SKILL LEVEL:
Easy
Basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing.
MATERIALS:
Yarns:
Approx 20/30 grams of light weight worsted yarn- mixed (leftovers) – yarn color options are indicated in the pattern – the color I used will be highlighted
Note: colors are only a suggestion – any color can be used!
Hooks & Notions:
Hook 3,50 mm (or hook size you are comfortable to work with to make the page pieces)
Yarn needle
Stitch marker
Optional extras:
Ribbon
Hooks & Loops
Press Buttons / Fasteners
Glue On Eyes (10 mm) – or embroidery thread to create eyes.
Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
TR – treble crochet
SC2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together
Notes:
I use US Crochet stitch terminology.
Due to the nature of this pattern – the yarn and hook used is only a suggestion and any substitute may be used.
Size of finished product will vary depending on yarn and also size of hook used.
GAUGE:
Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect.
WHAT YOU WILL CROCHET:
David applique with slingshot and Goliath applique with sword and shield.
INSTRUCTIONS:
David and Goliath
“THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WERE ARE WAR WITH THE PHILISTINE PEOPLE.

EVERYONE WAS SCARED OF HIM. EXCEPT A SMALL SHEPHERD NAMED DAVID.
WITH GOD AT HIS SIDE DAVID DEFEATED GOLIATH WITH A SIMPLE SLINGSHOT AND
A SINGLE STONE.”
DAVID & GOLIATH:
With beige/white/cream/tan yarn – Make a magic circle
Body: (Make 2)
Head
RND 1: Work 6 SC into ring, use a stitch marker to mark your last stitch
RND 2: Work 2 SC into each SC of previous round (12 SC)
RND 3: *Work 2 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next, Repeat from * until end (18 SC)
RND 4: *Work 2 SC into next ST, work 1 SC into next 2 STS, Repeat from * until end (24 SC)
Body
ROW 5: Work 1 SC into next 4 STS, SL ST into next ST, TURN
ROW 6: CH 1, SKIP SL ST, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, SL ST into next ST, TURN
ROW 7: CH 1, SKIP SL ST, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, SL ST into SL ST of previous row, TURN
ROW 8: repeat row 7
Arms
ROW 9: CH 11, work 1 SC into 2nd ST from hook, work 1 SC into next 10 CH, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, CH 11, work 1 SC into 2nd ST from hook, work 1 SC into next 10 CH, SL ST into SL ST of row 7.
Fasten off and weave in ends
ROW 10: Rejoin yarn and work 1 SC into each ST across (24 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends
Body
ROW 11: Rejoin yarn into the 10th ST, work 1 SC into next 6 SC, TURN
ROW 12 – 17: CH 1, work 1 SC into each SC (6 SC), TURN
FOR GOLIATH ONLY:
ROW 18-22: CH 1, work 1 SC into each SC (6 SC), TURN
Leg
ROW 18: CH 1, work 1 SC into next 3 SC, TURN
ROW 19-22: CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST (3 SC), TURN
FOR GOLIATH ONLY:
ROW 23-26: CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST (3 SC), TURN
ROW 27: CH 1 work 1 SC into next ST, work 2 HDC into next ST, work 1 SC into last ST.
Fasten off and weave in ends
Leg
ROW 1: Rejoin yarn and work 1 SC into each ST across (3 SC)
ROW 2-5: CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST (3 SC), TURN
FOR GOLIATH ONLY:
ROW 6-9: CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST (3 SC), TURN
ROW 10: CH 1 work 1 SC into next ST, work 2 HDC into next ST, work 1 SC into last ST.
SL ST all around applique.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
The Hair: join yarn into any loop starting at the side of the head;
crochet [3 SC/or 4 SC] into each loop across. Fasten off and weave in ends.
I surface slip stitched a ‘ head band’ onto David (optional)
Embroider two eyes (optional) or glue on a pair of googly eyes. Embroider a mouth.
ACCESSORIES:
David’s Tunic:
With white or any color yarn – CH 9
ROW 1: work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; TURN
ROW 2-7: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST until end (8 SC); TURN
ROW 8: CH1; work 2 SC into first SC; work 1 SC into each ST until LAST ST; work 2 SC into last ST(10 SC); TURN
ROW 9-10: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST until end (10 SC); TURN
Fasten off and weave in ends.
I surface slip stitched a blue band across the waist and chest.
Goliath’s Tunic:
With grey/blue or any color yarn – CH 9
ROW 1: work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into each CH until end; TURN
ROW 2-8: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST until end (8 SC); TURN
ROW 9: *CH 7; work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into next 6 CH; SKIP 1 SC; SL ST into next SC. Repeat from *3 more times.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
I surface slip stitched a golden belt across the waist.
Goliath’s Shield:
With grey/blue or any color yarn – CH 4 – SL ST into first CH to form a ring; or make a magic ring;
RND 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 11 DC into ring; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
RND 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work 1 DC into same ST; work 2 DC into each ST all around (24 DC); SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
RND 3: CH 1; work 1 SC into each ST all around (24 SC);
Fasten off and weave in ends.
I surface slip stitched a golden ring around round 1; and sewed on a yellow star button (optional)
I sewed a ‘loop’ where Goliath’s hand can be inserted at the back.
Goliath’s Sword:
With grey/blue or any color yarn – CH 9
The Point:
Note: leave a long tail at the start and at the end; CH 8
Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 HDC into next CH; work 1 DC into next CH;
work 1 TR into next CH; work 1 DC into next CH; work 1 HDC into next CH; SL ST into last CH.
Fasten off.
The Hilt:
CH 7
Work 1 DC into the 4th CH from the hook (the first 3 CH counts as 1 DC);
SL ST into the next 3 CH, continue to work on the opposite side;
work 1 SL ST opposite the 3 SL ST worked, CH 3 (counts as 1 DC);
work 1 DC into the bottom CH of the first 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in tails.
With yarn needle and using the tails attach the point to the hilt;
Weaving tails through the back stitches of the hilt and the point neaten and cut of ends.
David’s Slingshot:
A chain with a long loop with a bead inserted – sewed onto David’s hand
