Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.
You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

- Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light. - Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
- Scissors
- Yarn needle

Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)
Special Stitches:
DC2tog: work 2 DC stitches together (decrease)
The FIRST DC2tog of a ROUND:
SC in JOINING ST, CH 1 (shortened FIRST-DC made);
yarn over; insert hook into next st;
yarn over; draw up a loop;
(yarn over; draw thru 2 loops on hook) TWICE.
COLORS: A – aran; B – blue; C – grey; D – pink
INSTRUCTIONS:
With color C
CH 6; SL ST into first CH to form a ring
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into ring (12 SC); SL ST into first SC worked.
NOTE: the instructions for RND 2 say corners – but this is NOT the corners for the square itself – it is just to make the instructions easier to understand.
RND 2: *CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 4 DC into SAME SC;
CH 3 (first corner made); SKIP 2 SC;
*work 5 DC into next SC; CH 3 (next corner made); SKIP 2 SC.
Repeat from * 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(4 x 3 CH corner spaces; 20 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join color D into the FIRST DC of any 5 DC group
RND 3: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into NEXT DC; work 5 DC into NEXT DC (this is the CENTER DC of the 5 DC group); work 1 DC into NEXT 2 DC; CH 3.
*Work 1 DC into NEXT 2 DC; work 5 DC into NEXT DC; work 1 DC into next 2 DC; CH 3.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(4 x 3 CH spaces; 36 DC = 4 x 9 DC groups)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join color A into the FIRST DC of any 9 DC group.
RND 4: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into NEXT 3 DC; work 5 DC into NEXT DC (this is the CENTER DC of the 9 DC group); work 1 DC into NEXT 4 DC; CH 3.
*Work 1 DC into NEXT 4 DC; work 5 DC into NEXT DC; work 1 DC into next 4 DC; CH 3.
Repeat from * 2 more times. SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
(4 x 3 CH spaces; 52 DC = 4 x 13 DC groups)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join color B into the FIRST DC of any 8 DC group
RND 5: FIRST DC2tog (see special stitches); work 1 DC into NEXT 3 DC; DC2tog; CH 5;
DC2tog; work 1 DC into next 3 DC; DC2tog; CH 5.
*DC2tog; work 1 DC into NEXT 3 DC; DC2tog; CH 5;

Repeat from * 2 more times; join with a SL ST into top of FIRST DC2tog.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 6: FIRST DC2tog (see special stitches); work 1 DC into NEXT DC; DC2tog; CH 3; work 1 DC into 5 CH space; CH 3; work 1 DC into 5 CH space; CH 3; DC2tog; work 1 DC into next DC; DC2tog; CH 3; work 1 DC into 5 CH space; CH 3.

Join C into any 2 CH corner space OR ANY DC
RND 10: CH 1 (please note this does not count as a ST); work 1 SC into each DC of previous round – work 3 SC into each corner; SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Final Stitch Count = 35 SC on each side PLUS 3 SC in each corner
