Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Size:
Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)

Approx. – 104 – 120 yards (95 – 110 m) for complete square

INSTRUCTIONS:

FOUNDATION CHAIN:
Ch 4 and join with a SL ST to form a ring
RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 15 DC into ring, join with a SL ST to top of 3rd CH of 3 CH (16 DC)

RND 2: SL ST into space in-between 3 CH and next DC of previous round, CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same space. Work 2 DC into each space between DC of previous round (32 DC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 3: Join new color into any DC

CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same space, work 1 DC into next DC. *Work 2 DC into next DC, work 1 DC into next DC. Repeat from * until end of round. SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 4: Join new color into any DC
CH 4 (counts as 1 TR), work [2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC, 1 TR] into same space. *SKIP next 2 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, SKIP next 2 STS, work [1 TR, 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC, 1 TR] into next space. Repeat from * twice more.
SKIP next 2 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, SKIP next 2 STS, join with a SL ST into 4th CH of 4 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 5: Join new color into any 2 CH corner space.
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work [2 TR, CH 2, 2 TR, 1 DC] into same space. *Work 1 DC into each ST, work [1 DC, 2 TR, CH 2, 2 TR, 1 DC into next 2 CH corner space. Repeat from * twice more.
Work 1 DC into each ST, SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 6: Join new color into any 2 CH corner space.
CH 3 (counts as 1DC), , work [1 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into same space. *Work 1 DC into each ST, work [2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into next 2 CH corner space. Repeat from * twice more. Work 1 DC into each ST, SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 7: Join new color into any 2 CH corner space.
CH 3 (counts as 1DC), , work [1 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into same space. *Work 1 DC into each ST, work [2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into next 2 CH corner space. Repeat from * twice more. Work 1 DC into each ST, SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 8: Join new color into any 2 CH corner space.
CH 3 (counts as 1DC), , work [1 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into same space. *Work 1 DC into each ST, work [2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into next 2 CH corner space. Repeat from * twice more. Work 1 DC into each ST, SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 9: Join new color into any 2 CH corner space.
CH 1, work 3 SC into corner space, work 1 SC into each ST all around – work 3 SC into each 2 CH corner space. SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
