Abbreviations:
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
SC2tog – work two single crochet together
SC3tog – work three single crochet together
SL ST – slip stitch
INSTRUCTIONS:
Attaching The Straps:
Position your straps the width of your top border at the sides – place one over the squares (front) and the other on the back side. Sew into position 🙂
Please note: if you have already lined your bag and it is all the way to the top – use thread yarn and needle to attach your straps!


Bag Button Straps: (this is completely optional – if preferred a zipper can be inserted)
Center 7 STS as shown in photo above – mark with pins or yarn.
Join yarn into the backloop of the first ST of your 7 STS on the top row of the back piece and work 7 SC across (this counts as Row 1);
Row 2-5: CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST (7 SC), TURN
Row 6: (BUTTON HOLE ROW) CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC), work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, SKIP 1 ST, work 1 HDC into last 3 STS, TURN
Row 7: SC2tog, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, SC2tog (5 SC), TURN
Row 8: CH 1, work 1 SC into each (5 SC), TURN
Row 9: SC2tog, work 1 SC into next ST, SC2tog (3 SC), TURN
Row 10: CH 1, work 1 SC into remaining 3 STS, TURN
Row 11: SC3tog
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Sew button to correspond with the button hole onto the front piece.
NOTE: If you have larger buttons like I used on the original Ester’s Tote – replace the SC with DC into Bag Button Straps instructions. – this creates a longer strap and bigger button hole 🙂
Bonus Owl Strap Pocket:
A little pocket that fastens around the strap.
With yarn make a magic ring;
Rnd 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 15 DC into ring (16 DC), SL ST into top of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Rnd 2: Join new color in-between any 2 DC;
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC) work 1 DC into same space;
Work 2 DC in-between each DC of round 1 (32 DC), SL ST into top of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Rnd 3: Join new color in-between any 2 DC;
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 2 DC into same space.
*SKIP 2 DC, work 3 DC in-between the next 2 DC. Repeat until end.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Rnd 4: Join new color into any DC.
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST; work 1 DC into next 2 STS.
[Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS] repeat 3 times;
work 1 HDC into next ST, work 1 SC into the remaining STS all around, except the last one, work 1 HDC into last ST. SL ST into top of 3 CH.
Rnd 5: CH 1, work 2 DC into next ST;
work 1 HDC into next; work 1 SC into next 9 STS, work 1 HDC into next;
work 2 DC into next; SL ST into next.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

I the back solid in color.

Starting in the 5th ST (see photo);
Join yarn and work 7 SC across (this counts as Row 1);
Row 2-5: CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST (7 SC), TURN
Row 6: (BUTTON HOLE ROW) CH 2 (counts as 1 HDC), work 1 HDC into next 2 STS, SKIP 1 ST, work 1 HDC into last 3 STS, TURN
Row 7: SC2tog, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, SC2tog (5 SC), TURN
Row 8: CH 1, work 1 SC into each (5 SC), TURN
Row 9: SC2tog, work 1 SC into next ST, SC2tog (3 SC), TURN
Row 10: CH 1, work 1 SC into remaining 3 STS, TURN
Row 11: SC3tog
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Sew two pocket pieces together leaving top open.
Attach a button to the back.
Optional:
Crochet a pair of eyes of use large buttons
EYES:
Make a magic ring:
Rnd 1: work 6 SC into ring;
Rnd 2: Work 2 SC into each SC of previous round;
Rnd 3: Work 2 SC into first SC, work 1 SC into next SC.
*Work 2 SC into next SC, work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around (18 SC)
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
