The perfect project to use up all your bits and pieces from your leftover yarn.
Crochet Number Appliques 0-9
Note: This pattern was originally published it 2013 and has been reworked and revamped.
Difficulty Level | Skills Required
Easy
Basic stitches in simple variations, shaping and finishing.
You will need to know basic stitches like SC (single crochet).
Special stitches explained and provided in the instructions.
Materials
- Hook – 3, 50 mm (E)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Yarn:
Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton (50 grams/119 meters)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
Approx 1-2 grams for each number.
Yarn Substitute:
The pattern suggests Cotton DK yarn, but you are not limited to this type of yarn. Any yarn can be used if you take into consideration your sizing of your numbers will differ.
Tension | Gauge
Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect.
Size
Approx 2 inches / 5 cm in length
Remember – if you use/choose a different yarn weight/hook size the numbers will be different in size.

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side
Special Stitches
SC2tog: single crochet 2 stitches together.
SC4tog: single crochet 4 stitches together:
Insert hook into ST and draw up a loop.
Insert hook into next ST and draw up a loop.
Insert hook into next ST and draw up a loop.
Insert hook into next ST and draw up a loop.
Yarn over and dram through ALL 5 loops on hook.
Instructions:
Number Zero:
With yarn – CH 15.
SL ST into 1st CH to form ring.
Work 20 SC into ring SL ST into 1st SC.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
Number One:
With yarn – CH 12.
Work 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook and 1 SC into each of next 10 CH. (11 SC).
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
Number Two:
With yarn – CH 23.
Work 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook.
SC2tog over next 2 CH; SC2tog over next 2 CH;
work 1 SC into next CH;
SC2tog over next 2 CH, SC2tog over next 2 CH, SC2tog over next 2 CH;
work 1 SC into next 5 CH; work 3 SC in next CH, work 1 SC into 4 CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
Number Three:
With yarn – CH 28.
Work 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook
work 1 SC into next CH; SC4tog over next 4 CH;
work 1 SC into next CH; SC4tog over next 4 CH;
work 1 SC into next CH; work 1 SC into next CH;
work 3 SC in next CH; work 1 SC into next CH; work 1 SC into next CH;
SC4tog over next 4 CH; work 1 SC into next CH;
SC4tog over next 4 CH; work 1 SC into each of last 2 CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
Number Four:
With yarn – CH 29.
Work 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into next 5 CH;
SC4tog over next 4 CH; work 1 SC into next 6 CH;
SC4tog over next 4 CH; work 1 SC into next 8 CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
Form the shape four and sew the two ends over each other.
Number Five:
Note – this number is worked from the bottom up, ending with the top.
With yarn – CH 23.
Work 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook;
work 1 SC into next 2 CH; work 2 SC in next CH;
work 1 SC into next CH; work 2 SC in next CH;
work 1 SC into next CH; work 2 SC in next CH;
work 1 SC into next 2 CH;
SC4tog over next 4 CH; work 1 SC into next CH;
SC4tog over next 4 CH; work 1 SC into each of next 3 CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
Number Six/Nine:
With yarn – CH 12; SL ST to form ring;
Work 1 SC in each of next 12 CH (12 SC); SL ST in first SC;
CH 6, work 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook;
work 1 SC into next 3 CH;
work 2 SC in next CH; SL ST in 3rd SC of ring.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
Number Seven:
With yarn – CH 17.
Work 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook;
Work 1 SC into each of next 4 CH;
SC4tog over next 4 CH; work 1 SC in each CH until end.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
Number Eight:
With yarn – CH 24.
Work 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook;
SC2tog over next 2 CH; SC2tog over next 2 CH; SC2tog over next 2 CH;
work 1 SC into next CH;
SC2tog over next 2 CH; SC2tog over next 2 CH; SC2tog over next 2 CH;
work 3 SC into next CH;
work 2 SC in next CH; work 2 SC in next CH; work 2 SC in next CH;
work 1 SC into next CH;
work 2 SC in next CH; work 2 SC in next CH; work 2 SC in next CH;
work 1 SC into last CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
Sew loose sides together to form the shape of an eight.
Optional – Little Flower Applique:
With yarn CH 4 /or make a magic ring;
RND 1: CH 2 (does not count as stitch); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked.
Change yarn – join new yarn into any DC.
RND 2: CH 1; work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 1 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into DC; SKIP next DC.
*Work [1 SC; 1 HDC; 1 DC; 1 HDC; 1 SC] into next DC; SKIP next DC.**
Repeat from * to ** four more times; SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing or weave in ends.
