My Crochet Pirate Playbook Part Seven

PATTERN SUPPORT

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)

Instructions:

The Doll (Pirate)

Finished size for doll – approx. 14 cm in length.

Yarns: scraps of double knitting/light worsted yarn in cream/white and yellow (or any color for the hair) (from 2 yards to 50 yards); scraps of double knitting/light worsted yarn in blue, pink and purple (or any color for the dress) (from 2 yards to 50 yards); small amount of embroidery yarn for eyes and mouth (I used blue & pink).

  • Size 3.50 mm Hook
  • Yarn Needle
  • Stitch Marker
  • Needle and Thread

PROJECT NOTES:

The clothes use very small amounts of yarn which makes the possibility to make many in various colors possible. Great way to use scraps of yarn!

Doll:

With yarn, make a magic ring. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds.

Rnd 1: Work 6 SC into ring.
Rnd 2: Work 2 SC into each SC (12 SC)
Rnd 3: Work 2 SC into first SC, work 1 SC into next SC. *Work 2 SC into next SC, work 1 SC into next SC. ** Repeat from * to ** until end of round. (18 SC)
Rnd 4: Work 2 SC into first SC, work 1 SC into next 2 SC. *Work 2 SC into next SC, work 1 SC into next 2 SC. ** Repeat from *to ** until end of round (24 SC)
Neck & Body.
Row 5: Work 1 SC into next 3 STS, SL ST into next, TURN.
Row 6: CH1, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, SL ST into next, TURN.
Row 7: CH1, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, TURN.
Row 8: CH1, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, TURN.
Row 9: CH1, work 2 SC into next ST, work 1 SC, work 2 SC into last ST, TURN. (5 SC)
Row 10: CH1, work 2 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 3 SC, work 2 SC into last SC, TURN. (7 SC)
Row 11-17: CH1, work 1 SC into each SC, TURN. (7 SC) Fasten off on last row.
Arms & Legs Use photo as guide
Rejoin yarn at where arm or leg should be.
Row 1: CH1, work 1 SC into 3 STS, TURN. (3 SC)
Row 2 – 5: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST, TURN. (3 SC)
Row 6: SC3tog.
Fasten off and weave in all loose ends. 

  • To neaten doll and to make sewing the two pieces together easier, SL ST all around the two doll pieces.
  • Embroider two eyes and a mouth onto one piece.
  • Using the whip-stitch method, sew the two doll pieces together, using the outer loops of the SL ST stitches made all around the doll.
  • No stuffing necessary.

The Hair:

With hair color yarn, join with a SL ST into a front loop on the front of the head.

  • Work 4 SC into same loop, then work 4 SC into the back loop.
  • Keep working 4 SC into a front loop, then 4 SC into a back loop, continue until
    desired length is reached or use photo as guide.

This part is optional:

  • Cut approx. 26 x 26 cm lengths of yarn – depending on how many back loops you worked (2 lengths of yarn for every loop).
  • Thread two at a time into your yarn needle.
  • Inserting the needle around the SC worked in the back loop pull through just half of the yarn. Do this for each back loop.
  • Note: you can tie small knots in the hair to avoid the hair being pulled out.
  • Cut another piece of yarn or you can use a thin ribbon Insert needle into the neck from one side and pull the yarn/ribbon through.
  • Tie around hair and knot.
  • Trim hair if necessary.

The Clothes:

White T-Shirt

With yarn – CH 22.

Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 2 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into last 3 STS, TURN. (29 SC)
Row 2: CH1, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 6 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 7 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 6 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into last 3 STS, TURN. (37 SC)
Row 3: CH1, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, SKIP 8 STS, work 1 SC into next 13 STS, SKIP 8 STS, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, TURN. (21 SC)
Row 4: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST (21 SC), SL ST into first SC – continue working in the round.
Rnd 5: CH 3, work 1 DC into same ST. work 1 DC into each ST until last ST, work 2 DC into last ST.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Shorts:

With red yarn – CH 21

Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (20 SC) – continue working in the round.
Rnd 2: SL ST into 1st SC worked, CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (20 SC)

Shaping 1st Leg

Rnd 3: SL ST into 1st SC worked, CH1, work 1 SC into next 10 SC – continue working the round.
Rnd 4-5: SL ST into 1st SC worked, CH1, work 1 SC into each ST. (10 SC).
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Shaping 2nd Leg

Rejoin yarn into the first ST next to the 1st leg, work up 10 SC all around.

Rnd 2-3: SL ST into 1st SC worked, CH1, work 1 SC into each ST. (10 SC).
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Bandanna:

With red yarn – Make a magic ring/ or CH 4; SL ST into 4th CH from hook to form ring.

Make 2:

Rnd 1: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 5 DC into ring,
(6 DC) SL ST into top of 3 CH.
Rnd 2: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST,
work 2 DC into each ST (12 DC) SL ST into top of 3 CH.
Rnd 3: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST,
work 1 DC into next ST. *Work 2 DC into next ST,
work 1 DC into next ST. Repeat from * until end (18 DC);
SL ST into top of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends – leave a tail for sewing on the 2nd one.

Sew the two parts together leaving the bottom section open, when reaching the end

*CH 8, work 1 SC into 2nd CH from end, work 1 SC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next 3 STS. ** Repeat from * to ** once more.

Pirate Hat:

With blue/black yarn – CH 16

Make 2:

Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (15 SC), turn.
Row 2: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (15 SC), turn.
Row 3: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 11 STS, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 2 DC into last ST.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Sew the two pieces together leaving a gap of 11 STS on each side.
Rejoin yarn and the beginning of the gap and work up 22 SC in the round.
Work 5 continuous rounds of SC. (22 SC)
Press top part flat – work through both parts.

Work 1 SC into first ST, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 SL ST into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 SC into last ST. (11 STS) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Pirate Jacket:

With dark green yarn – CH 22

Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 2 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into last 3 STS, TURN. (29 SC)
Row 2: CH1, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 6 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 7 STS, work 3 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 6 STS, work 3 SC into next ST,
work 1 SC into last 3 STS, TURN. (37 SC)
Row 3: CH1, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, SKIP 8 STS,
work 1 SC into next 13 STS, SKIP 8 STS,
work 1 SC into next 4 STS, TURN. (21 SC)
Row 4: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST (21 SC), TURN.
Row 5: CH 3, work 1 DC into same ST.
work 1 DC into each ST until last ST, work 2 DC into last ST, TURN
Row 6-7: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into each ST until end, TURN.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Rejoin yarn into any ST at the arm hole – work up 12 SC.

Rnd 2: 1 SC into each SC. (12 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Repeat for another arm.

Embroider a white X on the hat and add some buttons to the jacket.
