Striped Knot Crochet Square

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations:  US Terminology

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Size:
Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)

Colors:
Approx. – 104 – 120 yards (95 – 110 m) for complete square

INSTRUCTIONS:

Foundation Chain:
CH 29
ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each CH until end (28 SC),
change to new color on last ST, TURN.

ROW 2: CH 1, work 1 SC into next SC, *work 1 DC into next ST, work 1 SC into next ST. Repeat from * to last ST, work 1 SC into last ST, change to new color on last ST, TURN.

ROW 3: CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST until end, change to new color on last ST, TURN.

ROW 4: CH 1, work 1 SC into next 2 STS, *work 1 DC into next ST, work 1 SC into next ST. Repeat from * to last 2 STS, work 1 SC into last 2 STS, change to new color on last ST, TURN.

ROW 5: CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST until end, change to new color on last ST, TURN.

NOTE: ROW 2 & 4 are a basic alternate SC and DC across – just keep note to ALWAYS start and end with an SC – on row 4 start AND end with 1 SC into 2 STS.

Repeat ROWS 2-5 in striped sequence until there are 29 ROWS, ending with a ROW 5.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join new color with a SL ST into any SC on Foundation row.

RND 1: CH 1, work 1 SC into each SC and into each ROW along the edges – working 3 SC into each CORNER ST, until end of ROUND, join with a SL ST into first SC worked.

RND 2: CH 1, work 1 SC into each SC of previous round and 3 SC into center ST of 3 SC at each corner until end of round, join with a SL ST into first SC worked
Fasten off and weave in ends.
