This Alternative Stripes Crochet Square is part of the 2016 Crochet A Block Crochet Along.

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

Supplies/Materials:

• Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
  Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
• Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
• Scissors
• Yarn needle

SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Make a magic circle
RND 1: CH 1, work 8 SC into ring, SL ST into first SC

RND 2: CH 1, work 1 SC, 2 CH, 1 SC into first SC, work 1 SC into next SC;
*work [1 SC, 2 CH, 1 SC] into next SC, work 1 SC into next SC – repeat from * 2 more times
SL ST into first SC

RND 3: SL ST into corner space, CH 1, [work 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC] into first SC;
*CH 1, SKIP next ST, , work 1 SC into next ST, CH 1, SKIP next ST, work [1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC] into corner space. Repeat from * 3 more times, CH 1, SKIP next ST, work 1 SC into next ST, CH 1, SKIP next ST, SL ST into first SC.
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 4: Join new color in any corner space;
CH 1, [work 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC] into first SC;
*[CH 1, SKIP next ST, , work 1 SC into next ST] x 2,;
CH 1, SKIP next ST, work [1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC] into corner space.
