Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.
You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

- Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light. - Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
- Scissors

Size:
Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)
Special Stitches:
BEG CL: Make 3 CH, then yarn over insert hook into the ring;
yarn over over and pull thru;
yarn over and pull thru first 2 loops ( 2 loops left on hook); yarn over hook; insert hook into ring;
yarn over and pull thru;
yarn over and pull thru first 2 loops (3 loops on hook left); yarn over and pull thru all 3 loops; insert hook into ring; yarn over and pull thru;
yarn over and pull thru first 2 loops (4 loops on hook left); yarn over and pull thru all 4 loops.
CL: Work 4DCtog (work 4 double crochet together)
COLORS: A – aran; B – blue; C – grey; D – pink
INSTRUCTIONS:
TIP: Read the NOTES given at the start of a Round! This square can be very challenging if you are a beginner. Take it slow, read the instructions and look at the photos!
With D
FOUNDATION RING:
CH 6; join with a SL ST into the first CH to form a ring.
RND 1: CH 4 (counts as 1 DC AND 1 CH); work [1 DC; 1 CH] into ring 11 times.
SL ST into 3rd CH of 4 CH. Fasten off and weave in ends.
(12 DC and 12 x 1 CH spaces)

Join A into any 1 CH space.
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 2 DC into SAME space; CH 1;
[work 3 DC into NEXT 1 CH space; CH 1] x 11. SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
(12 x 3 DC groups and 12 x 1 CH spaces)

Join B into any 1 CH space.
NOTE: remember this is a 4DCtog CLUSTER and NOT a 3DCtog CLUSTER!
RND 3: Work BEG CL into 1 CH space; CH 2; SKIP NEXT DC; work 1 DC into next DC; SKIP NEXT DC; CH 2;
*work CL into NEXT 1 CH space; CH 2; SKIP NEXT DC; work 1 DC into next DC; SKIP NEXT DC; CH 2.
Repeat from * all around. SL ST into the top of the BEG CL.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
(12 x CL; 12 x 1 DC; 24 x 2 CH spaces)

work 3 DC into NEXT ST; CH 3; SKIP 4 STS;
work 3 HDC into NEXT ST; CH 3; SKIP 5 STS.
Repeat from * 3 more times. SL ST into first SC made.

Join B into any 2 CH corner space.

NOTE: OPTIONAL – I had to work HDC and not DC for my 10th round to keep it the same size!!
But depending on YOUR tension; yarn and hook – work round 10 in either DC or HDC.
RND 10: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same 2 CH space; work 1 DC into each DC and 1 CH space of previous round until next 2 CH corner space;
[Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into 2 CH corner space;
work 1 DC into each DC and 1 CH space of previous round until next 2 CH corner space.] x 3;
SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
RND 11: CH 1 (please note this does not count as a ST); work 1 SC into each DC of previous round – work 3 SC into each corner; SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Final Stitch Count = 35 SC on each side PLUS 3 SC in each corner

Hi 🙂 thank you – you can absolutely change round 6 to suit you. Rnd 5 and Rnd 6 the way they are worked just is part of the design element. These blocks were designed to challenge a bit! But thank you so much for your feedback!
Round 5 makes everything square, so round 6 doesn’t have to be that complicated.
3dc, ch3, 3 dc in the corners, skip to 2nd ch2, 3 dc. 3 dc in next sc. 3 dc in next ch2. Chaining 1 in between all 3 dc…except in the corners (chain 3 between those).
I would post a pic if I could, but I can’t.
