Bold Cluster Crochet Square

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

Supplies/Materials:

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Size:
Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)

Colors:
Approx. – 104 – 120 yards (95 – 110 m) for complete square

  • 098 Citrus x 2
  • 145 Camel x 2
  • 194 Cognac x 2

INSTRUCTIONS:

SPECIAL STITCH:
CL(cluster): Work 3 DC STS into the same ST, leaving the last loop of each ST on the hook each time, yarn over hook and pull through all 4 loops on your hook.

Make a magic circle
RND 1: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR);
*Work 5 DC into ring, work 1 TR into ring.
Repeat from * two more times;
work 5 DC into ring.
SL ST into 4th CH of 4 CH, changing color.

RND 2: CH 5 (counts as 1 DC and 2 CH); work 1 DC into same ST;
*[CH 1, SKIP 1 ST, work 1 CL into next ST] twice;
CH 1, SKIP next ST; [work 1 DC, 2 CH, 1 DC ] into corner TR;
Repeat from * two more times;
[CH 1, SKIP 1 ST, work 1 CL into next ST] twice; SL ST into 3rd CH of 5 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 3: join new color in any 2 CH space;
CH 1, *[work 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 SC] into 2 CH space;
[work 1 SC into next ST, work 1 DC over the next 1 CH space and into the corresponding ST from RND 1] x 3 , work 1 SC into next ST.
Repeat from * 3 more times, join with a SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 4: join new color in any corner HDC;
CH 1, *[work 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 SC] into HDC, work 1 SC into every ST to next HDC.
Repeat from * 3 more times, join with a SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 5: join new color into any corner HDC;
CH 5 (counts as 1 DC and 2 CH); work 1 DC into same ST;
*[CH 1, SKIP 1 ST, work 1 CL into next ST] five times;
CH 1, SKIP next ST; [work 1 DC, 2 CH, 1 DC ] into corner TR;
Repeat from * two more times;
[CH 1, SKIP 1 ST, work 1 CL into next ST] five times; SL ST into 3rd CH of 5 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 6: join new color in any 2 CH space;
CH 1, *[work 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 SC] into 2 CH space;
[work 1 SC into next ST, work 1 DC over the next 1 CH space and into the corresponding ST from RND 4] x 6, work 1 SC into next ST.
Repeat from * 3 more times, join with a SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 7: join new color in any corner HDC;
CH 1, *[work 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 SC] into HDC, work 1 SC into every ST to next HDC.
Repeat from * 3 more times, join with a SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 8: join new color in any corner HDC;
CH 5 (counts as 1 DC and 2 CH); work 1 DC into same ST;
work 1 DC into each ST until next HDC;
*work [1DC, 2 CH, 1 DC] into HDC, work 1 DC into each ST until next HDC.
Repeat from * two more times. SL ST into 3rd CH of 5 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 9: join new color in any corner 2 CH space
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); CH 2, work 1 DC into same ST;
work 1 DC into each ST until next 2 CH corner space;
*work [1DC, 2 CH, 1 DC] into corner,  work 1 DC into each ST until next corner.
Repeat from * two more times. SL ST into 3rd CH of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends

RND 10: repeat RND 9

RND 11: repeat RND 9 – BUT work 2 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC into each corner.
