Wild Animal Finger Puppets – Free Crochet Pattern
Go on a safari or jungle exploring with these Wild Animal Finger Puppets!
SKILL LEVEL:
Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
Yarn: Approx 20/30 grams of light weight worsted yarn-
mixed (leftovers) – each puppet really takes a very small amount of yarn to complete!
Hook: 4.00 mm or use a different size! Remember puppet size will differ depending on hook and yarn used.
Notes:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect
Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
SC2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together.
Size: approx 3 inches in length and 1 inch in width
I use US Crochet stitch terminology
INSTRUCTIONS:
MONKEY FINGER PUPPET:
yarns brown and beige
CH 12 – SL ST into first CH and form a ring.
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
RND 2-12: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (12 SC)
RND 3: CH 1; *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around; (8 SC)
RND 4: SC2tog x 4.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Face:
Make a magic ring/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a circle
TIP – This part is made by working in continuous rounds, so you may want to use a stitch marker to keep record of your current rnd.
RND 1: work 6 SC into ring/circle;
RND 2: work 2 SC into each SC (12 SC);
RND 3: *work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around (18 SC);
RND 4: work 1 SC into next ST; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 DC into next 2 STS; work 1 HDC into next 2 STS; work 1 SC into next ST.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Join brown yarn into the SC ST before the START of RND with a SC.
RND 5: work 1 SC into next 2 STS; work [1 SC; 1 HDC] into next ST; work 2 DC into next ST; work 2 DC into next ST; work [1 HDC; 1 SC] into next ST; work 1 SC into next 3 STS.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Ears: (make 2)
Make a magic ring/ or CH 4 and SL ST to form a circle
TIP – This part is made by working in continuous rounds, so you may want to use a stitch marker to keep record of your current rnd.
RND 1: work 6 SC into ring/circle; change yarn to brown
RND 2: work 2 SC into each SC (12 SC);
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Sew face onto the body over the top half of the body (where the tip of the finger should be); before closing stuff with a tiny bit of fiberfill/toy-stuffing. Attach the ears to the side of the face.
Glue 12 mm googly eyes onto face.
TIP – if making for small (toddlers) rather embroider eyes or sew on small buttons securely.
GIRAFFE FINGER PUPPET:
yarns orange/yellow and brown
CH 12 – SL ST into first CH and form a ring.
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
RND 2-12: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (12 SC)
RND 3: CH 1; *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around; (8 SC)
RND 4: SC2tog x 4.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Mouth:
Make a magic ring;
RND 1: work 6 DC into ring/circle;
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing
Sew mouth onto face – use photo as a guide.
Use a small amount of black to make some nostrils. (Although I will admit mine looks a like a mouth!)
Horns:
Join brown yarn into a ST on top of the head;
CH 3; work 1 DC into same ST – if it seems to large make it a HDC; SL ST into next ST and repeat.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Ears:
Join orange/yellow yarn into the ST next to a horn on top of the head;
CH 5; SL ST into 3rd CH from hook; then SL ST into SAME SC as start of 5 CH.
Repeat for the other side.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With some brown yarn embroider a few spots randomly over the ‘body’.
Glue 10 mm googly eyes onto face.
TIP – if making for small (toddlers) rather embroider eyes or sew on small buttons securely
ZEBRA AND HIPPO FINGER PUPPET:
yarns – Zebra: black and white; Hippo – grey
CH 12 – SL ST into first CH and form a ring.
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
RND 2-12: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (12 SC)
RND 3: CH 1; *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around; (8 SC)
RND 4: SC2tog x 4.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Zebra and Hippo:
Mouth:
CH 5
RND 1: work 2 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into next 2 CH; work 4 SC into last CH; continue along the bottom of the CH; work 1 SC into next 2 CH; work 2 SC into last CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing
Sew mouth onto face – use photo as a guide.
Use a small amount of black to make some nostrils.
For Hippo Only: before sewing mouth onto face – with a small amount of white yarn; join with a SC into a bottom stitch (work into the back-loop) – SL ST into next 1 or 2 STS; then work another SC into the next ST.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Ears:
Join white/grey yarn into a ST on top of the head;
*CH 4; SL ST into 3rd CH from hook; work 1 HDC into same DC as 3 CH;* SL ST into next ST and repeat from * to *
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Glue 10 mm googly eyes onto face.

LION FINGER PUPPET:
yarns beige and golden brown (mane)
CH 12 – SL ST into first CH and form a ring.
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
RND 2-12: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (12 SC)
RND 3: CH 1; *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around; (8 SC)
RND 4: SC2tog x 4.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Face:

RND 2: work 2 SC into each SC (12 SC);
RND 3: *work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around (18 SC);

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Join golden brown yarn into any outside loop of round 4;
work [1 SC; 1 DC; 1 SC] into each loop all around.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Embroider a nose and mouth with some black yarn; then sew face onto body – only the ‘face’ part and not the mane!
Glue 10 mm googly eyes onto face.

ELEPHANT FINGER PUPPET:
Yarns grey
CH 12 – SL ST into first CH and form a ring.
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
RND 2-12: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (12 SC)
RND 3: CH 1; *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around; (8 SC)
RND 4: SC2tog x 4.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Trunk:
CH 11
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into next CH; work 1 HDC into next 6 CH; work 1 DC into last 2 CH.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Ears: (Make Two)
CH 4
ROW 1: Work 5 DC into 4th CH from hook; TURN
ROW 2: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST until end.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Sew ears and trunk into position onto the top part of the body.
TIP: when sewing the trunk – weave the tail thru the back and give some pull – this will shorten the trunk and give it a bit of shape.
Glue 10 mm googly eyes onto face.

TIGER FINGER PUPPET:
Yarns orange
CH 12 – SL ST into first CH and form a ring.
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
RND 2-12: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (12 SC)
RND 3: CH 1; *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around; (8 SC)
RND 4: SC2tog x 4.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Mouth/Nose:
Embroider with beige a nose/mouth onto the face.
Ears:
Join orange yarn into the ST at the side on top of the head;
CH 5; SL ST into 3rd CH from hook; then SL ST into SAME SC as start of 5 CH.
Repeat for the other side.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
With some black yarn embroider a few stripes randomly over the ‘body’.
Glue 10 mm googly eyes onto face.
