Variety of stitches, simple shaping and finishing. Concentration required for neat finishing.

SIZE:
30 cm x 30 cm

MATERIALS:
Yarns:
Double knitting/light worsted yarn
50 grams of cream or white, dark pink, light blue
Small amounts of dark green, light green, brown and pink
Very small amount of black for embroidery

My Yarn:

This is only a suggestion and you can use any yarn and hook – you will just have ensure your blocks are the same size.
Here is the details of my yarn if you would like to look for a substitute:

Name – Pullskein
Brand- Elle

Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3 : Light
Meterage – 330 yards (300 meters)
Unit weight – 100 grams (3.53 ounces)
Gauge – 22.0 sts = 4 inches
Hook size – 4mm (G) – 4.5mm

Fibers – 100% Manufactured Fibers – Acrylic
Texture – plied

Hooks & Notions:
Size 3.50mm Hook
Size 4.00mm Hook
Yarn Needle
1x Small Heart Button (or button of own choice)
Small amount of Fiberfill/Toy Stuffing
approx 10cm=1cm pink ribbon

GAUGE:
22sts x 30 rows = 10 x 10cm
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect

I use US Crochet stitch terminology

INSTRUCTIONS

Square Block:
With blue yarn and 3.50mm hook
CH 41
Row 1: Work 1SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1SC into each CH until end (40 SC), turn
Row 2: CH1, work 1SC into each SC from previous row, turn (40 SC)
Repeat row 2 until 50 rows worked

Approx size of block: 23 cm x 23 cm

Snail Appliqué:
Heart Shell:
With white yarn an 3,5mm hook make a magic ring
Rnd 1: CH3, work 4DC into ring, work 1TR into ring, work 1DTR (double treble) into ring, work 1TR into ring, work 5DC into ring, pull tail to close ring
Rnd 2: SL ST into top of 3CH, CH2
work 1SC into next DC, work 10DC into next DC, work 1SC into next 3DC, work 1SC into TR, work 3SC into DTR, work 1SC into TR, work 1SC into next 3DC, work 10DC into next DC, work 1SC into next DC
Rnd 3: SL ST into top of 2CH, work 1SC into next 16 STS, work 2SC into next ST, work 1SC into next 16 STS
Rnd 4: SL ST into each ST. FO and leave a tail for sewing

Make another Heart Shell in dark pink yarn and a 4,00mm hook

Whip stitch the small white heart on top of the dark pink heart. stuff with with small amount of fiberfill/toystuffing before closing. Sew small heart button in the middle of the white heart. Weave in all ends.

Body:
With light green yarn an 3,5mm hook CH25
Row 1: Work 1DC into 3rd CH from hook, work 1DC into next 9STS, DC3tog into next ST, work 1DC into next 10 STS, turn
Row 2: CH1, work 1SC into next 9 DC, SC3tog, work 1SC into next 8 DC, work 1SC into top of 3CH
Rnd 3: DO NOT TURN, CH3 (counts as 1DC), work 9DC over 3CH of Row 2, continue working into CH STS, work 1SC into next 10 STS, work 3SC into next ST, work 1SC into next 11 STS, continue working in the round, work 2SC into row, work 1SC into next 8 STS, SC3tog, work 1SC into next 7 STS, work 2SC over 3CH, work 1HDC into next 2DC, work 2DC into next 3 DC, work 1HDC into next 2DC, work 1SC into next 2 DC, SL ST into  next DC. FO and leave a tail for sewing.

Sew body onto block as shown in the photos. Sew heart shell on top of body.

Eyes: (make 2)
With cream/white yarn and 3.50mm hook
make a Magic Ring
Work into magic ring as follows:
Rnd 1: CH3 (counts as 1DC), 11DC, SL ST into top of 3CH (12DC) – pull on tail to close ring
FO (leave a tail for sewing), weave in short tail.

Eyelids: (make 2)
With light blue yarn and 3.50mm hook
make a Magic Ring
Work into magic ring as follows:
Rnd 1: CH3 (counts as 1DC), 7DC (8DC) – pull on tail to close ring
FO (leave a tail for sewing), weave in short tail.

How to assemble Head:
Embroider a blank French knot in the middle of each eye. Sew eyes onto head and then sew eyelids over eyes.

Attach pink ribbon above head.

Tree Appliqué:
Tree Top: Note: Follow instructions carefully – need to know how to work front and back loops
With dark green yarn an 3,5mm hook CH21
Row 1: Work 1SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1SC into each ST (20SC)
Row 2: turn CH1, work 1SC into FRONTLOOPS ONLY
Row 3: turn CH1, work into BACKLOOPS ONLY, SC2tog twice, work 1SC into next 12 STS, SC2tog twice
Row 4: turn CH1 work into FRONTLOOPS ONLY, SC2tog twice, 1SC into  next 8 STS, SC2tog twice
Row 5: turn CH1, SC2tog 6 times. FO and leave a tail for sewing

join dark green yarn with a SL ST into the first loop on the 4th row
CH3, work 4DC into loop, SL ST into same loop
*SL ST, work 4DC, SL ST into next loop. Repeat from * into each loop until end. FO and weave in ends.

**join light green yarn with a SL ST into the first loop on the 3rd row
CH3, *work 4DC into first loop, SL ST into next loop, work 4DC into next loop. Repeat from * until end. FO and weave in ends.**

Repeat from ** to ** two times more, working dark green into 2nd row and light green into 1st row.

Weave in all ends, except tail for sewing.

Tree Bark:
With brown yarn an 3,5mm hook CH21
Row 1: Work 1SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1SC into each ST until end, (20SC) turn
Row 2: Work 1SC into each ST until end, (20SC) turn
Row 3: Work 1SC into next 15 SC, work 1HDC into next 2SC, work 1DC into next 3SC. FO and leave a tail for sewing.

Whip stitch tree bark onto the right side of block near the edge. Sew tree top right above the bark near the edge. Use photos as guide.

Small Heart:
With pink yarn and 3.50mm hook
make a Magic Ring
Work into magic ring as follows:
CH1, work 2SC, work 2HDC, work 2DC work 2TR, SL ST, work 2TR, work 2DC, work 2HDC, work 2SC, SL ST into 1st SC. FO, leave a tail for sewing- pull on short tail to close ring, weave in.

Sew small heart onto block as shown in photos.

Block Border:
With white/cream yarn and 3.50mm hook
start in a corner.
Work up 40SC over top and bottom row,
50SC down each side (1SC into each row)
SL ST into first SC
Rnd 2: CH3, work 3DC into same ST, CH2, skip 4 STS, work 3DC into next ST. *CH2, skip 4 STS, work 3DC into next ST. Repeat from * all around, working 3DC, CH2, 3DC into each corner. Ending with a 3DC, 2CH into same space as first 3DC. FO and weave in ends
Rnd 3: with light blue yarn, into corner: CH3, 2DC, CH2, 3DC
continue : CH1, work 3DC into each 2CH space of previous round, working (3DC,CH2,3DC) into each corner. SL ST into top 3CH. FO and weave in ends.
Rnd 4: with dark pink, into corner: CH3, 2DC, CH2, 3DC
continue: work 1DC into each DC and 1CH space of previous round, working (3DC,CH2,3DC) into each corner. SL ST into top 3CH. FO and weave in ends.

  2. Hi Joanita, I’m making this square and I noticed that in the heart shell you say : 3 ch, 5DC, 1 TR, 1DTR, 5DC. I think a 1DTR is missed, isn’t it?
    Excuse me if I’m wrong I don’t understand this part very well.
