Hip Vintage Crochet Blanket Joining Plus Border

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn –Moya 100% Cotton Double Knit (cotton yarn) assortment of colors and grams.
    Weight – DK (11 wpi)
  • Hook – 3, 50 mm (E) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
RS – right side
WS- wrong side

Gauge:
Not necessary for this project to be perfect.
However if you use a different yarn and/or hook sizing will differ.
Using the SAME hook and yarn will ensure your squares are consistent in size.

Final blanket size approx. 53 x 53 inches (135 x 135 cm)

Special Stitches:

Starting Popcorn: 

  • CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 4 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.
  • Chain 1 to lock your popcorn stitch.

Popcorn:

  • Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
  • Drop the loop from your hook.
  • Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
  • Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.
  • Chain 1 to lock your popcorn stitch.

With D – join into any corner FPSC.

RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into FPSC; work 1 DC into next 25 SC.
*Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next FPSC; work 1 DC into next 25 SC.**
Repeat from * to ** two more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 2: SL ST into next DC; SL ST into next corner 2 CH; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; CH 2; 3 DC] into corner; SKIP next 2 DC; CH 1; (work 3 DC into next DC; SKIP next 2 DC; CH 1;) x 9 times.
*Work [3 DC; CH 2; 3 DC] into next 2 CH corner space; SKIP next 2 DC; CH 1; (work 3 DC into next DC; SKIP next 2 DC; CH 1;) x 9 times.**

Square 8-12/14-18/20-24/26-30/32-36:

RND 1: repeat Square 1 RND 1.

RND 2: SL ST into next DC; SL ST into next corner 2 CH; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; CH 2; 3 DC] into corner; SKIP next 2 DC; CH 1; (work 3 DC into next DC; SKIP next 2 DC; CH 1;) x 9 times.
*Work [3 DC; CH 1; SL ST into opposite corner of previous square; 3 DC]; SKIP next 2 DC; SL ST into opposite CH 1 space of previous square; (work 3 DC into next DC; SKIP next 2 DC; SL ST into opposite CH 1 space of precious square) x 9 times.**

Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into top of Starting Popcorn.

RND 3: *Work 3 SC into top of Popcorn; work 1 SC into each DC until next Popcorn.**
Repeat from * to ** 3 more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
