Four Petal Flower Crochet Square

Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).
Special stitches explained and links to tutorials are provided.

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)

RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)

INSTRUCTIONS:

FOUNDATION RING:
Make a magic ring

RND 1: CH 1,  work 3 SC into ring;
work [CH 3, 3 SC into ring] 3 more times;
CH 3, join with a SL ST into the first SC worked
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 2: Join new color into any 3CH space;
CH 1, [work 1 SC, 1 HDC, 3 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC] into each 3 CH space, join with a SL ST into first SC worked
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 3: Join new color between any 2 DC;
CH 1, work 1 SC into same space;
work [CH 5, 1 SC between next 2 DC] 3 more times;
CH 5, join with a SL ST into first SC worked

RND 4: SL ST into first 5 CH space, CH 3 (counts as 1 DC);
work [DC2tog, CH 2, DC3tog, CH 3, DC3tog, CH 2, DC3tog] into same 5 CH space;
*CH 2; work [DC3tog, CH 2, DC3tog, CH 3, DC3tog, CH 2, DC3tog] into next 5 CH space;
repeat from * twice more, join with a SL ST into top of first ‘cluster’
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 5: Join new color into any 3CH space;
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC);
work [1 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC] into same 3 CH space (corner);
*[CH 1, work 2 DC into next 2 CH space] 3 times;
CH 1; work [2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into next 3 CH space (corner);
repeat from * twice more;
[CH 1, work 2 DC into next 2 CH space] 3 times;
CH 1, join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3CH

RND 6: CH 3(counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into next DC;
work [2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into 2 CH corner space;
*work 1 DC into next 2 DC;
[CH1, work 1 DC into next 2 DC] x 3;
CH 1, work 1 DC into next 2 DC, work [2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC] into 2 CH corner space.
Repeat from * twice more
[CH1, work 1 DC into next 2 DC] x 3;
CH 1, SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 7: Join new color into any 2 CH space;
CH 1, work 1 SC, 2 CH, 1 SC into same space;
work 1 SC into each DC and 1 CH space all around and work [2 SC, 2 CH, 2 SC] into each corner 2 CH space. Join with a SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 8: Join new color into any 2 CH space;
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC, 2 CH, 1 DC into same 2 CH space (corner):
work 1 DC into each SC of previous round; work [2 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC] into each 2 CH corner space. Join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH

RND 9: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into next DC;
work [2 DC, 2 Ch, 2 DC] into next 2 CH corner space;
work 1 DC into each DC of previous round, work [2 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC] into each 2 CH corner space, join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends.

RND 10: Join new color into any 2 CH space;
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC, 2 CH, 1 DC into same 2 CH space (corner):
work 1 DC into each DC of previous round; work [2 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC] into each 2 CH corner space. Join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH

RND 11: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into each DC of previous round, work [2 DC, 2 CH, 2 DC] into each 2 CH corner space, join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH
Fasten off and weave in ends.
