My Crochet Dinosaur Playbook Part One

PATTERN SUPPORT

Abbreviations:  US Terminology

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side

Instructions:

The Page:

Size: approx. Size – 27 cm (length) x 33 cm (width)

Yarns: approx. 50 grams in dark green

Hooks & Notions:

  • Size 4.00 mm Hook
  • Yarn Needle

PROJECT NOTES:

The only thing important here is to make sure your pages are all the same size!
Optional – Make 4 pages and do each page on its own, then when assembling the book add a sheet of plastic in-between for extra sturdiness!

The Page Pattern: (Make Two)
The pages are worked double-sided – pages can be worked on their own page, then 4 are required.

CH 51
Row 1: Work 1SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each CH until end (50 SC), turn.
Row 2 – 49: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (50 SC), turn.
Fasten off after the last row and weave in ends.

I ONLY MADE TWO PAGES FOR THIS BOOK – THE ‘INSIDE’ BEING THE MOST
IMPORTANT PART. THERE IS A FRONT ‘COVER’ AND A ‘BACK’ PAGE.

 NOTE: if you prefer you can make 4 pages and do each section separate.
The 2 inside pages match each other and ‘form’ one ‘big’ page 🙂

PART ONE:

Yarns: -scraps of double knitting/light worsted yarn in assorted colors (from 2 yards to 50 yards) – dark brown, light green, white/cream, light blue and golden brown

Hooks & Notions:
-Size 3.50 mm Hook
-Yarn Needle
-Stitch Marker
– small amount of Fiberfill/Toy Stuffing
– 4 x 2 cm ribbon approx 10 cm in length
– 4 x round buttons
– a pair of sticky eyes (or any eyes you would like to use)
– Thread & Needle

INSTRUCTIONS:

