assortment of colors:
A – Natural = approx. 15g
B – Golden Brown = approx. 20/30g
C – Chestnut = approx. 20/30g
D – Burnt Orange = approx. 40/50g
E – Princess Blue Bell = approx. 20/30g
F – Blue Bell = approx. 20/30g
G – Grey = approx. 40/50g
H – Princess Mink = approx. 40/50g
Tension | Gauge
With recommended size hook and yarn – granny square size should be approx. 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches)
Size
Final Cushion Size = 35 cm (14 inches). Fits standard throw cushion inner.
Remember –if you use/choose a different yarn weight/hook size the cushion will be a different size!

Instructions:
The Back:
Repeat instructions for the Cluster Flower Granny Square until RND 5 but do not fasten off.
RND 1 – A
RND 2 – B
RND 3 – Princess Bluebell
RND 4/5 – Chestnut
With F – join into any 2 CH corner space.
RND 6: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC; work [2 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into next 2 CH corner space;
(CH 1; work 3 DC into next 3 CH space) x 4 times; CH 1.
*Work [3 DC; 2 CH; 3 DC] into next 2 CH corner space;
(CH 1; work 3 DC into next 3 CH space) x 4 times; CH 1.**
Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Continue working in the granny square stitch as follows:
RND 7 – D
RND 8 – G
RND 9 – H
RND 10 – B
RND 11 – E
RND 12 – C
RND 13 – F
RND 14 – D
RND 15 – G
RND 16/17/18 – H
(18 groups of 3 DC on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Joining the FRONT and BACK:
Join H into Square 9 2 CH corner – this is the left side of pillow.
RND 19: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; CH 1; SL ST into opposite corner of BACK; 3 DC] into corner;
(SL ST into opposite 1 CH space of BACK); work 3 DC into next 1 CH space) x 17 times;
SL ST into opposite 1 CH space of BACK.
*Work [3 DC; CH 1; SL ST into opposite corner of BACK; 3 DC] into corner;
(SL ST into opposite 1 CH space of BACK); work 3 DC into next 1 CH space) x 17 times;
SL ST into opposite 1 CH space of BACK.**
Repeat from * to ** once more.
Work [3 DC; CH 1; SL ST into opposite corner of BACK; 3 DC] into corner;
(CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space) x 17 times; CH 1; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Flap:
With G – With front facing towards you, join into 2 CH space.
ROW 1 (RS): Work 1 SC into corner; work 1 SC into each DC; SKIP all the 1 CH spaces; work 1 SC into corner;
(59 SC); TURN.
ROW 2 (WS): CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC across (59 SC); TURN.
ROW 3: SC2tog; work 1 SC into each SC across until last 2 SC; SC2tog (57 SC) TURN.
ROW 4 to 25: Repeat ROW 3.
ROW 26 (WS): CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC across (9 SC); TURN
ROW 30: (SL ST; 1 SC) into first SC; 1 HDC into next SC; 1 DC into next SC; work 2 TR into next SC;
work Bobble – CH 4; work 4DCtog into 4 CH from hook; SL ST into 4 CH; SKIP next SC – this creates the buttonhole – work 2 TR into next SC; work 1 DC into next SC; work 1 HDC into next SC; work (1 SC; SL ST) into last SC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Flap Border:
With D – work the Crab Stitch along the edge of the flap/ or work SC evenly along the edge.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Finishing:
Insert pillow inner and sew on button.
