Alternative Granny Crochet Square

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Foundation Ring:
Make a 4 CH and join with a SL ST into the first CH to form a ring

RND 1:
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into rnd, CH 2. *Work 3 DC into ring, CH 2,. Repeat from * twice more, join with a SL ST into the top of first 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
RND 2: (Change Color)

Join yarn to any 2 CH corner space with a SL ST, CH 1, work (1 SC, 3 CH, 1 SC) into same space, *CH 3, work (1 SC, 3 CH, 1 SC) into next 2 CH space. Repeat from * twice more, CH 3, join with a SL ST into first SC
Fasten off and weave in ends.
RND 3: (Change Color)
Join yarn to any 3 CH corner space with a SL ST, CH 3, work (2 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC) into same space, CH 1, work 3 DC into next 3 CH space, CH 1, *work 3 DC, 3 CH, 3 DC) into next 3 CH space, CH 1, work 3 DC into next 3 CH space, CH 1. Repeat from * twice more, join with a SL ST into 3rd of CH 3
Fasten off and weave in ends.
RND 4: (Change Color)
Join yarn to any 3 CH corner space with a SL ST, CH 1, work (1 SC, 3 CH, 1 SC) into same space, CH 3, work 1 SC into next 1 CH space, CH 3, work 1 SC into next 1 CH space, CH 3. *work (1 SC, 3 CH, 1 SC) into next 3 CH space, CH 3, work 1 SC into next 1 CH space, CH 3, work 1 SC into next 1 CH space, CH 3 Repeat from * twice more, join with a SL ST into 3rd of CH 3