Left Inside Page Appliques
Egg Nest:
With dark brown double knitting/light worsted yarn and 3,50 mm hook
CH 16
SPECIAL STITCHES: THE PUFF STITCH – Video Tutorial from the Crochet Guru
> Yarn over the hook.
>  Insert the hook into the stitch.
>  Pull the yarn through the stitch.
>  Bring the loop up to match the same height as the previous stitch. There should now be 3 loops on your hook.
> Yarn over the hook.
> Insert the hook into the same stitch.
>  Yarn over the hook.
>  Pull the yarn through the stitch.
> Bring the loop up to match the same height as the previous loop. There should now be 5 loops on your hook.
>  Yarn over the hook.
> Insert the hook into the same stitch.
>  Yarn over the hook.
>  Pull the yarn through the stitch.
> : Bring the loop up to match the same height as the previous loop. There should now be 7 loops on your hook.
>  Yarn over the hook.
>  Pull the yarn through all 7 loops on your hook.
Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end, (15 SC), TURN
Row 2: CH4 (counts as 1 DC and 1 CH). *SKIP 1 ST, make a Puff Stitch into next ST, CH 1. Repeat from * until last ST, work 1 DC into last ST (6 x puffs), TURN
 Row 3: CH1, work 1 SC into first ST, SKIP 1 CH space, work 1 DC into skipped SC of first row. *Work 1 SC into top of PUFF ST, SKIP 1 CH space, work 1 DC into skipped SC of first row. Repeat from * until end working a SC into last DC.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing, weave in all other ends.
Stuffed Egg:
With white/cream double knitting/light worsted yarn and 3,50 mm hook
Make a magic circle
Rnd 1: Work 12 SC into the ring, pull ring tail to close circle
Rnd 2: use a stitch marker to help keep track of the the start of your rounds – *Work 2 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next ST. Repeat from * until end of round (18 SC)
Rnd 3 – 5: Work 1 SC into each ST until end of round (18 SC)
Rnd 6: *SC2tog, work 1 SC into next ST. Repeat from until end of round (12 SC)
Rnd 7 – 8: Work 1 SC into each ST until end of round (12 SC) – stuff lightly with some fiberfill
Rnd 9: *SC2tog all around. (6 Sc)
Rnd 10: Work 1 SC into each ST until end of round.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Applique Eggs: (make 3)
With white/cream double knitting/light worsted yarn and 3,50 mm hook
CH 6
Rnd 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next ST, work 6 DC into last ST – continue along the bottom of the foundation 6 CH
work 1 DC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 SC into next ST. SL ST into first SC worked
Rnd 2: SL ST into next 3 STS, work 2 SC into next 6 DC, SL ST into next 4 STS.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing, weave in all other ends.
Jurassic Palm Tree:
The Bark:
With dark brown double knitting/light worsted yarn and 3,50 mm hook
CH 26
Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (25 SC), TURN
Row 2 – 3: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (25 SC), TURN
Row 4: Work 1 SC into next 15 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next 4 STS, work 1 TR into next 4 STS, TURN
Work 1 SL ST into each ST all around.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing, weave in all other ends.
The Leaves:
With light green double knitting/light worsted yarn and 3,50 mm hook
Make a magic ring
Loop 1: CH 11, work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (10 SC)
Loop 2: SL ST into ring, CH 11, work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (10 SC)
Loop 3: SL ST into ring, CH 9, work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (8 SC)
Loop 4: SL ST into ring, CH 7, work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (6 SC)
Loop 5: SL ST into ring, CH 7, work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (6 SC)
*SL ST into first SC of Loop 1:
Work 2 DC into same SC,
work 1 DC into next 4 STS,
work 1 SC into last 5 STS
continue down the other side of the loop:
work 1 SL ST into first ST
work 1 SC into next 3 STS,
work 1 DC into next 4 STS,
work 2 DC into last ST.
Repeat from * for Loop 2
SL ST into first SC of Loop 3:
Work 2 DC into same SC,
work 1 DC into next 3 STS,
work 1 SC into last 4 STS
continue down the other side of the loop:
work 1 SL ST into first ST
work 1 SC into next 3 STS,
work 1 DC into next 3 STS,
work 2 DC into last ST.
SL ST into first SC of Loop 4:
Work 2 DC into same SC,
work 1 DC into next 2 STS,
work 1 SC into last 3 STS
continue down the other side of the loop:
work 1 SL ST into first ST
work 1 SC into next 2 STS,
work 1 DC into next 3 STS,
work 2 DC into last ST.
Repeat from * for Loop 5
SL ST into next available ST.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing , weave in all other ends.
Building your page:
Using the tails of each applique, whipstitch each piece into place!

Place the tree bark on the left hand side of your page and stitch into position.

Overlay the leaves slightly over the top of the tree bark and stitch only the bottom part of each leaf to the page.

The leaves should be able to curl inward – this is to provide some interaction for the leaves 🙂

Stitch 2 eggs as shown in the photo – right to the tree (see big image at the end of this section)
Starting at the top of the nest as in photo – stitch side to page – then when stitching the bottom
part of the nest to the page – stitch 3/ 2 stitches into the same stitch onto the page.

This will cause the nest to form a bucket shape 🙂

Stitch the last egg just below and to the side of the nest.

