Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Special Stitches:
How to Work 3 Double Crochet Together (3DCtog):
- Work 3 double crochet into space or single ST, holding the last loop of each double crochet on the hook.
- Yarn over and pull the yarn through all four loops on the hook.
HDC Starting Popcorn:
- CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC); work 4 half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the same stitch.
- Drop the loop from your hook.
- Insert your hook from front to back under the 2nd CH of 2 CH.
- Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the chain.
5 HDC Popcorn:
- Work 5 half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the same stitch.
- Drop the loop from your hook.
- Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first half double crochet of the group.
- Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.
How to Work Crochet Popcorn Stitch:
Starting Popcorn:
- CH 3 – this counts as your FIRST DC.
- Work 4 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
- Drop the loop from your hook.
- Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
- Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.
Popcorn:
- Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
- Drop the loop from your hook.
- Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
- Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

How to Work Front-Post Double-Crochet (FPDC):
- Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row/round below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches.
- The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the stitch that you’re working around.
- Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
- You now have 3 loops on the hook.
- Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook, twice.
- One front post double crochet (FPDC) is complete.

How to Work Front-Post Half Double-Crochet (FPHDC):
- Yarn over and insert your hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second stitch of the row/round below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the second and third stitches or according to the instructions in the pattern.
- The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the stitch that you’re working around.
- Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch.
- You now have 3 loops on the hook.
- Yarn over and draw the yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.
- One front post half double crochet (FPHDC) is complete.
Instructions:
NB: Please do note – these flowers are NOT worked up the same as the flowers used in the border.
Square Design One: Make 2
Small Flower – Make 8 for each square (16)
With A and 3, 50 mm (E) – make a magic circle / or CH 6 and SL ST into first CH from hook.
RND 1: CH 2 (does not count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked.
(12 DC) Fasten off and weave in ends.
With D – join into any DC.
RND 2: *[CH 2; work 3DCtog (special stitches) into DC; CH 2] SL ST into next DC; SL ST into next DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 5 more times; SL ST into first DC (start of first petal).
(6 Petals) Fasten off and weave in ends.
Square:
With A and 3, 50 mm (E) – make a magic circle / or CH 6 and SL ST into first CH worked.
RND 1: CH 2 (does not count as a ST); work 12 DC into ring; SL ST into first DC worked.
(12 DC) Fasten off and weave in ends.
With B – join into any DC.
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 FPDC around SAME DC. *Work 1 DC into next DC; work 1 FPDC around SAME DC. ** Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(24 STS = 12 DC; 12 FPDC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With C – join into any DC (not FPDC)
RND 3: Work Starting Popcorn (special stitches); CH 2; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC; CH 2.
*Work Popcorn (special stitches) into next DC; CH 2; work 1 FPDC around next FPDC; CH 2. **
Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; SL ST into top of starting popcorn.
(12 Popcorn; 12 FPDC; 24 x 2 CH)
For next round the previous round CH 2 spaces are SKIPPED.
Helpful Tip: If you have a tight tension – work loosely or use a larger hook (one size up)
RND 4: SL ST into next FPDC; CH 1; work 1 SC into SAME FPDC. *Work 1 FPSC around next Popcorn; work 1 SC into next FPDC. ** Repeat from * to ** 10 more times; work 1 FPSC around next Popcorn; SL ST into first SC. (24 SC)
Note for next round: The SL ST is worked into the top of the 3DCtog stitch.
RND 5: CH 1; work 1 SC into SAME SC; CH 1; SL ST into a Flower Petal; CH 4; SL ST into next Flower Petal; CH 1; SKIP next 2 SC. *Work 1 SC into next SC; CH 1; SL ST into a Flower Petal; CH 4; SL ST into next Flower Petal; CH 1; SKIP next 2 SC. ** Repeat from * to ** 6 more times; SL ST into first SC. (16 SC; 8 x 4 CH spaces; 16 SL STS – 2 in each Flower)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Note for next round: The FIRST SC is worked into the top of a 3DCtog stitch, and the FIRST of the four petals NOT attached to RND 5.
With E – join into Flower Petal (see Note) with a SC.
RND 6: #*CH 4; work 1 SC into next Petal. ** Repeat from * to ** 2 more times;
work 1 SC into next Petal (this is the next Flower). ## Repeat from # to ## 7 more times; SL ST into FIRST SC worked. (24 x 4 CH spaces; 32 SC)
RND 7: SL ST into next 4 CH space; CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 2 DC into same space; CH 1; work [3 TR; 3 CH; 3 TR] into next 4 CH space; CH 1; work 3 DC into next 4 CH space; CH 5; SKIP next 4 CH space; work 1 SC into next 4 CH space; CH 5; SKIP next 4 CH space.
*Work 3 DC into next 4 CH space; CH 1; work [3 TR; 3 CH; 3 TR] into next 4 CH space; CH 1; work 3 DC into next 4 CH space; CH 5; SKIP next 4 CH space; work 1 SC into next 4 CH space; CH 5; SKIP next 4 CH space. ** Repeat from * to ** 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 8: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into each of next 2 DC; work 1 DC into next 1 CH space; work 1 DC into each of next 3 TR; work [2 DC; 3 CH; 2 DC] into next 3 CH corner space;
work 1 DC into each of next 3 TR; work 1 DC into next 1 CH space; work 1 DC into each of next 3 DC; CH 6; SKIP next 5 CH space; work 1 SC into next SC; CH 6; SKIP next 5 CH space.

RND 9: Work [Starting HDC Popcorn (special stitches); 3 CH; HDC Popcorn (special stitches)] in corner space; CH 1; work 1 HDC into each of next 9 DC; work 1 HDC into each CH of next 6 CH spaces; work 1 HDC into next SC; work 1 HDC into each CH of next 6 CH spaces; work 1 HDC into each of next 9 DC; CH 1.
