Abbreviations: US Terminology
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
BLP – back loop
RS – Right side
WS – Wrong side

WHAT YOU WILL CROCHET:
2 x Lion appliques; 1 x Lion finger puppet; 1 x Daniel finger puppet; “Den’ wall; Door; Grass
INSTRUCTIONS:
Daniel In The Lions Den
“DANIEL IS RAISED TO HIGH OFFICE BY HIS ROYAL MASTER DARIUS THE MEDE. BECAUSE OF JEALOUSY DARIUS WAS TRICKED INTO ISSUING A DECREE THAT FOR 30 DAYS NO PRAYERS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO ANY GOD OR MAN BUT DARIUS HIMSELF, ANY WHO BROKE THIS DECREE WERE TO BE THROWN INTO THE LION’S DEN. DANIEL CONTINUED HIS DAILY PRAYERS TO GOD; HE WAS ARRESTED AND THROWN TO THE LIONS. GOD SENT DOWN AN ANGEL TO SHUT THE MOUTHS OF THE LIONS AND DANIEL WAS SAFE AND UNHARMED.“
LION APPLIQUES:
With beige yarn
Head: (make 2)
Make a magic ring
RND 1: work 6 SC into ring – continue working in the round;
RND 2: work 2 SC into each SC (12 SC);
RND 3: *work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around (18 SC);
RND 4: *work 2 SC into next SC; work 1 SC into next 2 SC. Repeat from * all around (24 SC);
CH 3; work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into next CH; SKIP 1 SC; SL ST into next 5 SC;
CH 3; work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook; work 1 SC into next CH; SKIP 1 SC; SL ST into next SC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Around one Head only work the Mane;
with Orange; Darker Orange Brown; Golden Brown yarn;
Join yarn into any back loop of any SC on the last round of head;
*CH 3; SL ST into next loop. Repeat from all around.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Body:
CH 9 for the male lion; CH 8 for the female lion
Work 8 rows SC;
Fasten off and leave tails for sewing.
GRASS:
With olive green yarn
CH 31
SL ST into 2nd CH for hook; CH random loops all along CH.
exp: CH 5; SL ST into next 2 CH; CH 8; SL ST into next 2 CH; CH 6; SL ST into next 2 CH…continue like this until end.
Fasten off and leave tails for sewing.
DEN WALL:
With stone/grey yarn
CH 72
Work 1 DC into 4th CH from hook; work 1 DC into each CH until end.
Fasten off and leave tails for sewing.
DEN DOOR:
With dark brown yarn
Note: leave a long starting tail for sewing
CH 21
ROW 1: Work 1 SC into 2nd CH from hook, work 1 SC into each CH
until end (20 SC), TURN
ROW 2: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into each SC until end
(20 DC), TURN
ROW 3-13: CH 3 (counts as 1 DC), work 1 DC into each ST until end
(20 DC), TURN
ROW 14: CH 1, work 1 SC into each DC until end (20 SC)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
DANIEL FINGER PUPPET: (please do note Daniel and Jonah look the same – because they are the same; I was not pleased about how Daniel turned out and due to time restrictions Jonah agreed to stand in for him!
Yarns blue or any color you want to make his clothing and beige for face
CH 12 – SL ST into first CH and form a ring.
RND 1: CH 1; work 1 SC into each CH all around; SL ST into first SC worked.
RND 2-8: CH 1; work 1 SC into each SC all around; SL ST into first SC worked. (12 SC)
RND 9-12: when working the NEXT 4 rnds for the face; switch to beige and work 5 SC where you would like your face; then switch back to your main yarn
RND 13: CH 1; *SC2tog; work 1 SC into next SC. Repeat from * all around; (8 SC)
RND 14: SC2tog x 4.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
For the ‘facial features’:
I embroidered eyes with french knots; then a mouth with a simple straight stitch;
a beard with a few more straight stitches and a ‘head band’.
