Materials
- Hook – 4, 00 mm (G)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Yarn:
Elle Family Knit (50 grams/150 meters/164 yards)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
Colors: Only 5 colors are used for each square – color change indicted in pattern.
- A – sunshine (yellow)
- B – watermelon (light pink)
- C – lilac (light purple)
- D – olive (dark green)
- E – fig (dark purple)
- F – lime (light green)
- G – Rose (dark pink)
Size: 4 & 1/2 inches

Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side
SPECIAL STITCHES:
BPDC – back post double crochet
- Step 1: yarn over on hook.
- Step 2: Insert hook into hole next to the post of the next stitch, on the “hook side” from back to front
- Step 3: Bring the hook back to the back of the fabric around the post, to the hole farther from the hook.
- Step 4: yarn over and draw through a loop, bringing it through both sides of the fabric. (3 loops remaining on hook)
- Step 5: yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook. (2 loops remaining on hook)
- Step 6: yarn over and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook.
4DC Cluster
Yarn over, insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, draw the yarn through the stitch, yarn over, and draw the yarn through 2 loops on the hook
Repeat the preceding step three times.
Yarn over and draw the yarn through all 5 loops on the hook
INSTRUCTIONS
THE JOINING:
With color A – I used a simple SC joining – working ONLY into the back loops of each DC.
NOTE: I did NOT work into the CLUSTERS.
I joined straight thru – meaning I joined 10 squares in one sitting. First, I joined horizontally – then vertically.




THE BORDER:
Note: Read Instructions first.
With color A
RND 1: Starting at the very FIRST DC of any side (the DC just after a corner CLUSTER);
work 1 SC into starting DC; work 1 SC into next DC; work 1 HDC into next 3 DC;
work 1 DC into next 2 DC; work 1 TR into next 3 DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC;
work 1 HDC into next 3 DC; work 1 SC into next 2 SC.
This sequence is worked over the 17 STS of a single square.
*SKIP the CLUSTER; work 2 SL ST’s into the JOIN (one on either side)
**work 1 SC into next 2 DC; work 1 HDC into next 3 DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC;
work 1 TR into next 3 DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; work 1 HDC into next 3 DC;
work 1 SC into next 2 SC. Repeat from * until next corner reached; CH 4 for the corner.
Starting again at the next FIRST DC of the next side repeat from **.
Join with a SL ST into FIRST SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With color E join yarn into ANY 4 CH corner loop.
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 5 DC into 4 CH loop; *work 1 SC into NEXT 7 STS; work 1 HDC into next 3 STS (you will note this is worked into the TR sts of the previous round); work 1 SC into NEXT 7 STS; work 1 SL ST into one of the SL ST’s worked int the join of the previous round. Repeat from * until next 4 CH corner loop; work 6 DC into 4 CH corner loop.**
Repeat from * to ** 3 more times; omitting the instructions for the last corner; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With color B join yarn into the FIRST DC of a corner 6 DC group.
RND 3: Work 1 SC into first DC; work 1 SC into next DC; work [1 HDC; 1 DC] into next DC; work [1 DC; 1 HDC] into next DC; work 1 SC into next 2 DC;
*work 1 SC into NEXT 7 STS; work [1 SC; 1 HDC] into next HDC; work 2 DC into next HDC; work [1 HDC; 1 SC] into next HDC; work 1 SC into NEXT 7 STS.SKIP THE SL ST.
Repeat from * until next corner;
work 1 SC into next 2 DC; work [1 HDC; 1 DC] into next DC; work [1 DC; 1 HDC] into next DC; work 1 SC into next 2 DC. **
Repeat from * to ** 3 more times. Omitting last corner instructions; join with a SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
