My Crochet Bible Stories Blanket/Playbook Part Eight

CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side

WHAT YOU WILL CROCHET:
A big fish (whale); 3 small fish appliques; 2 sea grass appliques and a Jonah finger puppet.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Jonah and the Whale

“JONAH WAS DISOBEDIENT AND DID NOT WANT TO OBEY GOD. HE FLED ON A BOAT AND
GOD SENT A FIERCE STORM. THE MEN TOSSED JONAH OVERBOARD AND A BIG FISH

SWALLOWED HIM. FOR 3 DAYS JONAH WAS IN THE BELLY OF THE FISH. HE PRAYED TO GOD
FOR HELP AND PRAISED HIM. THEN, GOD HAD THE BIG FISH THROW UP JONAH ONTO
THE SHORES OF NINEVEH AND HE OBEYED GOD AND HE PREACHED TO THE PEOPLE.”

SEA GRASS:

With olive/lime green yarn

CH 29

Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, work 1 HDC into
next 5 STS, work 1 DC into next 5 STS, work 1 TR into next 5 STS, SKIP 3 STS and SL ST into next ST

CH 11

Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC
into next 3 STS, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 1 TR into next ST,  SKIP 3 STS and SL ST into last ST

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing

CH 19

Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 3 STS, work 1 HDC into next 3 STS, work 1 DC into next 2 STS, work 1 TR into next ST, SKIP 3 STS and SL ST into next ST

CH 21

Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 4 STS, work 1 HDC into next 5 STS, work 1 DC into next 5 STS, work 1 TR into next 5 STS, SKIP 3 STS and SL ST into last ST

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing

WHALE – BIG FISH:

With grey blue green yarn

Body – Make 2

Make a magic ring

ROW 1: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 5 DC into ring (6 DC), TURN

ROW 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST; Work 2 DC into each ST until end (12 DC), TURN

ROW 3: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next ST;
*Work 2 DC into next ST, work 1 DC into next ST. Repeat from * until end (18 DC), TURN

ROW 4: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 2 STS;
*Work 2 DC into next ST; work 1 DC into next 2 STS. Repeat from * until end (24 DC), TURN

ROW 5: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 3 STS;
*Work 2 DC into next ST; work 1 DC into next 3 STS. Repeat from * until end (30 DC), TURN

ROW 6: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into same ST, work 1 DC into next 4 STS;
*Work 2 DC into next ST; work 1 DC into next 4 STS.
Repeat from * until end (36 DC), DO NOT TURN – continue along the bottom

ROW 1: Work 2 SC into each row – (24 SC), TURN

NOTE: Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing for first piece – continue below for second piece

ROW 2: CH1, work 1 SC into each ST until end (24 SC), TURN

ROW 3: CH1, work 1 SC into next 2 STS, work 1 HDC into next 3 STS, work 1 DC into each ST until last 5 STS, work 1 HDC into next 3 STS, work 1 SC into last 2 STS;

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing

Tail:

CH 6

ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into next 4 STS (5 SC), TURN

ROW 2-4: CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST (5 SC), TURN

ROW 5: CH 4 (counts as 1 TR), work 2 TR, 1 DC into same ST;
Work 1 DC, 1 HDC, and 1 SC into next ST; SL ST into next ST;
Work 1 SC, 1 HDC, and 1 DC into next ST;
Work 1 DC, 2 TR into last ST, CH 4, SL ST into same ST
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing

LITTLE FISH:

Make as many as required – I made 3

Make a magic ring

CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 11 DC into ring (12 DC);
SL ST into top of 3 CH;
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC, 1 HDC and 1 SC into same ST;
SL ST into next ST;
Work 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 DC into next ST, CH 3 and SL ST into same ST

JONAH FINGER PUPPET:

Yarns blue or any color you want to make his clothing and beige for face

CH 12 – SL ST into first CH and form a ring.

RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC worked.

RND 2-8: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (12 SC)

RND 9-12: when working the NEXT 4 rnds for the face; switch to beige and work 5 SC where you would like your face; then switch back to your main yarn

RND 13: CH 1; *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around; (8 SC)

RND 14: SC2tog x 4.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

For the ‘facial features’:
I embroidered eyes with french knots; then a mouth with a simple straight stitch;
a beard with a few more straight stitches and a ‘head band’.
