Puff Flower Granny Crochet Square

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

SL ST – slip stitch

SPECIAL STITCH – 5 DC CLUSTER:
Step 1: YARN OVER HOOK
Step 2: Insert hook into stitch to be worked, YARN OVER HOOK and draw through.
Step 3: YARN OVER HOOK and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook).
Step 4: YARN OVER HOOK
Step 5: Insert hook into stitch to be worked, YARN OVER HOOK and draw through.
Step 6: YARN OVER HOOK and draw through 2 loops on hook (3 loops remain on hook).
Step 7: YARN OVER HOOK
Step 8: Insert hook into stitch to be worked, YARN OVER HOOK and draw through.
Step 9: YARN OVER HOOK and draw through 2 loops on hook (4 loops remain on hook).
Step 10: YARN OVER HOOK
Step 11: Insert hook into stitch to be worked,YARN OVER HOOK and draw through.
Step 12: YARN OVER HOOK and draw through 2 loops on hook (5 loops remain on hook).
Step 13: YARN OVER HOOK
Step 14: Insert hook into stitch to be worked, YARN OVER HOOK and draw through.
Step 15: YARN OVER HOOK and draw through 2 loops on hook (6 loops remain on hook).

Step 17: CH 1 to secure.

INSTRUCTIONS:

FOUNDATION RING:
Work 6 CH and join with a SL ST to form a ring

RND 1: CH 3(counts as DC), work 15 DC into ring (16 DC);
join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH

RND 2: CH 3(counts as DC), work 1 DC into same ST;
work 2 DC into each DC all around (32 DC); join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 3: Join new color into and DC.
CH 3(counts as DC), work 1 5 DC CLUSTER into next DC;
[work 1 DC into next DC, work 5 DC CLUSTER into next DC] repeat 15 times, join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH (16 CLUSTER STS, 16 DC)

RND 4: CH 1, work 1 SC into same ST (first DC – the 3 CH of rnd 3);
*CH 2, SKIP PC, work 1 SC into next DC. Repeat from * 14 more times;
CH 2, join with a SL ST  into first SC. (16 x 2 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 5: Join new color into any 2 CH space.
CH 3(counts as DC), work 2 DC into 2 CH space;
*[CH 1, work 3 DC] into next 2 CH space. Repeat from * 14 more times;
CH 1, SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. (16 1 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 6: Join new color into any 1 CH space.
CH 3(counts as DC), work [2 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC] into same CH space (corner made);
*[CH 1, work 3 DC into each CH space] x 3, CH 1, work [3 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC] into next 1 CH space. Repeat from * 2 more times;
[CH 1, work 3 DC into each CH space] x 3, CH 1, join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 7:  SL ST into next 2 DC, SL ST into 3 CH space.
CH 3(counts as DC), work [2 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC] into same CH space (corner made);
*[CH 1, work 3 DC into each CH space] x 4, CH 1, work [3 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC] into next 1 CH space. Repeat from * 2 more times;
[CH 1, work 3 DC into each CH space] x 4, CH 1, join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 8: Join new color into any corner space
CH 3(counts as DC), work [2 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC] into same CH space (corner made);
*[CH 1, work 3 DC into each CH space] x 5, CH 1, work [3 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC] into next 1 CH space. Repeat from * 2 more times;
[CH 1, work 3 DC into each CH space] x 5, CH 1, join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 9: Join new color into any corner space
CH 3(counts as DC), work [2 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC] into same CH space (corner made);
*[CH 1, work 3 DC into each CH space] x 6, CH 1, work [3 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC] into next 1 CH space. Repeat from * 2 more times;
[CH 1, work 3 DC into each CH space] x 6, CH 1, join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 10: CH 1, work 1 SC into same ST;
work 1 SC into each DC and 1 CH space of previous round, and 3 SC into each corner space.
Fasten off and weave in ends
