Tension/Gauge is not necessary for this project to be perfect
I use US Crochet stitch terminology
Abbreviations:
CH – chain
SL ST – slip stitch
SC – single crochet (UK – DC)
HDC – half double crochet (UK – HTR)
DC – double crochet (UK – TR)
TR – treble crochet (UK – DTR)
Special Stitches:
5 DC POPCORN (PC):
- Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches into the same stitch.
- Drop the loop from your hook.
- Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group.
- Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.
- Work 1 CH to ‘close’ the popcorn

NOTE: If making so many popcorn’s seem intimidating or you do not want to make them I have given an alternative RND 18 & 19 below!
RND 18: join new yarn into ANY 2 CH corner space;
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into SAME space; SKIP 2 DC; CH 2;
(work PC into next DC; CH 1; SKIP 1 DC) 26 times;
work PC into next DC; SKIP 2 DC; CH 2.
*Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into NEXT corner space; SKIP 2 DC; CH 2;
(work PC into next DC; CH 1; SKIP 1 DC) 26 times;
work PC into next DC; SKIP 2 DC; CH 2.
Repeat from * 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
RND 19: join new yarn into ANY 2 CH corner space;
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into SAME space;
work 1 DC into next 2 STS;
work 1 TR into the 2ND DC OF RND 17;
work (1 BPDC around next PC; work 1 TR into next BPDC OF RND 17) 27 times;
work 1 DC into next 2 DC.
*Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next corner space;
work 1 DC into next 2 STS;
work 1 TR into the 2ND DC OF RND 17;
work (1 BPDC around next PC; work 1 TR into next BPDC OF RND 17) 27 times;
work 1 DC into next 2 DC.
Repeat from * 2 more times; SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. (27 TR; 27 BPDC plus 8 DC for EACH SIDE = 62 STS)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
HOW TO WORK THE BPDC AROUND THE PC:
- yarn over hook;
- insert hook from FRONT TO BACK – before the PC;
- then from BACK TO FRONT – your hook should be directly behind the PC;
- yarn over hook;
- pull thru; 3 loops on hook;
- complete normal DC (double crochet)

RND 20: FOR THIS ROUND WORK INTO BACK LOOPS ONLY;
join new yarn into ANY 2 CH corner space;
CH 3 (counts as 1 DC); work [1 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into SAME space;
work 1 DC into each ST until next corner.
*Work [2 DC; CH 2; 2 DC] into next corner space;
work 1 DC into each ST until next corner.
Repeat from 2 more times. SL ST into 3rd of 3 CH. (67 STS on each side)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Approx size 16 Inches (42 cm)
Note to make cushion cover you will need approx 3/4 rows of DC.
NOTE: THIS IS THE LAST PART OF THE SQUARE – IN THE NEXT PARTS THE SHAPE IS CHANGING.