Dinosaur – Stegosaurus
The Body: (make 2)
With light blue double knitting/light worsted yarn and 3,50 mm hook
Make a magic circle
Row 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 5 DC into ring (6 DC), TURN
Row 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST as 3 CH. Work 2 DC into each ST until end (12 DC), TURN
Row 3: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST as 3 CH, work 1 DC into next ST. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST. Repeat from * until end (18 DC), TURN
Row 4: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST as 3 CH, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. Repeat from * until end (24 DC), TURN
Row 5: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST as 3 CH, work 1 DC into next 3 STS. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 3 STS. Repeat from * until end (30 DC), TURN
Row 6: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST as 3 CH, work 1 DC into next 4 STS. *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 4 STS. Repeat from * until end (36 DC), DO NOT TURN
continue along the bottom of the half circle – work 2 SC into each row (24 SC)
Fasten off and leave a VERY LONG  tail for sewing on one of the body pieces – weave all other ends in.
The Fins:
With golden brown double knitting/light worsted yarn and 3,50 mm hook
FOR THIS WHOLE PART WORK INTO FRONT LOOPS ONLY!
Join yarn with a SL ST into 2nd ST from the Start of row 1 of the half circle.
SL ST into next 2 STS
Work 1 SC and 1 HDC into next ST,
work 1 DC and 1 TR into next ST,
work 1 TR and 1 DC into next ST
work 1 HDC and 1 SC into next ST
SL ST into next 4 STS
*Work 1 SC and 1 HDC into next ST,
work 1 DC and 1 TR into next ST,
work 1 TR and 1 DC into next ST
work 1 HDC and 1 SC into next ST
SL ST into next 4 STS

Repeat from * 2 more timesNote on the last fin – only SL ST into 2 STS to end!

The Head: (make 2)
With light blue double knitting/light worsted yarn and 3,50 mm hook
Make a magic circle
Rnd 1: CH3 (counts as 1 DC) work 11 DC into ring, SL ST into top of 3CH (12 DC)
Rnd 2: CH3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST as 3 CH, work 2 DC into each ST until end, SL ST into top of 3CH (24 DC)
Rnd 3: SC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 2 HDC into next ST, work 2 HDC into next ST, work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 SC into next ST (this forms the nose/front of the head)
SL ST into the remaining STS.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing on one of the head pieces, weave in all other ends.
The Tail: (make 2)
With light blue double knitting/light worsted yarn and 3,50 mm hook
CH 11
Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end (10 SC), TURN
Row 2: Work 1 SC into next 9 STS, SL ST into last ST (9 SC), TURN
Row 3: SL ST into first SC, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 DC into next 3 STS (8 STS), TURN
Row 4: Work 1 SC into next 3 STS, SC3tog, SKIP 1 ST, SL ST into next (4 STS), TURN
Row 5: SL ST into each ST until end – continue around the tail until you reach the tip, CH 3, SL ST into same ST as 3 CH, SL ST until end of tail.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing on one of the tail pieces, weave in all other ends.
Building your Dinosaur – Stegosaurus
Whip stitch the two pieces of the tail together leaving the bottom part open – stuff lightly with some fiberfill/toy stuffing. Weave in tail ends.
Put to one side.
Whip stitch the two pieces of the head together leaving just four stitches at the back open –
stuff lightly with some fiberfill/toy stuffing. Weave in tail ends.

Put to one side

Whip stitch the two body pieces together as shown in the photos – you will be working with the right sides facing towards you.
NOTE: DO NOT CUT YOUR BODY TAIL YARN THIS WILL BE USED TO ATTACH
TAIL AND HEAD 🙂
Attach your tail to the body – first along one side then along the other
Your body tail should be at the start again
Weave your body tail through underneath the dinosaur tail and continue working the body together.
When about 10 cm from end – stuff body lightly with some fiberfill/toy stuffing
TIP: Check below to see how I stuffed my dinosaur’s body – this is of course optional 🙂

I used a piece of cushion inner to put my stuffing in and then I placed this into my dinosaur 🙂
TIP: you can also add a bell or beans
Stitch the body together until you reach the last 5 stitches – attach your dinosaur head.

First one side – sew the 5th stitch, then the remaining 4 stitches on the other side.

Fasten off by closing the gap behind the head. Weave in ends 🙂

The Legs:

I used some scrap-booking ribbon – I cut 4 x  10 cm strips then melted (burnt) the edges together

with a flame – then with some thread I stitched each ‘leg’ into place on the bottom of the

dinosaur’s body – then I added a button to the top of each leg

(this was for decorative as well as to hide the stitches)

I then glued some sticky eyes to the head – this was at the request of my daughter 🙂
This little guy measures approx – 22cm in length from head to tail
