My Crochet Under The Sea Playbook Part Four

PATTERN SUPPORT

Abbreviations:  US Terminology

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Instructions:

Small Sea Star & Nautilus Shell: (Make 5 of each)

Make a magic circle
RND 1: CH 3(counts as 1 DC); work 9 DC into ring (10 DC)
RND 2: *CH 5, work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 HDC into the next CH; work 1 DC into the next CH; work 1 DC into the last CH; SKIP 1 ST; SL ST into the next ST.
Repeat from * 4 more times.
Fasten off and weave in ends
Make a magic circle
Work 6 SC into the ring – continue working in the round;
work 2 SC into the next 3 STS;
work 2 HDC into the next 3 STS;
[work 2 HDC into the next ST, work 1 DC into the next ST] x 2;
work 2 DC into the next ST;
work 1 TR into the next ST;
work 2 TR into the next ST;
work 1 TR into the next ST.
Fasten off and weave in ends
Sea Rock & Coral:

CH 26
Row 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each ST until end, turn (25 SC)
Row 2 – 26: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing

The Coral is worked randomly around the rock piece with pink and cream/white yarn. 
Join pink yarn into any front-loop of a ST with a SC, work 5 SC into same loop.
*Work 6 SC into next loop. Repeat for length of coral required.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Surface SL ST or Sew 9 compartments onto the rock – use photo as guide.

Sea Grass:
CH 29
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, work 1 HDC into next 5 STS, work 1 DC into next 5 STS, work 1 TR into next 5 STS, SKIP 3 STS and SL ST into next ST
CH 11
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC into next 3 STS, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 1 TR into next ST, SKIP 3 STS and SL ST into last ST
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing

Sea Turtle:
Body & Shell Top:
Make one for Body – Rnd 1 – 5
Make one for Shell – Rnd 1 – 4
Make a magic circle

RND 1: CH 3(counts as 1 DC); work 11 DC into ring (12 DC); SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3 CH
RND 2:CH 3(counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST; work 2 DC into each DC all around (24 DC); SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3 CH
RND 3:
CH 3(counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next ST; *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST. Repeat from * all around (36 DC); SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3 CHRND 4:CH 3(counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS; *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS. Repeat from * all around (48 DC); SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3 CH
Fasten off here for Shell Top, leave a tail for sewing – 
RND 5:CH 3(counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 3 STS; *Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 3 STS. Repeat from * all around (54 DC); SL ST into top of 3rd CH of 3 CH
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing

The Feet:
Special ST – DC3tog – double crochet 3 stitches together
[yarn over hook, insert hook into stitch;
yarn over hook and pull up a loop;
yarn over hook and pull through two loops] repeat 3 times
four loops on hook – yarn over hook pull though all loops.

First front foot:

Join yarn into 11th ST from last ST of the last round – use photo as guide.

Row 1: CH 3(counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into next 4 STS, TURN
Row 2: CH 3(counts as 1 DC), DC3tog, CH 3, SL ST into last ST.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

First back foot:

Join yarn into 7th ST from first front foot
repeat instructions for first foot

Second back foot:

Join yarn into 11th ST from first back foot
repeat instructions for first foot

Second front foot:

Join yarn into 7th ST from second back foot
repeat instructions for first foot

Head & Tail:
CH 32
Work 1 DC into 4th CH from hook;
work 1 DC into each CH st until end (30 DC)

Head: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 5 DC over last DC worked, CH 3 and SL ST into same space – use photo as guide.

working into the bottom of the DC row (foundation CH) SL ST into each ST until end

Tail: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2DCtog over the first 3 CH, CH 3 and SL ST into same space – use photo as guide.
SL ST into each DC until end of row.
Fasten off.

Weave the tail of the yarn into the stitches at the back of the head to close the gap between the head row and the DC row.

Whip-stitch top shell onto the bottom body part – use the stitches of row 4 from the body to guide the placement of the shell.
The shell will form a bubble.

Stop 10 Stitches from end – DO NOT CLOSE – LEAVE OPENING
using hook – SL ST into 4 STS, CH 4 (button loop), SKIP 2 STS, SL ST into remaining 4 STS.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Sew button into position just beneath the button loop onto the bottom body piece.
Building your page:
Using the tails of each applique, whip-stitch each piece into place!
Sew Rock & Coral piece into position – use photo as guide.

Sew Sea grass into position – use photo as guide.

Position the Sea Turtle into place and mark an opening for the Head & Tail. Whip-stitch Body into place. Flip feet up to work only the body onto the page.

Insert Head & Tail through the openings

 Pull tail to hide the Sea Turtle’s head 🙂

Use top shell pocket to keep playing pieces safe when not in play!
