Difficulty Level/Skill Required: Easy – Intermediate

Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing.
Includes more involved stitch combinations like the popcorn stitch.

You will need to know basic stitches like the DC (double crochet).

  • Yarn – Charity Double Knit Pullskein (100g / 255 yards / 233 meters)
    Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.
  • Hook – 4.00 mm (G) – Clover
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Size:
Square – 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23 cm)

Special Stitches:
BEG CL: Make 3 CH, then yarn over insert hook into the ring;
yarn over over and pull thru;
yarn over and pull thru first 2 loops ( 2 loops left on hook); yarn over hook; insert hook into ring;
yarn over and pull thru;
yarn over and pull thru first 2 loops (3 loops on hook left); yarn over and pull thru all 3 loops.

CL: Work 3DCtog (work 3 double crochet together)

COLORS: A – aran; B – blue; C – grey; D – pink

INSTRUCTIONS:

With A

FOUNDATION RING:
CH 6; join with a SL ST into the first CH to form a ring.

RND 1: Work BEG CL into ring;
CH 3; * work [CL into ring; CH 3]. Repeat from * 6 more times. Join with a SL ST into top of BEG CL.
(8 x Clusters and 8 x 3 CH spaces)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any 3 CH space.

RND 2: Work [BEG CL; 3 CH; CL] into same 3 Ch space; CH 1.
*Work [CL; 3 CH; CL] into next 3 CH space; CH 1. Repeat from * 6 more times. Join with a SL ST into top of BEG CL.
(8 x 2 pair CLUSTERS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any 3 CH space.

RND 3: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into same 3 CH space – first corner made.
CH 1; SKIP next 1 CH space and work 3 DC into next 3 CH space.
*CH 1; SKIP next 1 CH space; work [3 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into next 3 CH space; CH 1; SKIP next 1 CH space; work 3 DC into next 3 CH space.
Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 3 CH space.

RND 4: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into same 3 CH space – first corner made.
CH 1; work 1 DC into next 1 CH space; work 1 DC into the 1 CH space of RND 2; work 1 DC into 1 same 1 CH space as first DC.
CH 1; [work 1 DC into next 1 CH space; work 1 DC into the 1 CH space of RND 2; work 1 DC into 1 same 1 CH space as first DC];
*CH 1; work [3 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into next 3 CH corner space;
CH 1; work 1 DC into next 1 CH space; work 1 DC into the 1 CH space of RND 2; work 1 DC into 1 same 1 CH space as first DC.

*CH 1; work [3 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into next 3 CH space; [CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space] x 3.
Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join B into any 3 CH space.

RND 6: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into same 3 CH space – first corner made.
[CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space.] x 4
*CH 1; work [3 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into next 3 CH space; [CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space] x 4.
Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join C into any 3 CH space.

RND 7: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into same 3 CH space – first corner made.
[CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space.] x 5
*CH 1; work [3 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into next 3 CH space; [CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space] x 5.
Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join D into any 3 CH space.

RND 8: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [2 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into same 3 CH space – first corner made.
[CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space – working the 2nd DC into the center DC of RND 6 – see photos] x 6
*CH 1; work [3 DC; 3 CH; 3 DC] into next 3 CH space; [CH 1; work 3 DC into next 1 CH space – working the 2nd DC into the center DC of RND 6] x 6.
Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Join A into any 3 CH space.

RND 9: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into same 3 CH space – first corner made.
Work 1 DC into each DC and 1 CH space until next corner.
*Work [2 DC; 2 CH; 2 DC] into 3 CH corner space; work 1 DC into each DC and 1 CH space until next corner.
Repeat from * 2 more times. Join with a SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.

RND 10: CH 1; work 1 SC into each DC of previous round and work 3 SC into each 2 CH corner.
SL ST into first SC worked.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Final Stitch Count = 35 SC on each side PLUS 3 SC in each corner

 When blocked the Spiked Flower Granny Square should be approx 9 inches (23 cm).
